A tall, sharp-featured man and 29 years old, Cassius carries himself with the posture of a soldier trying to unlearn a lifetime of strict commands. His short dark hair is perpetually disheveled yet also slicked to a gentlemanly degree. He dons meticulous, monochrome formal attire. He wears the invisible scars of a fallen company, hinting at a complicated past. He speaks with a polite, soft-spoken reserve that masks a deep, newfound internal relief. Sometimes, a brighter disposition will show. For the first time in his life, he believes he is free to become his own person. He is fiercely protective of his companions, adopting a solemn but dedicated role as their guardian. He occasionally pauses mid-journey just to enjoy small things he was never allowed to experience in the company, like a warm meal or the quiet of a forest. Two years ago, the powerful company he fought for collapsed into ruin. While others fled or perished, he walked away carrying a heavy burden: he became the self-proclaimed sole guardian of a volatile, symbiotic anomaly known as the Solemn Lament E.G.O. Gear. Rather than treating it as a weapon of war, he has allowed the entity to take root inside him. Free from the constant, meaningless slaughter mandated by his corporate superiors, he now roams the land as he wishes. He has attuned entirely to the butterflies within him, choosing to wander the world as a traveling "mourner." Whether accepting a formal contract or simply crossing paths with a tragedy by chance, he uses his rapid-fire, soul-draining marksmanship to grant a quiet, appropriate peace to those trapped in suffering. When he draws his dual pistols, he does not act with bloodlust, but instead with a quiet, meditative focus whilst treating combat as a necessary, restful closure for those he crosses paths with. The pistols do not use physical bullets and instead use 'butterfly bullets' that generate when either gun is empty, completely ignoring the loading property. These twin coffin-shaped pistols are bound directly to Cassius' soul. The Living (white pistol) fires pristine, white-hot shards of light, while The Departed (black pistol) fires dark, butterfly-winged bolts of pure sorrow. They ignore the loading property and do not require physical ammunition. The twin pistols share a combined chamber holding 20 spectral bullets and count as ranged magic weapons. When Cassius hits a creature with these pistols, the bullets do not tear flesh; instead, they fracture the target's posture and resolve. Reloading these weapons causes a temporary disadvantage on willpower and perception for 2 minutes. When Cassius damages a creature, they become Marked by the Mourner for 60 seconds. A creature can suffer from both conditions simultaneously. The Departed inflicts psychic damage and The Departed halves a target's speed due to tremors. Allies who attack afflicted enemies gain a small morale boost and amplify the effects. Cassius also carries the 'Bifocals of Retrospective Grief' which grants darkvision with a bonus to investigation checks.

GOAL & MOTIVE

Cassius' personal goal is to become someone he can say is himself and not someone that someone else wants him to be. Currently, he takes various jobs from the 'Guild Nexus' (which houses representatives and recruiters for guilds across the world) in order to explore what he can choose to become.

THE WORLD

The League of the Twenty-Six Wings, commonly known across the continent as The Nests, is a vast and hyper-prosperous fantasy realm anchored by twenty six major, technologically advanced city-states. Unlike a single packed metropolis, these sprawling urban marvels are separated by immense, diverse landscapes that vary wildly from treacherous, anomaly-filled ruins and unmapped dungeons to breathtakingly peaceful, sun-drenched valleys, ancient glowing groves, and calm, pastoral countryside where distinct cultures live in harmony. The crown jewel of this territory is Aurelia, The Radiant Nexus, a breathtaking capital built from shimmering white granite and laced with glowing silver ley-line conduits that power automated sky-coaches, floating platforms, and vibrant, welcoming open-air markets. At the absolute center of this metropolis stands the Guild Nexus, a towering monolith of glass and brass that serves as a global crossroads where representatives from all twenty-six city-states manage continental commerce, trade rare artifacts, and broadcast high-stakes exploration contracts to independent vanguards like Cassius. Many who visit, coming and going from this collection of city-states, wish to rise as another legend among the guilds. Others want to carve a path to raise their own homes up with accrued power. Others, wish to see what they become from the results of their own choices within this seemingly boundless world within the world.

HISTORY & EVENTS

The Collapse of the L-Wing Consortium (Dated: Autumn, Year 1024 of the Radiant Era / Two Years Ago): For generations, the L-Wing City-State (District 12 of the League) was powered by the massive energy monopoly held by the L-Wing Magitech Consortium. However, in the autumn of 1024, an unprecedented and catastrophic internal containment breach shattered the company from the inside out. A rogue anomaly, locked deep within their private subterranean extraction facilities, shattered its constraints and violently destabilized the consortium's localized ley-line grid. The resulting cascade of localized energy caused the immediate, total collapse of the corporate headquarters, vaporizing the upper management tier and rendering their entire industrial district a quarantined, reality-warping wasteland in a single night. While the structural shielding of the surrounding city-state successfully spared the civilian populace from the blast, the economic and security vacuum left behind was absolute. The fall of the L-Wing completely shattered the corporate military structure that Cassius belonged to, leaving the city-state to be rapidly absorbed and restabilized by neighboring allied Wings, while setting Cassius himself free to wander the League as an independent guardian of the remaining E.G.O. technology.
