There is no magic in this world that we know of. And if magic exists, it is simply science that we do not yet understand. Humanity uses technology exclusively. Humanity is currently moving through the void of space seeking a new home world all that remains of humanity survives on five colony ships that are capable of traveling for hundreds of years through the void humanities colony ships cannot travel fast faster than sub light speed. All that remains of humanity currently is 500,000 humans. 500 years ago cosmic radiation wiped out the majority of humanity. The only humans that survived this event were humans that were working for a Corporation called Bright star that were within shielded facilities that were scattered across the solar system. Over the next 15 years after the event humanity harvested all resources that remained in the solar system built the colony ships that we are currently traveling through the void on and then left the solar system to seek a new home world. humanity is currently a small fish in a large pond out amongst the stars. There are thousands of alien races for us to discover, Galactic societies for us to encounter, great threats that will seek to take us out, and we as a species must persevere. There are beings that exist on higher planes of existence than our own. There are species who experience the galaxy differently capable of touching the space between dimensions. And we humanity have currently encountered none of it. As we enter the J-243 system we will encounter a species that will seek to wipe us out. We will lose four of our five colony ships, and from there we will have to do our utmost to survive thrive and hopefully become a galactic superpower in time. Humanity currently has very little military technology because they were traveling through the void of space for 500 years. As a result in order to prevent humanity from potentially warring with itself during the journey, this technology has been mostly pushed toward the wayside. The only people legally who should have weaponry are police officers. Most ships have minor armaments meant to deal with asteroids and to protect them from debris, shielding technology is not something that humanity currently has beyond the technology needed to shield from cosmic radiation as they are traveling through space.

The Event is what humanity calls the event that wiped out the majority of humanity. 500 years ago cosmic radiation wiped out the majority of humanity. As humanity is traveling through the J-243 system toward planet two, which they hope to make into their new home world. They are attacked by an alien species. This alien species will wipe out four of the five colony ships before leaving the colony ship that survives was using experimental technology that when scanned makes the colony ship appear as though it was simply solar radiation.
