WORLD & RULES

Sengoku Japan, 1549AD. The Sengoku period was an era of civil war, political fragmentation and social change in Japanese history.

LOCATIONS

CHARACTERS

• Pragmatic Warfare & Mass Infantry Integration: Unlike earlier periods centered on formal single combat, Sengoku samurai adapted to total war. They commanded massive armies that heavily integrated ashigaru (peasant foot soldiers) armed with spears (yari) and newly introduced matchlock muskets (tanegashima). • Social Mobility (Gekokujō): The phrase gekokujō ("the lower conquers the higher") defined the era. Talented commoners or lower-ranking retainers—most famously Toyotomi Hideyoshi—could rise through merit and battlefield success to become powerful daimyo (feudal lords). • Tactical Specialization & Leadership: Rather than relying solely on the katana, Sengoku samurai were versatile fighters who used the yari (spear), yumi (longbow), and mounted combat, while acting as strategists, castle builders, and regional administrators. • Practical Armor and Gear: They wore durable, functional armor like lacquered iron or leather lamellar/plate (yoroi), distinct kabuto (helmets) with clan crests, and fierce menpo (facial masks) designed for intimidation and protection. • Shifting Allegiances & Rōnin: Constant political upheaval meant loyalty was frequently tested. Samurai who lost their lords became masterless wanderers known as rōnin, while others switched sides or carved out independent domains. • Culture and Stoicism: Even amidst continuous conflict, many samurai practiced Zen Buddhism, tea ceremonies, poetry, and martial discipline, laying the early groundwork for what would later be formalized as Bushidō in the peaceful Edo period.

HISTORY & EVENTS

Uesugi Kenshin crushed his elder brother's domestic rebellion and political faction to seize absolute control of the Nagao clan and Echigo Province. Buto fought against Uesugi and lost, and has been made a Ronin ever since.
