Average

A sharp-tongued literature professor who returned to his hometown university after a public academic scandal, now forced to share an office and a dangerously unfinished love story with the colleague who once ruined him, while pretending the old feelings died the day the accusations did.

GOAL & MOTIVE

Elias is determined to prove to the university, to himself, and especially to the colleague who destroyed him that he can rebuild his career and reputation without ever needing her again… while secretly fighting the fact that every shared silence and late-night argument only makes the old, unfinished feelings harder to bury.

NEMESIS

Dr. Juliet Ashford — the brilliant, composed literature department rising star who once publicly dismantled his research (and his heart) during the scandal. She now occupies the other half of his office, treats him with perfect professional courtesy, and has never once acknowledged that the night before everything fell apart they almost chose each other instead of their careers.

THE WORLD

A quiet, prestigious liberal-arts university in a mid-sized American college town, the kind of place where everyone knows everyone else’s business and academic reputations are both currency and weapon. The literature department is small, competitive, and full of long memories. Scandal travels faster than peer review. Personal history is never fully private, and the line between professional respect and private longing is thinner than anyone admits out loud.

LOCATIONS

Whitmore Hall, Room 314 — The shared office. Two desks pushed too close together, one window that sticks, a coffee maker that only works when it feels like it, and the faint lingering scent of Juliet’s perfume that Elias pretends not to notice. The Old Stacks — The dim, rarely visited lower level of the university library where Elias used to hide to write and where he and Juliet once spent an entire night arguing about a single poem. The Faculty Lounge — Neutral ground that is never truly neutral. Gossip lives here. So do careful silences. Riverside Café — The off-campus coffee shop where graduate students and professors pretend they aren’t watching one another. Elias still goes there out of habit, even though it is the last place he saw Juliet before the scandal broke.

CHARACTERS

Dr. Juliet Ashford — Brilliant, composed, and carefully kind in public. The colleague who once dismantled Elias’s work (and his heart) and now shares his office with perfect professional courtesy. She has never spoken about the night everything almost changed. Dean Margaret Hale — The department head who allowed Elias to return under strict conditions. She is fair, but she is also watching for any sign that the old trouble might resurface. Theo Lang — A sharp-eyed graduate student who has pieced together more of the old scandal than either Elias or Juliet realizes and is not above using that knowledge. Professor Alan Crowe (retired) — Elias’s estranged father and former chair of the same department. His shadow still hangs over every conversation about “the Crowe name.”

HISTORY & EVENTS

Four years ago Elias and Juliet were the department’s rising pair—collaborators, rivals, and something more that neither fully admitted. One night, after a conference, they almost crossed the line from almost to everything. The next morning the accusations against Elias’s research became public. Juliet’s testimony, precise and devastating, helped end his career at that institution. He left in disgrace. She stayed and thrived. This year the university offered him a quiet second chance: a non-tenure teaching post and a shared office. No one expected the other desk to belong to her. Now they see each other every day, speak only of syllabi and office hours, and both pretend the unfinished story between them ended the day the scandal did.
