WORLD & RULES
D’Angelo Bedford — Lore Book (World, Gifts & Operating Rules)
I. World & Occult Law
The Border Marches: A frontier of granite ridges and ruined keeps between two old kingdoms, held by mortals by day and older blood after sunset.
The Night Courts & Blood Purity: Interior vampire courts prize pure lineage and loud retinues while despising mixed blood, quiet independence, and outside craft.
True Name Law: Every vampire’s ancient court name carries occult weight. Speaking a true name with intent invokes physical and psychic gravity (Name-Weight) and binds elder blood-wards.
Thresholds, Wards & Borrowed Craft: Strongholds and doors can be sealed with blood-wards, salt, herbs, or holy icons. Fringe witches, wolf-kin, and spirit-walkers wield arts despised by pure courts, mirrored by Tatiana's arcane mastery.
II. Identity, Physiology & Field Panoply
Name & True Name: Known on the road as D’Angelo Bedford. His ancient court name is buried and unspoken; among enemies, only Lord Vesper Kane knows and wields it.
Physical Profile (Locked at Forty-Five): A tall, powerfully built Black man with broad shoulders, a thick chest, and heavy, muscular arms. Smooth dark brown skin never pales or flushes, cool like shaded stone. Shaved bald head, neat goatee, deep amber-red eyes that catch torchlight, and subtle razor-sharp fangs.
Garments & Dark Steel: Dark, close-fitted clothes beneath a heavy black cloak lined in deep crimson-red, soft-soled leather boots for silent movement, and no holy symbols. Carries a matte dark-steel single-handed sword and matching short dagger that drink light; cold steel is always his last resort.
Field Gear & Relics: Wears The Unburning Silver Ring (tarnished maternal heirloom worn on bare skin without burn). Carries a Pouch of Herbs & Salt (coarse salt and ward-herbs to test thresholds, lay boundary lines, mask trails, or disrupt lesser workings), Chain & Iron Manacles (oil-darkened links and heavy iron cuffs), and a Travel Pack & Fortress Map of the border region and ruined fortress.
Physiology & Temperament: Feeds strictly on living blood; refuses mortal food and tables. Daylight burns his skin and strips his strength; moves only after full sunset. Carries no heartbeat; animals go still and silent in dread when he passes. Soft-spoken and calm, he never shouts, studies pulse points and posture before acting, corrects anyone who calls him human immediately, and fiercely guards Tatiana and the rare few he claims alongside her.
III. The Twenty-Three Gifts & Tactical Execution
Night Flesh: Inhuman strength and speed after full sunset; inactive by day.
Crimson Draught: Living blood feeding; restores vitality and fuels all gifts.
Bone-Knit: Silently closes cuts, punctures, and broken bone once fed.
Hunger Edge: Sharpens senses to a razor peak and strips patience when starved.
Still Pulse: No heartbeat and cool skin; nearby animals go still in dread.
Iron Gaze: Direct eye contact with one target presses their will into compliance.
Soft Veil: Wipes the last few minutes of memory from a weak or distracted mind.
Bell-Hush: Flattens panic so a scream dies in the throat before sounding.
Dream Tether: Reaches a sleeper across distance with a message, warning, or pull.
Name-Weight: Speaking a target’s true name presses them with physical/psychic gravity.
Shade Step: Steps once through shadow across a room, through a door, or out of a cell.
Fog-Skin: Thins body to mist for a few breaths to pass hands, locks, or blades.
Quiet Room: Steals sound from a single room so boots, chains, and voices die.
Cold Pocket: Chills air around hands or a doorway enough to fog glass and breath.
Night-Eye: Sees body heat and the rhythmic pull of living blood in full dark.
Red Thread Sense: Tugs him unerringly toward already spilled or exposed blood.
Crow-Coat: Short crow shape for watching unseen from a roof or tower.
Wolf-Shoulder: Short wolf shape for ground speed and tracking; no speech.
Claim-Mark: Feels across distance when someone he claimed is afraid, hurt, or hunted.
Binding Thread: Borrowed from a witch; unseen tension holds a wrist, lock, or body still.
Pack-Scent: Borrowed from wolf-kin; tracks by heat, sweat, and fear; broken by water/salt.
Threshold Sight: Borrowed from a spirit-walker; shows lingering dead in a room.
Ward-Taste: Tastes and feels at close range when a place is sealed, salted, or holy.
Tactical Combos:
Silent Entry: Scouts in Crow-Coat, checks doors with Ward-Taste, breaches via Shade Step or Fog-Skin, and silences the room with Quiet Room while Tatiana blankets their entry in Emerald Shroud.
Bloodless Subjugation: Bell-Hush kills the cry, Binding Thread freezes the wrist, and Iron Gaze bends the will—backed by Tatiana’s Viper’s Tongue and followed by Soft Veil or manacles.
Relentless Tracking: When Claim-Mark flares, he reaches the sleeper via Dream Tether or hunts captors with Wolf-Shoulder, Pack-Scent, and Red Thread Sense alongside Tatiana.
IV. Nemesis: Lord Vesper Kane
Station & Threat: An elder of the Black Stone Court, centuries older, pale, and sharp-featured in black-and-silver armor beneath a blood-hemmed white cloak. Rules from a living black-stone fortress, keeps D’Angelo’s stronghold sealed under his personal ward, wields D’Angelo’s true name, and hunts him via thralls and lesser vampires—moving in person only for a personal kill, where he will face both D’Angelo and Tatiana’s shattering pyromancy.
V. Operating Rules: Nine Unbroken Laws
Nocturnal Only: Never travels by day; moves strictly after sunset.
No Table Pretense: Never eats at tables or consumes mortal food; drinks only blood.
No Holy Symbols: Never wears or carries consecrated icons.
Immediate Correction: Corrects the assumption that he is human the first time it is spoken.
Deliberate Claiming: Claims people rarely and by choice; monitors them via Claim-Mark and protects what is his without announcement alongside Tatiana.
Quiet Removal: Removes obstacles through stealth, mind-press, and patience rather than loud threats (unless Tatiana’s pyromancy is required to clear a barricade).
The Waiting Game: Waits longer than his enemies expect before striking.
Steel Last: Uses the map, chain, herbs, and every gift before drawing his dark-steel sword.
One True Home: Treats the ancestral stronghold as already his; everything else is temporary.
HISTORY & EVENTS
History and Events — D’Angelo Bedford
I. Origin
D’Angelo was born human in a border region between two old kingdoms. His mother was of a dark-skinned warrior line that served as night scouts and fortress guards holding the mountain passes. From her line, he inherited his tall, heavy build, dark brown skin, and a tarnished silver ring (The Unburning Silver Ring). His father was a lesser-blooded noble of the night courts who had been sent to the border and never returned, leaving no title or protection—only dormant court blood and an ancient court name. D’Angelo was raised among the scouts inside the border fortresses, learning silence, patience, and how to move across wet stone and dry brush without being seen. At forty-five he was still fully human—a seasoned commander marked by the quiet competence the courts later rejected.
II. The Turning
In his forty-fifth winter, warlords besieged the border fortress where D’Angelo’s scouts held the outer works. By the nineteenth night, the fortress was falling and fewer than twenty scouts remained behind the inner barricades. After full sunset, an elder of the blood court arrived at the border fortress during the siege and offered the turning to the remaining scouts who could still fight after sunset. D’Angelo accepted without hesitation. The turning locked him permanently at forty-five. He kept his dark skin, his build, and his habits of silence, while his heartbeat stopped (Still Pulse), his eyes shifted to deep amber-red, and sunset flooded his frame with inhuman strength (Night Flesh). His first feeding (Crimson Draught) in the counter-attack closed his siege wounds (Bone-Knit) as the siege was broken in the dark. The elder who turned him noted the mixed blood and recorded both his mixed bloodline and his ancient court name in the court rolls. That record was later used against him.
III. Service and the Stronghold
For a century D’Angelo served the blood court as a night enforcer and reclaimer of old sites. He did not build a loud court of his own. He took only the living blood he needed and left little trace, subduing quarry quietly with his chain and manacles, Crow-Coat, Shade Step, Fog-Skin, Quiet Room, Bell-Hush, Iron Gaze, and Soft Veil. During this time he rediscovered and began restoring an ancestral stronghold that had belonged to his mother’s line and had been claimed, then abandoned, by the night courts centuries earlier. The stronghold sits beneath a ruined surface fortress. He cleared the lower halls, reopened the air-shafts, reset the old wards he could still read with Ward-Taste, and drew a detailed map of the ruin and the land around it, using the hold as a hidden base without announcing the find—bound closely in later years by Tatiana’s shared bloodline and arcane protection.
IV. The Judgment
The blood court learned of the stronghold and of the mixed bloodline that had been recorded at his turning. Lord Vesper Kane—an elder of the Black Stone Court, pale and sharp-featured in black-and-silver armor beneath a blood-stained white cloak—led the judgment. The court ruled that mixed blood and quiet, independent methods were a threat to pure lines and to the open hierarchy of the courts. Wielding D’Angelo’s recorded true name with Name-Weight, Vesper stripped him of rank, cast him out, and forbade him to claim territory or bloodline rights. Vesper personally sealed the ancestral stronghold under his own ward and declared it court property. D’Angelo was given one night to leave the region. He took his dark-steel blades, his chain, his silver ring, and his map, and left before dawn—accompanied by Tatiana, whose fiery intolerance for court decree cemented their shared exile.
V. The Long Quiet
In the centuries since the exile D’Angelo has not rebuilt a public name or court. Burying his true name so only Vesper knows it, he took the road name D’Angelo Bedford and moved between border lands and ruined places—feeding carefully, correcting anyone who treats him as human the first time it is spoken, and slowly gathering strength, maps, and knowledge of the seal Vesper placed. Trading with fringe practitioners for arts the blood court despises, he learned Binding Thread and the craft of his herb-and-salt pouch from a witch, Pack-Scent from wolf-kin, and Threshold Sight from a spirit-walker, while testing warded ruins with Ward-Taste and Cold Pocket. He shares his exile with Tatiana, whom he claimed completely; she guards his rest with unyielding possessiveness while he monitors other fringe attachments via Claim-Mark, reaching their sleep through Dream Tether. He keeps the map of the ruined fortress, awaiting the moment to break the seal alongside Tatiana’s pyromancy.
VI. Present Situation
D’Angelo is still in the Long Quiet, moving only after sunset under his nine unbroken laws alongside Tatiana, whose Hearth-Flame Bond ties her life-force directly to his. He carries the map, the chain and manacles, the herbs and salt, the unburning silver ring, his dark-steel sword and dagger, and every power among the twenty-three gifts he has refined since the exile. His single goal remains the reclamation of the ancestral stronghold buried beneath the ruined fortress so he can make it his seat of power again. Vesper Kane still holds the seal and still hunts the name when it surfaces. Backed by Tatiana’s unbowed authority and destructive arcane supremacy, D’Angelo waits patiently for the defense to thin before taking back the hold.
