The Widow’s List
Mara Venn
Mara Venn

Rain needles the crooked village square. A middle-aged woman in a dark, travel-stained cloak stands beneath the bell tower, her iron-gray braid pinned with a bone clasp and one hand clenched around a folded list.

Mara Venn

Mara Venn

My name is Mara Venn. My son, Tomas, vanished three nights ago, and I will find whoever took him.

She unfolds the paper. Four names are written in cramped ink, each marked with a different symbol: a miller, a caravan guard, a hedge-witch, and a magistrate's clerk.

Mara Venn

Mara Venn

Oren Pell saw Tomas last. Jaska Thorn asked questions about him. Selka Reed knows old roads, and Iven Marr buried the report.

Mara steps closer, boots splashing through shallow rainwater. Her eyes are red from sleeplessness, but her voice holds steady as she offers the list toward Gdalf.

Mara Venn

Mara Venn

They all have reason to lie. I need someone the village already fears to ask questions they will not answer for me.

Mara Venn

Mara Venn

Will you help me find Tomas, Gdalf, or must I search these names alone?

Gdalf takes the folded list from Mara Venn. Rain darkens its edges, but the four names and their strange symbols remain legible in his hand.

Gdalf

Gdalf

I will find who is responsible for Tomas's disappearance.

Mara Venn

Mara Venn

Then hear me plainly, Gdalf. I will tell the square that you have taken this task, and I will name you before anyone who tries to bury Tomas's trail.

Her offer is also a burden. The village will now measure Gdalf's conduct against a grieving mother's trust, and failure will become public knowledge.

Mara Venn

Mara Venn

Start with Oren Pell. He saw Tomas last. Ask what he refuses to remember, then take the names to the others.

Gdalf

Gdalf

The ink has bled, but every marked name can still be read.

Mara releases the list completely and steps beneath the bell tower. Around her, shuttered windows crack open as word of Gdalf's new responsibility begins to spread.

Gdalf

Before I go, how old are you, Mara?

Mara Venn

Mara Venn

Thirty-eight. Old enough to know grief, and young enough to keep searching.

Mara folds her arms beneath the bell tower. Gdalf leaves her to the rain and crosses toward the village tavern, the damp list tucked safely inside his coat.

Warm lamplight spills from the tavern doorway. Behind the counter, a broad-shouldered middle-aged woman with copper-brown skin, a shaved temple, and a green wool vest, with a square face, a dark braid over her unshaved side, a cream linen shirt, and a brown ankle-length skirt polishes a clay cup while patrons murmur nearby.

Gdalf

Gdalf

I am looking for Oren Pell. Where can I find him?

Brenna Vale

Brenna Vale

Brenna Vale. That is my name, and Oren is at Pell Mill, east along the stream. He sleeps there when work keeps him late.

Several patrons turn at Oren's name, then quickly return to their cups. Brenna points through the rain-streaked window toward a low ridge and the dark line of the stream.

“Normally I would drink. But I have a grieving mother to attend to, so I go in the direction that the bar keep points me in, not worried about the rain”

Gdalf leaves the tavern behind and follows the stream east through relentless rain. Mud grips his boots, but the ridge and its dark mill remain clear ahead.

Gdalf

Gdalf

The rain is cold, but the list stays dry beneath my coat.

He reaches Pell Mill, where a broad-shouldered middle-aged man with weathered brown skin, a black beard, and a faded blue tunic stands beneath the wheelhouse awning. Flour dust whitens his sleeves.

The Miller

The Miller

You are Gdalf, then. Brenna said you were asking after me.

Oren sets aside a wooden paddle and studies Gdalf through the rain. The mill wheel turns steadily behind him, churning the stream into silver foam.

The Miller

The Miller

If this concerns Tomas, say what you came to ask. I have little use for village whispers, but I will not hide what I saw.

“And what was it you saw”

Gdalf

Gdalf

And what was it you saw?

The Miller

The Miller

Tomas came here near dusk, soaked through and breathing hard. He asked for the road beyond the eastern ridge, the one leading toward Selka Reed's country.

Oren's hand tightens around the wooden paddle. Rain rattles on the awning while the mill wheel groans steadily behind him.

The Miller

The Miller

He kept looking over his shoulder. I asked what troubled him, but he only said, “If they find me here, tell my mother I ran east.” Then he crossed the stream and vanished among the alder trees.

Gdalf

Gdalf

The eastern road leads toward Selka Reed and away from the village.

The Miller

The Miller

I saw no pursuer, Gdalf. But Tomas left this behind beneath the wheelhouse: a strip of red cloth caught on a nail.

“Will you give me the cloth?”

YES, BUT (Likely, rolled 58)

The Widow’s List
the miller
The Miller

Oren reaches beneath the wheelhouse and pinches the red strip free from the nail. The cloth resists, then tears with a sharp snap, leaving a ragged length in his hand.

The Miller

The Miller

Yes. Take it. But the nail held fast, and half the strip is still caught there.

Oren offers the torn piece across the rain-dark space. A faint metallic smell clings to it beneath the damp, and a narrow thread of black stitching runs along one edge.

The Miller

The Miller

That stitching was not on any mill cloth I own. I noticed it only after Tomas had gone.

The remaining fragment flaps beneath the nail, too firmly wedged for Oren to free without tools. The piece he gives Gdalf is small, but its black thread is intact.

The Miller

The Miller

If you show that in the village, say where you got it. I will not have this turned into another lie about me.

Oren closes his hand around the paddle again. The mill wheel groans, and the torn red cloth marks the eastern trail with a clue that cannot be recovered whole.

“Go take it to the villagers to let them know what I have found so far.”

Gdalf takes the torn red cloth from Oren and secures it beneath his coat. He leaves the mill, following the stream west through the cold rain toward the village tavern.

Warm lamplight receives him again. Brenna stands behind the counter, while the five tavern patrons, including n1, a young adult woman with a slim build, dark skin, tightly curled black hair, and a rust-red wool cloak turn as Gdalf enters with rain on his shoulders.

Gdalf

Gdalf

Oren saw Tomas flee east toward Selka Reed's country. He left this red cloth behind, marked with black stitching unlike anything from the mill.

Gdalf lays the cloth on the counter. The patrons lean closer without touching it, and the room's murmurs fade into attentive silence.

Brenna Vale

Brenna Vale

That is enough to make the story worth hearing. Oren has no reason to invent a trail leading away from himself.

I have seen that black stitching on caravan cloaks. Jaska Thorn's people use it when they mend red travel cloth.

Gdalf leaves the cloth on Brenna's counter and returns the next morning, when Jaska Thorn's caravan rolls into the square beneath a clearing sky. Jaska, a weathered middle-aged woman with a lean build, sun-browned skin, and a long black braid, wears a patched red cloak over travel leathers and carries a spear.

Gdalf

Gdalf

I found this at Pell Mill. Oren says Tomas fled east, and the black stitching matches caravan cloaks used by your people.

Jaska Thorn

Jaska Thorn

You came straight to me. Good. Show me the cloth, and tell me exactly what Oren said.

Gdalf gives her the red strip and recounts the miller's account. Jaska studies the black thread, then accepts that the evidence points toward caravan repairs, not proof that any caravan hand took Tomas.

Jaska Thorn

Jaska Thorn

I believe you found it where you say. I will ask my menders and show you our cloth, but you will tell the village this does not accuse my caravan.

Jaska gives him the answer he sought, but her condition binds his standing to her caravan's reputation. Several arriving traders hear it, and their guarded looks make the favor public.

“The more open you are the better, I believe the villagers will see ur cooperation in a positive way as well”

Gdalf

Gdalf

The more open you are, the better. If the villagers see your cooperation, they may judge your caravan fairly.

Jaska Thorn

Jaska Thorn

Then let them hear it from me. The caravan's mending chest and repair ledger are open to you, and I will name every red cloak repaired since Tomas vanished.

Jaska turns toward the caravan and lifts her voice. Traders pause among the wagons as she announces that Gdalf may inspect the cloth, records, and menders without concealment.

Jaska Thorn

Jaska Thorn

This openness costs us more than silence would. Every name I give can become a village accusation, so you will stand beside me when we present the findings.

The caravan's guarded faces ease, but the public pledge fixes Gdalf beside Jaska's reputation. She leads him to a covered wagon where a locked chest and wax-sealed ledger await.

Jaska Thorn

Jaska Thorn

There. Nothing hidden. Open the chest, read the ledger, and ask the menders what they remember. I will answer beside you.

Jaska breaks the seal and lifts the chest lid, revealing folded red cloth, black thread, needles, and labeled repair bundles. The caravan's involvement is now fully available for inspection.

“I go with her and inspect and ask. I admire her willingness to help”

SUCCESS (Great Reasoning, rolled +0)

The Widow’s List

Gdalf goes with Jaska beneath the covered wagon. He borrows the open ledger and examines each red-cloth entry beside the labeled bundles, comparing black thread, stitches, and dates.

Gdalf

Gdalf

Which red cloaks were repaired after Tomas vanished, and who handled them?

Two caravan menders step forward. An elderly elf woman with silver hair and a young adult man with a narrow face and ink-stained fingers indicate the matching bundles.

Caravan Menders

Caravan Menders

This bundle was repaired three nights ago. The black stitching is ours, but the cloak's owner brought it already torn.

Gdalf

Gdalf

Show me the entry and tell me where that cloak went afterward.

The ledger identifies the repair as belonging to a departing red-cloaked traveler, not a caravan hand. Gdalf confirms the thread matches the strip, but the rain-blurred date leaves the exact departure hour uncertain.

Jaska Thorn

Jaska Thorn

You have the record, the matching work, and the testimony. The hour is lost to the rain, but I will stand with you when you present it.

Inspection takes the better part of the afternoon, yet Jaska's openness gives the evidence a clear shape: Tomas encountered a red-cloaked outsider near the caravan's route, while the caravan's own records remain accounted for.

“I give jaska a kiss on the cheek as thanks for her help and present the evidence to the villagers”

Gdalf returns the ledger to Jaska, then leans in and kisses her cheek in thanks. She stiffens in surprise before her guarded expression softens, and she keeps hold of the evidence.

Jaska Thorn

Jaska Thorn

Unexpected, Gdalf. But accepted. Come, then. Let the village see what its suspicion nearly missed.

Jaska carries the open ledger and matching red-cloth bundles into the village square. Gdalf walks beside her as caravan traders and six village onlookers gather beneath the clearing sky.

Jaska Thorn

Jaska Thorn

This record proves the black stitching came from our mending chest, but the cloak belonged to a departing red-cloaked traveler. No caravan hand owned it.

Jaska displays the labeled bundle, the matching thread, and the rain-blurred ledger entry. Gdalf's evidence is now in the villagers' hands and plainly distinguishes caravan work from caravan guilt.

Village Onlookers

Village Onlookers

Then the trail leads to the traveler, not to Jaska's people.

Murmurs spread through the square, no longer accusing the caravan. Jaska closes the ledger and stands beside Gdalf, her public pledge strengthened by the evidence he has helped bring forward.

“After the evidence is presented I go to jaskas tent alone to find her”

Gdalf leaves the square alone and follows the caravan's wheel ruts beyond the last cottages. The camp settles into evening quiet, its canvas roofs pale beneath the clearing sky.

He recognizes the covered wagon where the ledger was examined, then notices a dark-green tent set apart near the stream. A spear rests beside its entrance, and Jaska's travel cloak hangs from the ridgepole.

The tent flap stands partly open. Within, lamplight falls across saddlebags, folded maps, and a small table cleared of the public evidence. Gdalf reaches the entrance without being turned aside.

Jaska Thorn

Jaska Thorn

You came alone. That makes this private, at least for the moment.

Jaska sits beside the table, her spear within reach but untouched. She watches Gdalf from beneath the tent's shadow, waiting without the guarded audience she carried into the square.

Jaska Thorn

Jaska Thorn

The village heard the truth today. Tell me why you sought me after the crowd was gone.

Rainwater ticks from the tent ropes into the dark soil. Beyond the canvas, the caravan remains quiet, leaving the space between them undisturbed.

Gdalf

I wanted to learn what you know about the traveler. But mostly, I wanted an excuse to see you again.

For a moment, only the lamp flame moves between them. Jaska's guarded posture loosens, and a small, surprised smile touches her weathered face.

Jaska Thorn

Jaska Thorn

That is a dangerous way to question a caravan guard, Gdalf. Still, I would rather hear it plainly than wonder whether you came seeking another accusation.

Jaska rises and crosses to a saddlebag, drawing out a narrow route map. She spreads it beside the lamp, one finger following the eastern road beyond the caravan's last camp.

Jaska Thorn

Jaska Thorn

The traveler wore red, but not our colors deliberately. A tall figure, hooded, traveling alone, took the old ridge path after the repair. They asked about Selka Reed's country.

Jaska Thorn

Jaska Thorn

I did not see the face. But the stranger carried a brass token stamped with a broken tower. I remember because they kept it hidden whenever anyone approached.

She folds the map to mark the ridge path, then leaves her hand resting near Gdalf's. Outside, the camp remains quiet while the private truth settles between them.
