Adventure of Veyra Thornveil 1

The first place the ledger points to is a locked-down archive basement, all cinderblock walls, humming fluorescents, and stale paper dust. Shelves rise in narrow aisles, and the air smells like old toner and wet concrete. Veyra and Veeran stand under a blinking security light while the brass sigil plate warms in her hand.

A metal cart sits abandoned beside a filing cage. On it, a stack of transfer boxes leans open, and one folder hangs half-out, marked with the same dragon sigil as the plate.

The courier steps into the aisle from the shadows, hood still up, hands visible and empty. Veeran shifts to block the narrow corridor behind Veyra, tense and ready.

The folder on the cart slips farther open, revealing a list of names, dates, and a red-circled address line. At the far end of the basement, something clicks once behind a locked door.

The click comes again, followed by a heavy relay clunk. The locked door stays shut, but every fluorescent tube in the basement snaps dark at once.

Emergency strips glow red along the floor. A security shutter drops across the archive entrance, sealing the route back toward the stairs with a metallic crash.

The folder slides from the cart and spills across the concrete. The red-circled address is visible for one breath before a printer behind the filing cage starts feeding out fresh pages.

Beyond the shutter, footsteps enter the stairwell, measured and unhurried. The brass plate pulses hot against Veyra’s palm while the basement’s locks engage one after another.

Veyra snatches the fallen folder before the pages can scatter farther. The brass plate burns against her palm as she flips directly to the red-circled address.

The line reads: SUBLEVEL 3, SEALED ACCESS, NORTH SERVICE CORRIDOR. Beneath it, in smaller print, is an authorization code and a handwritten date from six years earlier.

Fresh pages continue sliding from the printer, each stamped with the dragon sigil and a timestamp only seconds old. Beyond the shutter, the measured footsteps reach the basement landing.

The courier grabs a maintenance handset and keys the archive channel. Their voice turns sharp and official, reporting movement near the east stairwell and a breach at the sealed door.

The footsteps beyond the shutter change direction. A burst of radio chatter follows, then recedes toward the opposite end of the basement. The filing cage stands clear.

The courier kills the handset, but its indicator remains red. They lead Veyra and Veeran through the filing cage toward the maintenance exit, while the folder stays secured against Veyra's jacket.

The courier reaches the maintenance door, but the handset’s red indicator blinks again without being touched. A faint burst of static leaks through the speaker.

Inside the filing cage, a compact archive camera pivots toward them. Its status light is dark, yet its lens tracks the courier’s movement between the shelves.

A printer behind the cage feeds out one final page. It bears the courier’s description, the maintenance exit’s location, and a timestamp less than a minute old.

Veyra slips the folder beneath her jacket and crosses to the maintenance door. Behind her, the courier raises the handset and broadcasts a sharp report toward the east corridor.

The camera pivots toward the courier’s voice. Veyra works the manual latch, finds the release beneath the warning plate, and pulls the maintenance exit open.

Cold service air pours through the doorway, carrying rain, concrete, and city noise. The courier steps backward into the false corridor while Veyra and Veeran reach the exit with the folder secured.
