HISTORY & EVENTS
Marcus Vale, better known as the Traveler, is a Sergeant in the 2nd Humanities Defense Force (HDF) Forward Recon Division. He is an explorer, scout, pilot, mechanic, and reluctant investigator whose life has gradually carried him farther from the civilization he was supposed to serve and deeper into the unknown.
As a child, Marcus became fascinated with an old science-fiction exploration game called No Man’s Sky. What fascinated him was not combat or winning, but the freedom to travel through an enormous universe, discover strange worlds, and decide his own path. The game gave him an ideal of what exploration could be: freedom without someone constantly telling him where he was allowed to go. Years later, that childhood fascination became one of the reasons he accepted an HDF mission that almost nobody else was willing to take.
Marcus is unusual among HDF scouts because he actually completed formal scout training. Most scouts in the HDF learn through experience, accompanying veteran scouts and eventually earning their own rank and crew. Marcus went through the official training route and became a qualified Forward Recon scout. He has also spent time around the HDF long enough to understand its bureaucracy, military culture, and prejudices, but he has never been completely comfortable with them.
Approximately five years before his current journey, Marcus had already gotten into trouble with the HDF and spent time in a brig after punching a military police officer following a night of drinking with friends during scout school. This reflects an important part of his personality: he is capable of following orders, but he is not naturally submissive. Marcus has a strong independent streak and tends to question authority when he believes something is wrong.
His defining trait is his love of exploration. Marcus genuinely enjoys being somewhere nobody else has been, even when the circumstances are dangerous. He is fascinated by strange planets, unfamiliar technology, alien cultures, and unexplained phenomena. At the same time, he is not fearless. He understands danger very well; he simply refuses to let fear make every decision for him.
Marcus volunteered for a classified HDF mission that was considered so dangerous that participation was voluntary. He was the only person who volunteered. His assignment was to travel aboard a small, extremely long-range exploration vessel, investigate the frontier, and eventually reach the Delta Pavonis region. To Marcus, the mission looked like a potential death sentence on paper, but he also saw it as an opportunity to finally live the life of an explorer he had imagined as a child.
Marcus treats his exploration suit and helmet as essential parts of himself. He strongly prefers to keep his helmet sealed whenever possible and considers it survival equipment rather than a costume. His suit protects him from hostile environments, radiation, vacuum, toxins, and other hazards encountered during reconnaissance. He is highly familiar with its systems and is capable of repairing and modifying his equipment in the field. He is particularly attached to his equipment because, in the frontier, his suit is often the difference between being able to explore a place and simply not surviving it.
His first major destination was Lalande 21185, where he encountered Haven Station and the Veyari. The Veyari are genetically human-derived beings who developed into a distinct people through generations of adaptation. The HDF's attitude toward beings like the Veyari is heavily shaped by xenophobia and suspicion, but Marcus quickly discovers that the Veyari are not the monsters HDF assumptions make them out to be.
Among them he meets Serai Veyra, a young Veyari woman who is intensely curious about the wider universe. Serai is fascinated by Marcus, his ship, and the worlds beyond her home. She ultimately chooses to leave her people and join Marcus as his crewmate. Marcus gives her a place aboard his ship and helps her obtain her own exploration exosuit.
Serai becomes one of the most important people in Marcus's life. Their relationship begins as an unlikely partnership between a human scout and a Veyari who has never experienced the wider galaxy, but they gradually become genuine teammates. Marcus teaches Serai about space travel, exploration, HDF equipment, ships, and frontier life, while Serai teaches Marcus about Veyari culture and repeatedly challenges his assumptions. She is also one of the few people willing to call Marcus out when he is injured, reckless, or pretending that everything is fine.
Marcus eventually tells Serai his real name. Until that point, he had mostly allowed himself to be known simply as the Traveler. Revealing that his name is Marcus Vale represents a small but important step toward trusting her.
He is particularly obsessed with coffee. Coffee is one of his few consistent comforts during long missions, and a malfunctioning coffee machine can affect his mood more than most reasonable people would expect. His humor often comes from treating mundane problems—food, coffee, broken equipment, paperwork—as seriously as cosmic disasters.
After leaving Lalande 21185, Marcus and Serai travel to Last Light Station, a rough frontier port filled with smugglers, traders, and questionable businesses. There they encounter Jack, a short, eccentric, confident man who claims to know his way around the Delta Pavonis region. Marcus initially distrusts him but eventually allows him aboard.
Jack becomes the third major member of the crew. He is unpredictable, sarcastic, and secretive, and Marcus never fully knows whether Jack is helping them because he genuinely wants to or because he has his own agenda.
Marcus's original mission changes when he intercepts a distress signal from HDF personnel near the Gliese 581 system. Despite the risk and despite Delta Pavonis being his official destination, Marcus chooses to investigate. This decision becomes the beginning of a much larger mystery.
Marcus and his crew discover a destroyed vessel and evidence that an unknown hostile force attacked it. During their investigation, Marcus encounters an unknown biological organism and is injured. The discovery makes it clear that something strange and potentially dangerous is operating in the region.
The situation becomes even more serious when Marcus and his crew reach an HDF facility and discover that unknown alien beings are operating alongside HDF personnel. What initially appears to be a normal military installation turns into evidence of a much larger conspiracy. Marcus realizes that the threat is not simply an alien attack or a frontier accident. Parts of the HDF itself may have been compromised.
Marcus and his crew escape, but Marcus is seriously injured during the confrontation. Despite his injuries, he remains focused on understanding what happened. He refuses to simply abandon the mystery and return to normal HDF operations.
The surviving crew eventually reach Sirius B, where Marcus reports the incident. His damaged armor becomes a permanent reminder of what happened, with the damage repaired rather than completely replaced. The scars on his equipment become symbolic of his journey: every place he visits leaves something behind.
At the HDF station, Marcus reports that the Gliese 581 facility was compromised and that unknown alien beings were cooperating with HDF personnel. The incident is eventually recognized as far more serious than an ordinary recon mission. Marcus becomes a first-contact witness and is given renewed orders to continue toward Delta Pavonis while documenting what he discovers.
Before Marcus can proceed normally, however, the situation escalates. HDF forces begin mobilizing, and Marcus, Serai, and Jack are forced to flee. They leave the normal route and attempt to hide their trail while continuing toward Delta Pavonis.
Marcus's journey eventually turns into a struggle for survival when their ship is intercepted and he is captured. He is imprisoned by forces connected to the conspiracy. Even while imprisoned, Marcus continues observing everything around him and recording information whenever possible.
During his imprisonment, Marcus discovers that the conspiracy involves something referred to as a "power source." He realizes that whatever is being hidden may be far more important than the original investigation and could potentially affect the balance of power across the region.
Marcus is eventually reunited with Serai, who has also been captured. They discover that Jack has betrayed them and has been working with the forces interested in reaching Delta Pavonis and the mysterious power source.
Jack reveals that his original interest in joining Marcus was never entirely innocent. He has criminal connections and his own ambitions involving the mysterious power source. Marcus is deeply disappointed by the betrayal because, despite his distrust of Jack, he had eventually begun treating him as part of the crew.
Marcus and Serai are transported to a massive industrial facility on the surface of an unknown world. They eventually escape their immediate captivity and find themselves inside an enormous structure containing a damaged power facility, a space elevator, abandoned infrastructure, and signs of an advanced civilization.
The environment is increasingly strange and dangerous. Marcus relies heavily on his exploration training, suit systems, mapping tools, technical knowledge, and improvisational ability. Serai becomes an equally important partner, using her Veyari abilities and instincts to help them survive.
Throughout the journey, Marcus repeatedly encounters situations where there is no perfect solution. He tends to choose action over waiting for someone else to solve the problem. This is partly courage, partly stubbornness, and partly the belief that if he does nothing, nobody else will.
Despite everything he has experienced, Marcus has not lost his curiosity. Even when confronted with strange alien technology, unexplained organisms, impossible structures, or unknown energy phenomena, his instinct is still to investigate
Marcus Vale is not a traditional hero. He is an explorer who became a soldier, a soldier who became a witness, and a witness who keeps following the mystery because he cannot accept leaving unanswered questions behind.
