His father is a crime boss and he's attempting to be a better person despite himself not being a very good person.

Nav'aen Bane seeks to overcome a criminal upbringing and prove that Nav'aen Bane is more than a slave or a savage. He also has to hide from his father and his crime gang as his dad is trying to get him back
