Max lands hard on the fire escape, one hand slammed to the rail as the metal shudders under his weight. The rust is slick with fresh rain.

Behind him, the Private Investigator jams the window frame with both hands, forcing it down against the climb back in. His jaw is tight, eyes fixed on the street below.

A low engine hum drifts up from the alley, steady and patient. Somewhere below, someone is waiting.

Max Mason

Max Mason

The alley is the only way down.

The Private Investigator

The Private Investigator

Go. Don’t stop on the stairs. If they see you, keep moving.

He throws one last look at Max, then braces his shoulder against the window, trying to seal the gap before anything inside can force it open.

Rain ticks harder on the iron grating as Max stands at the top of the escape, the dark alley yawning below and the engine still idling out front.

I ask him what’s waiting below

What’s waiting below?

The Private Investigator does not look away from the street. His answer comes fast, low, and dry, like he has already measured the worst of it. A dark sedan, no plates you will want to memorize, and at least one man outside it.

The Private Investigator

The Private Investigator

They are not here for the rain. They are here for the folder, or for you.

He finally glances at Max, rain slicking his hair to his forehead. His shoulder is still wedged against the frame, and the window shudders under his weight.

The Private Investigator

The Private Investigator

If you go down the fire escape, stay to the wall. If the car door opens, do not freeze.

A sharp click snaps from the alley below, then a voice calls out, too faint to make out the words. The investigator’s mouth tightens as he shifts his grip, and a splintered piece of the window trim drops to the sill.

The Private Investigator

And Max, if I do not make it to the alley, remember what I told you about Delancey.

Max yanks the folder free on the first landing and keeps moving, rain needling his face as he drops to the next flight. The paper edges slap his wrist while his other hand keeps the rail.

Max Mason

Max Mason

Hudson Trust. Delancey office.

He cracks the folder open in motion. A name, a date, and a stamped address blur past in the stairwell light, then settle sharp enough to read before the next step.

Below, the alley voice cuts off. The sedan door opens with a hard, metallic thump.

The Private Investigator

The Private Investigator

Max, keep going. Do not stop for me.

He drives his shoulder harder into the window frame, buying one more second as the fire escape rattles under Max’s weight.

By the time Max reaches the bottom, the folder is still in his hand and the address is clear. Up above, the investigator is still at the window, and someone in the alley is climbing fast enough to make the metal groan.

Max Mason leaves Max's apartment behind and arrives at Delancey Street.

I head for Delancey Street

SUCCESS (Good Agility, rolled +1)

Forced onto the Fire Escape

Delancey Street hits like a wet fist, all neon bleed on the pavement and steam rising from a sewer grate. Max ducks beneath a peeling awning with the folder tucked close, rain ticking off the paper as taxis hiss past.

Across the street, the old office building stands dark above a shuttered storefront. One brass plaque still catches the light on the door: Hudson Trust.

Max Mason

Max Mason

Hudson Trust. This is it.

He scans the entrance and the curb. No receptionist glow, no visible crowd, just a dead lobby beyond smeared glass and a parked sedan idling farther down the block.

A side door on the building’s left stands cracked open, spilling a thin strip of hallway light onto the sidewalk.

Max Mason

Max Mason

The side door is already open.

From inside, a low voice carries out into the rain, clipped and urgent, then cuts off as if someone notices him.

Is someone waiting inside Hudson Trust?

YES (VeryLikely, rolled 25)

Forced onto the Fire Escape

Max leans forward, his eyes adjusting to the gloom of the hallway beyond the cracked door. A silhouette shifts against the interior wall, the unmistakable flicker of a cigarette lighter illuminating a man's face for a split second before he turns to face the entrance.

Max Mason

Max Mason

He is waiting for someone, and he is not alone.

I keep to the wall and listen

Max keeps flat to the brick, the folder tucked tight under one arm. Inside the hallway, two voices trade quick, low words, one clipped and impatient, the other breathy, watchful. A lighter snaps shut, and the cigarette glow disappears.

Unknown Man

Unknown Man

No, not yet. He is not in the hall.

Unknown Woman

Then where is the kid?

Shoes scrape farther in. One of them shifts toward the doorway, as if listening back toward the street.

Unknown Man

Unknown Man

On Delancey, if he followed the lead. Check the window first.

The words land cleanly. They are not guessing at random, they are tracking Max, and they think he has already come this way.

Max Mason

Max Mason

They know the address.

From inside, the side door trembles once, then settles. Whoever is in there stays back, waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Are they watching the street outside?

Max shifts his gaze toward the street, catching the reflection of a sedan idling near the corner. A man in the passenger seat holds a pair of binoculars, his focus locked firmly on the entrance of the Hudson Trust building.

They are not just inside. They have the whole block covered.

Max slips a torn flyer and some dry trash into the alley bin, then works a spark from his lighter under the paper edge. The first flame catches low and hungry.

Smoke crawls up the brick wall. A window above cracks open, and someone inside shouts down into the alley.

Unknown Woman

Unknown Woman

Hey, there's a fire below!

The sedan at the corner shifts, its headlights flashing once as the passenger turns toward the smoke instead of the entrance.

Unknown Man

Unknown Man

Stay on the door. I am checking the alley.

Max Mason

Max Mason

They looked away from the building.

From the side door, the waiting man inside steps deeper into shadow, distracted by the callouts and the growing glow outside.

I slip into the side door

SUCCESS (Good Stealth, rolled +0)

Max waits for the alley to look the other way, then slips through the side door as the smoke pulls attention outside. The latch gives under his hand, and the gap swallows him into the dark.

Inside, the stairwell smells like dust and old plaster. The shouting from the window thins above him while the door eases shut behind his back.

A phone buzzes somewhere deeper in the building. Not a ring, a vibration, brief and urgent.

Max Mason

Max Mason

The side door opens into a service hall.

Ahead, a narrow corridor bends past dim office glass. One door stands cracked open, light leaking across the carpet.

Unknown Woman

Unknown Woman

He came in. Move now.

Footsteps start up from below, fast and sure, while the building around Max feels suddenly occupied from both directions.

I head for the cracked office door

SUCCESS (Good Agility, rolled +0)

Forced onto the Fire Escape

Max moves down the service hall without breaking stride, keeping to the dim strip beside the wall. The cracked office door draws him in, the light beyond it widening over the carpet as he reaches it.

Inside the office, a desk lamp burns low over scattered papers and a dead monitor. The room is empty at first glance, but the glow catches a hand-drawn floor plan and a fresh set of fingerprints on the glass.

From below, the footsteps grow louder. Someone is coming up fast, and the office gives Max exactly one second to choose what he takes before they arrive.

On the desk, a cheap radio crackles once, then spits a clipped voice. 'He made the office.'

Unknown Woman

Unknown Woman

Check the door. Now.

The floor plan shows the building layout in rough ink, with Hudson Trust marked in the corner and one room circled hard enough to tear the paper.

The stairwell door at Max’s back bangs somewhere in the hall, closer now, while the light in the office trembles under a sudden draft.

listen to their conversations stealthy

SUCCESS (Good Stealth, rolled +2)

Max stays tucked in the office shadow as the voices in the hall sharpen. The stairwell bangs again, but now the real sound is the conversation riding over it.

Unknown Woman

Unknown Woman

He’s in there. Don’t let him reach the windows.

Unknown Man

Unknown Man

Too late for that. He’s got the folder.

Their footsteps slow at the cracked door, and the cheaper one, closer to the threshold, catches a breath like he is listening back.

Unknown Woman

Unknown Woman

Then take the file, not the kid. We need what he saw.

That lands hard. They are not guessing, they are trying to recover the trail Max already pulled loose.

Unknown Man

Unknown Man

Hudson Trust did the routing. The office on Delancey, the burner, all of it. He follows it, he finds us.

A hand grazes the doorframe outside, then withdraws. The search shifts from the hallway to the room, and the light over the desk trembles as if the whole floor is holding its breath.
