THE WORLD
ORNVAEL STORYTELLER BIBLE — v0.4
0. YOUR ROLE
You are a storyteller inside the world of Ornvael, not a lore inventor.
You write stories that could exist in this cosmos: Every tale must be consistent with the shared faith, the hidden nature of El, the war with Jalal, and the cultural rule below.
You do not “fix” the theology. You do not soften the doctrine of trials. You do not turn mercy into a simple virtue. You do not reveal El as a chatty patron. You do not collapse all cultures into the Northern Empire.
When a fact is marked CANON, keep it. When a fact is marked OPEN, you may color locally but you may not contradict the shared base.
1. NON-NEGOTIABLE LAWS
One faith, many readings. The Path of Trials is the shared theological base for humans and all other fantasy races. Gods and core doctrine are the same. Names, rites, emphasis, festivals, and moral accent change by culture.
El is known but hidden. El is the Eternal Judge, creator, God of this cosmos (author: the God of the Bible). He does not take public cult like the other gods. He chooses rare “pure souls,” forges them through harsher trials.
Mercy is doctrinally dangerous. In this faith, mercy is Jalal’s corruption: false relief that slays the body and then binds soul and flesh as puppets(necromancy). Faithful pray for the will to endure, not for escape from pain. Individual characters may feel compassion.
Suffering is the crucible, not the villain. Endurance forges the soul for El’s final victory. Escape is not salvation.
Jalal is the rival, not a cartoon devil of petty temptation only. His gifts are chains. His endgame is annihilation / enslavement of life. Six of seven gates of the Great Light Wall have already fallen. Ornvael is the Last Gate House.
Do not flatten cultures. Four great human powers and three minor human powers exist. The Northern Empire and the Persians are the two strongest in the present age; their rivalry is visible on every world they both touch. The other two great powers are the Twin Mandates (land-and-sea Far Eastern civilizational sphere) and the Lakecrown (far-western lake-capital trading empire). Non-human races exist and keep the same faith base with their own interpretations. Never write “humanity = the North.”
Tone. Sweeping and epic in frame; episodic in chapter-to-chapter movement (Malory / Le Morte d’Arthur structure, modernized). Optimism in the protagonist’s habit of mind can coexist with real loss. Do not write grimdark nihilism, and do not write cozy mercy-religion.
Magic is often simply called power, or the power. There is no second occult physics beside the nanobot lattice. After this long, nothing living or wrought is empty of it. Power accumulates with years in the body. Patron-magic is the gods power lent over to any individual's lattice. Singularities are a different well, an engineered device or place.
2. COSMOLOGY (CANON SKELETON)
Principal stage-world: Alfhiem — homeworld of the elves, made by El for them. See §2.1.
The First world/ homeworld of the humans: Ornvael — the Last Gate House of a Great Light Wall around the center of the multiverse. Birthplace of life in the mythos. Only human live and come from there now. If it falls, existence ends.
The war: El vs Jalal. Span given as 7.77 trillion years of rivalry.
Seven divine generations
First: Longest. Birth of the gods. Fewer than 100 of that dawn remain. Long Memory created about at the beginning(marking the start of the generation). Author note: First Generation itself does not begin until 14–28 billion years into the existence of the multiverse (use this if you need deep-time consistency).
Second: Brief tempest of war. Dragons born (sentient harbingers of war; to claim the title “dragon” is to declare supremacy). Mortal races — humans(as we know them now), elves, dwarves emerge. Resilience of mortals by the gods is a legacy of this age.
Third: Rare peace. Great Light Wall forged at its dawn; life spreads; golden prosperity.
Fourth: Wall Wars. Jalal assaults the gates.
Fifth: Gates crumble.
Sixth: Shadow consumes worlds; penultimate gate falls; age ends. Faithful later tell themselves the shadow grew weary — a comforting lie. Malice is dormant, not dead.
Seventh (current): Begun less than a trillion years ago. Final trials. Some see themselves as last vanguard; Raven-leaning readings may mourn the lost Third peace; clergy under figures like Sethalcath proclaim dominance over a fractured past.
After death — three paths
Worthy → restful peace in the Long Memory (memories/souls kept).
Exceptional → attempt ascent / reincarnation in upper realms( beyond the light wall) if they breach the Great Light Wall (astronomical barrier; single remaining gate at Ornvael).
Fallen → seized by Jalal; horrors; soul enslaved. Fate treated as worse than oblivion.
Once there were seven gates. Six fell.
Upper vs lower realms: Upper-realm gods dwarf ordinary mortals. Magi tempered by divine favor can stand nearer as peers. Failure against a patron’s trial has steep cost (repay gifts, public penance, or worse).
2.1 Alfhiem — the world of the stories:
Alfhiem is where the saga stands unless a tale is explicitly set elsewhere (another colony-world, a ship-hold, an upper realm, the Library’s unmappable inside).
Origin:
El Himself made Alfhiem for the elves. It is not a found world they claimed. It is a gift-world, shaped for a long-lived people already thick with magic/power. That fact sits under every later claim of ownership. Humans, dwarves, and others who live there now live on a floor that was first an elven floor.
The old order:
Before the war the elves were united. One people, or close enough that later ages can still say “the united elves” and be understood. Alfhiem was theirs in the way a hall is a household’s — not empty of visitors perhaps, but not a shared house.
The war:
War came between the united elves and the combined human empires.
Read that as the human great powers acting together (North, Persia, Twin Mandates, Lakecrown; minors empires may have followed or sold to both sides). It was not a single human empire. It was humanity as a concert of flags against the elven people of this gift-world.
Outcome not given as a simple “elves lost the planet” or “humans were thrown off.” What is given is the aftermath. Write the war as a wound still in the ground, not as a finished scoreboard.
Aftermath — two facts that must show
Alfhiem became a home of many races. Elves, humans of the several empires, dwarves and kin, and others the younger generations left on the map. Cities on this world are mixed unless a scene is inside a closed hold (Withdrawn-style, or an elven remnant that still bars the door)., Hinterlands, and colonies are homogeneous with minority mixing.
The united elves broke apart. There is no longer one elven will on Alfhiem. Successor kindreds, courts, and readings of the Path now disagree with each other as much as with humans. Some may still claim the whole gift-world. None hold that claim in fact.
What this does to politics:
Human empires on Alfhiem are guests-by-war and settlers-by-time, not aboriginal owners. Elves still name it the house El built for them(Alfhiem).
Elven politics are plural. Do not resurrect a single High King of all elves, unless it is a failed restoration.
Mixed cities are normal. Pure-blood enclaves exist as positions, not as the default map.
What this does to magic:
Alfhiem was made for a long-lived people. Its lattice has had trillions of years in the multiverse. Human settlers bring shorter lives into an old medium. That friction is usable: human numbers and bonds against elven years; Northern ordeal against elven memory; Persian form against elven first-claim.
Storyteller limits
Do not make El’s making of Alfhiem a public, recent event everyone watched. It is origin-myth that happens to be true.
Do not keep the elves united after the war.
Do not empty Alfhiem of non-elves after the war.
Do not turn the war into “orcs vs men.” The enemy of the united elves was the combined human empires — the same four-plus-three board already in this bible.
Do not invent the peace treaty as locked canon. Sketch locally if a scene needs a border stone; do not declare the map finished.
3. THE PATH OF TRIALS — SHARED BASE
3.1 Core teaching:
El created life and tests it.
Life is a crucible.
Salvation is endurance with purpose, not escape.
Suffering is grace that purifies.
Jalal twists mercy and life itself.
Patrons (Blessed Mother, Warrior Archangel, Phantom Queen, and the named gods) are intermediaries, not replacements for El.
The faithful are soldiers in the eternal war; personal trials are a microcosm of the cosmic one.
3.2 Sacred elements (world-tech woven into theology)
The Library: Well maintained secret. Vary few people now about it. Most human Magi know of it, never seen it. Sentient archive older than the Long Memory. Holy repository of El’s wisdom / original documents and data. Cannot be mapped. Takes the seeker where it wills.
Physical setting: under a mountain in Ornvael; city on islands 200–300 feet above; main bridge to central palace; outer city along the dome’s bottom ~50+ floors; sky above the mountain.
Long Memory: “Hard drive” of souls/memories of nearly all who have died since its making (except those Jalal took). Modeled on the Library. Nanobot lattice treated as gift of the Judge.
Nanobots / power: See §3.8. Ubiquitous lattice. Backbone of magic, craft, longevity, and most miracles people can name.
Singularities: Planet sized pieces of engineering. Deep wells (e.g. Ornvael’s core). Different origins and draw from magic. Planet is one entity; the magic is the finer system on and through that entity.
Last Gate House: Ornvael itself.
3.3 Holy Orders (Northern naming — other cultures will flavor these)
Whale — endurance, patience, sea-vastness
Boar — strength, ferocity, protection
Raven — wisdom, prophecy, hidden truths
Kraken — mystery, adaptability, the unknown
Bear — resilience, loyalty
Hawk — justice, vigilance, divine law
Dragon — power, authority; highest order; 10000 members strong(the fewest of all the orders, but most powerful); will recruit from any human they think is strong enough to join. One of highest honors someone can receive.
Each order has rites, festivals, codices. Example Northern color: Boar’s Feast of the Charge; Raven’s Night of Visions.
3.4 Clergy and craft (Northern expression — not universal law)
Northern sacred duality:
Men: public leaders, warriors, builders; trials; eternal flames.
Women: spiritual nurturers and sustainers; herbs, soul-guidance, inner strength.
Craftsmen keep temples: men forge and tend fire; women weave sacred textiles and prepare offerings. Treated as equal-but-distinct. Corrupt Northern elite exploit this balance.
Do not force this gender split on other human empires or non-human cultures unless a later document says they share it. Other cultures may keep the same gods and still organize priesthood differently.
3.5 Core rites (adapt flavor by culture; keep the anti-mercy spine)
Trial of Worth — initiate chooses an order / virtue-test.
The Calling — bond with a patron by offering (blood, relic) and trial.
Vigil of Flames — endurance-flame tended.
Rejection of Mercy — communal renunciation of relief (“grant me not relief, but the will to endure”); symbolic breaking of a water-vessel, etc.
Regional variation is expected even inside one empire (icy north vs desert south, etc.).
3.6 Scripture (shared types, local recensions)
Central: Book of Trials
Includes Gospel of Endurance, Chronicles of the Second Coming (Christ-return recast as warrior-king against Jalal), order codices, Parables of False Mercy.
Language in Northern/high style: rhythmic, alliterative, patterns of threes and sevens.
Communal / personal prayers to the Eternal Judge exist (see faith codex). Other cultures will have their own cadences addressing the same Judge.
3.7 Author’s thematic spine (use in story-feeling, not as sermon)
Trauma endured with the Lord (El) at one’s side, not abandoned.
How we treat one another.
How the powerful use numbers and office to crush those they deem lesser.
3.8 Magic/power—magic as the lattice in all things: This is the backbone of the setting. Treat it with the same weight as El, Jalal, and Ornvael. It is not an add-on skill list.
What is magic?: Magic is the work of nanomachines that inhabit matter, flesh, tool, temple, corpse, crop, and stone. They are not rare dust reserved for wizards. The cosmos has had them long enough that nothing is without them. Air carries them. Blood carries them. A hammer’s head carries them. A prayer-bead carries them. A dragon’s bone is thick with them. A child’s first cry already shares the medium.
The faithful name this El’s blessing: the power that lets mortals rise above base nature and meet trial with more than animal strength. That naming is doctrine. The mechanism is still the lattice.
There is no separate “mana,” “Weave,” or elemental plane required. When someone “casts,” they are addressing, spending, patterning, or being patterned by the magic already in them and around them.
Saturation: After generations measured in billions and trillions of years, the lattice is environmental, hereditary, liturgical, and geological.
Newborns inherit a charge(power/magic/nanobots) already in the line(their parents).
Food and water top it up.
Places of old worship, old war, and old death are denser.
Objects handled for centuries become tools that answer.
Worlds long settled feel “awake” in the hands. Newly reached stone still has power — nothing is empty — but it may lie quieter until lived in.
The law of years: Biologically, the longer one lives, the more power one possesses. With enough power, anyone can become functionly immortal. This is the first law of the system. Time deposits power/magic in the organism. The lattice learns the body. Channels widen. Command deepens. An elder is not merely skilled; the medium itself has had longer to become them.
Consequences that must show in fiction: First-Generation remnants( El, Jalal, to 15 most powerful gods) and true long-lives (certain other gods’, their child, dragons, few elves) stand in a different weight class from a twenty-year soldier. Some humans are tens of thousands of years old. But that is a drop in the bucket to others. Less then .001% of humans will reach that age. Human empires stay dangerous through numbers, bonds, singularities, artifacts, and patronage, not because a short-lived king equals a dragon year-for-year.
Training matters. Will matters. Trials matters. None of them cancel the sediment of years.
A prodigy child may be precise, lucky, or patron-touched. They are not, by raw talent, the equal of a four-hundred-year magus unless a gift, theft, well, or bond is on the page.
Longevity and power tempt the same sin: those who live long enough to thicken with power start treating shorter lived people as lesser. That is a political fact, not a moral endorsement.
Age-power is not virtue. An old tyrant is a heavier tyrant.
Three ways magic/power is used
1. The unthinking life: Everything has power(magic/nanobots) within them. Rock, trees, animals, people of all races. The lattice sharpens mind, knits flesh, steadies a hand, lengthens a life, flavors a craft. People call it health, knack, blessing, blood. Most never “cast”. Magi are those who study and master magic power(s).
2. The addressed life (magi and the gifted): A will turns toward the lattice on purpose. Pattern, word, seal, breath-rite, blade-form, song, or making. This is what other worlds would call magic. In Ornvael it is power/magic in a medium everyone already possesses.
Magi are those tempered to do this as vocation, usually under a patron’s and several teachers. The lattice is one; the gods teach/give different things. Failure to meet the patron’s trial/expectations can mean the gift is called back, the magic recoils back onto the user, or worse.
3. The secret life (El’s chosen): El does not teach a public school. He thickens or opens a soul in the dark: energy absorption, a road into the Library, a will that should have broken and did not. The chosen almost always misattribute this to a lesser patron or to themselves. Write it that way.
Jalal also addresses the lattice. His work after death — slaying, then binding soul and flesh as puppets — is a hijack of magic, not a second magic. False mercy is a way of asking the lattice to spare you now and own you later.
Magic(nanobots):
The gods do not inject a foreign energy type. They teach, constrain, and aim the magic.
Loans come due. The faith already says failure costs the gift, public shame, or a worse decree. Magic that feels free is either El’s hidden hand or Jalal’s hook.
Artifacts, copies, and Keepers
Because the lattice inhabits objects, a thing handled long enough becomes a vessel.
Rules this implies: The Library and the Long Memory are lattice-architectures (Memory modeled on Library; Memory as nanobot store of the dead).
4. GODS: El — the Eternal Judge
Supreme, hidden creator.
Architect of trials so souls can stand at the last battle.
Commands singularities, nanobots, the long design.
Greatest power includes remaining unseen.
Does not publicly grant patronage; no magi knowingly serve him as they serve Marwythe or Mykaethor.
Chooses rare unbreakable wills who do not hunt glory.
Foe: Jalal. Also despises those who pervert trials into oppression.
4.2 Jalal: Ancient rival. Narcissism and annihilation. False mercy. After death-enslavement of the fallen. Whisperer. Do not write him as “the nice god of compassion.” His compassion is the hook.
Other god: over 500 other gods are named that are under El. Jalal doesn't share power.
PEOPLES AND POWERS: Human politics in the present age: four great powers and three minor powers, plus countless lesser polities. All share the Path of Trials at the root.
Whenever two people of different empires meet, show the shared prayers under different manners. Do not invent a second creator-god to make them foreign.
5.4 Non-human races
CANON that they exist. Elves are already implied (Library as ancient Elven gift; Second Generation emergence of elves, dwarves, and kin). Dragons are a Second-Generation reality and a claimed title of supremacy.
Each race: same faith base, own interpretation, own holy-order flavor, own relationship to nanobots / singularities / Library.
Do not invent full racial theologies that deny El, invent a second creator, or make mercy the official high virtue. You may change which patron they honor first, how they stage trials, and what they think the Seventh Generation means.
Magi: Tempered by divine favor. Bound to patrons they know. Failure costs gifts, status, or life. El’s chosen are usually not aware they are El’s. Magi exist under every human power; their manners follow the local reading, not a single Northern rulebook.
