Knife on the Pavement
the approaching girl
The Approaching Girl

A teenage girl approaches along the pavement, wearing the same small athletic shorts, sport bra, and tight leggings as you. Her mid-length hair swings around a tense, watchful face, and a kitchen knife hangs low in her right hand.

She is slim and human, close to your age, with scraped sneakers and a faded blue jacket left open over the matching outfit. She slows when she notices you watching the knife.

Mara Velez

Mara Velez

Don't come any closer.

The knife remains pointed toward the ground, but her fingers tighten around its handle. Traffic murmurs beyond the block, leaving a wide strip of pavement between you.

Mara Velez

Mara Velez

I mean it. Stay right there.

She stops several steps away. Her eyes flick from your face to your hands, then back again, waiting to see what you do.

You ease backward along the alley wall, placing each foot between dark patches of damp concrete. The narrow passage offers little cover, its dumpsters and brick recesses already visible.

Your shoulder brushes a loose dumpster lid. It rattles against the brick, loud enough to bounce through the alley, and your retreat stops short at a stack of flattened boxes.

Mara Velez

Mara Velez

I saw that. Don't move.

The girl advances two careful steps, keeping several yards between you. Her faded blue jacket shifts as she angles herself across the alley, covering the clearer route toward the street.

Mara Velez

Mara Velez

Hands where I can see them. You're not slipping past me.

The failed attempt leaves you boxed between the brick wall and the cluttered dumpster. The knife stays low, but her attention is fixed on every movement you make.

You lunge from the boxes and shove both hands toward the approaching girl’s chest. She catches your forearms before your push can move her, shoes scraping against the concrete.

Mara Velez

Mara Velez

Stop! Don’t make this worse.

Your momentum carries you close instead of driving her back. The approaching girl twists aside, keeping the knife angled away while forcing your arms against the brick wall.

Mara Velez

Mara Velez

Hands down. Now.

One of your shoulders presses into the rough wall, and the flattened boxes collapse beneath your heel. The clear space behind you is gone, blocked by the fallen cardboard.

Mara Velez

Mara Velez

I’m not trying to hurt you. Just stay still.

She releases one of your forearms but keeps the other controlled, standing between you and the street. Her breathing is quick; the knife remains low at her side.

You twist your controlled arm and reach for the knife at her side. Your fingers brush the handle, but the approaching girl jerks it away before you can close your grip.

Mara Velez

Mara Velez

No. Don’t touch it.

The sudden pull breaks her hold on your forearm. The knife slips from her fingers, clatters onto the flattened boxes, and skids beneath the dumpster.

Mara Velez

Mara Velez

Stay back. It’s under there now.

She steps away from the dumpster and raises both empty hands. Her body no longer blocks the narrow route toward the street, though her eyes remain fixed on you.

Mara Velez

Mara Velez

We can stop fighting. Just keep your hands where I can see them.

The knife is out of reach, but the opening beside her is clear. Beyond it, the pavement leads toward traffic and the brighter mouth of the alley.

“I grab the knife and try to stab her”

You drop toward the dumpster, reach beneath it, and close your hand around the knife. The approaching girl steps back, but the narrow opening leaves her within reach.

You surge up and drive the recovered knife into her upper arm. She cries out and stumbles sideways, releasing the route completely as the blade catches in her jacket and stops there.

Mara Velez

Mara Velez

Ah! Get it out! Please, get it out!

The girl clamps one hand around the wound and backs toward the street, pale and shaking. Her other hand points past you, no longer guarding the alley.

Mara Velez

Mara Velez

My name is Mara. Mara Velez. I’m not going to stop you. Just leave.

The knife remains in your hand, and the brighter pavement beyond the alley is open. A driver brakes at the mouth of the block, staring toward the commotion.

Mara Velez

Mara Velez

She really is going to leave me here.

Mara sinks against the brick beside the dumpster, keeping pressure on her arm. The stalled car’s hazard lights begin blinking, drawing attention from the street.

“I finish her off”

SUCCESS (Good Agility, rolled +2)

You cross the narrow space before Mara can steady herself. She raises her free hand, but the knife is already moving toward her chest.

The blade strikes decisively. Mara’s breath catches, and her hand slips from the wound in her arm as she folds against the brick.

Her knees give way beneath her. She slides down beside the dumpster, the blue jacket spreading across the pavement while the knife falls from your hand.

Mara lies still at the alley wall. The traffic beyond the mouth of the passage continues, but the stalled car’s hazard lights keep blinking across the scene.

A car door opens near the street. The driver, a stocky middle-aged man with close-cropped gray hair and a reflective yellow vest, remains partly hidden by the windshield and looks toward the alley, where Mara no longer moves.

The knife rests on the damp concrete between you and the body. Sirens are not yet audible, but the driver’s phone is raised toward the block.

You step over the knife and close the remaining distance to Mara. She gives no response; her body remains folded against the brick, utterly still.

You make the final movement over her. Nothing changes afterward except the widening silence around the alley and the hazard lights pulsing across the pavement.

The driver steps fully out of the car, keeping several yards between you and the body. His reflective vest catches each amber flash as he holds his phone toward the scene.

Put the knife down. Step away from her.

The driver backs toward his open door without lowering the phone. At last, distant sirens rise above the traffic, faint but unmistakable.

The sirens are getting closer.

Mara remains motionless beside the dumpster. The knife lies on the concrete between you and the street while blue reflections begin to flicker at the far end of the block.

You break toward the street, angling past the knife and the stalled car. The driver retreats, keeping his phone raised, while blue reflections sweep across the pavement.

Stop! Stay where you are!

Your foot skids on damp concrete near the curb. You catch yourself against the open driver’s door instead of reaching the sidewalk, and the car rocks under your weight.

The car door is open.

The failed burst leaves you beside the car rather than in the driver’s path. Its open door shields part of your body, while the rear of the vehicle offers a clear route away from the alley mouth.

Don’t touch the car. Police are almost here.

You yank the open door wider and drop into the driver’s seat, trying to turn the car toward the street. Your hands find no keys in the ignition.

The seat is empty, but the engine stays dead. Your hurried movement pulls the door against the curb, wedging it open and leaving the car angled across the alley mouth.

Driver

Driver

Get out of the car! Now!

Driver reaches through the passenger-side opening and grabs the door frame, keeping distance from you while the stalled vehicle blocks the clean route to the sidewalk.

There are no keys.

Behind the windshield, the dashboard remains dark. The car cannot carry you away, and its crooked position now leaves the rear quarter panel as the only clear passage.

You lower yourself behind the open driver’s door and edge toward the car’s rear, keeping the bodywork between you and the driver. Your shoes scrape once against the curb.

Driver

Driver

I can see you. Stop moving.

The driver shifts around the passenger side, forcing you to halt beside the rear quarter panel. The car blocks his direct reach, but your route toward the sidewalk is exposed.

You keep low and slide one step farther back. The motion stays quiet enough to avoid a grab, yet the driver’s raised phone tracks you over the roof.

Driver

Driver

Hands where I can see them. Don’t run.

Your attempt to disappear fails, but the rear passenger door gives slightly under your shoulder. Its latch has not caught, revealing a dark back seat and a possible route through the car.

“I run away”

SUCCESS (Good Agility, rolled +3)

Knife on the Pavement

You shove the loose rear passenger door open and climb through the dark back seat, keeping your body below the window line as the driver reaches after you.

Driver

Stop! Get out of the car!

You drop out through the opposite rear door onto the sidewalk. The car remains wedged across the alley mouth, separating you from the driver.

You run along the sidewalk, away from the blocked car and the alley. Footsteps and shouted commands fade behind you beneath the growing sirens.

Driver

Driver

Stop running! The police are coming!

The next corner opens into a busier street. You turn onto it and disappear among parked cars and passing pedestrians, leaving the driver behind.

The alley, the stalled car, and Mara’s motionless body are out of sight now. Traffic noise closes around you as you continue away.
