The soot-choked air of Oakhaven was the last thing Akari smelled before his world dissolved into ash and iron. He had been only twelve when the horde came down from the Jagged Crags. They didn't come merely to raid; they swarmed like locusts, setting fire to the thatched roofs and filling the night with sharp, gut-wrenching shrieks. Akari remembers his mother’s hand—warm, steady, and unyielding—shoving him into the narrow root cellar beneath the floorboards. She locked the hatch from the outside, ignoring his muted screams, and stood beside his younger sister, Emi, holding nothing more than a rusted hearth poker against a tide of snarling monsters. Through the gaps in the wood, Akari watched the flickering shadows of the slaughter. He heard Emi's cries cut short, and the final, fierce defiance in his mother's voice before the cellar doors above him caught fire and the floor collapsed into ember and silence. When he finally dragged himself out from the cooling rubble days later, the village was gone. Only ash, silence, and the broken remnants of his family remained. Akari was found wandering the perimeter of the burnt valley by Master Corvus, a rogue spellblade living in self-imposed exile. Corvus saw in the boy an unexploded vessel of grief and raw potential. Where traditional mages spent decades poring over dusty tomes in quiet sanctuaries, Akari channeled his grief directly into the steel he carried. For ten grueling years, Corvus forged Akari into a weapon. He taught him to weave raw arcane energy not through chanted incantations, but along the edge of a blade. Akari learned to coat his longsword in crackling lightning to shatter armor, flash-step through spatial rifts to close gaps instantly, and manifest barrier shields off the flat of his blade to ward off incoming blows. Every strike became an outlet for the rage he had held since that dark night. Now, Akari wanders the borderlands as a sword mage for hire—stoic, guarded, and driven by a single purpose. On the surface, he accepts mercenary contracts protecting trade caravans and frontier settlements from monster raids. But beneath his quiet demeanor, Akari is tirelessly tracking the specific insignia carved into the goblin weapons left in his destroyed village: a cracked obsidian skull. He knows the attack on Oakhaven was no random raid; it was coordinated. And until the chieftain who led that horde and everyone who ordered it are brought to ruin, Akari's blade will never rest.
GOAL & MOTIVE
Hunting the Obsidian Skull: His immediate, overriding goal is to track down the group or chieftain behind the cracked obsidian skull mark left on the weapons during the slaughter of Oakhaven. He wants answers as to why his village was targeted, followed by complete retribution against those responsible. Preventing Another Oakhaven: Taking on contracts to protect vulnerable settlements and trade caravans isn't just a way to make a living—it's his way of ensuring no other family or village suffers the same fate he did. Mastery Over His Arcane Fire: He seeks to fully master the volatile blend of spatial and elemental magic Master Corvus taught him, turning his grief and lingering trauma into absolute control so he never fails to protect someone when it matters most.
NEMESIS
General Vorak, "The Obsidian Jaw" Who He Is: A ruthless, unusually intelligent hobgoblin warband commander who leads the Cracked Skull legion. Rather than a mindless raider, Vorak is a calculating strategist who acts as a mercenary for hire to powerful dark warlords and corrupted nobles.
