THE WORLD
Idaville is a peaceful seaside town where life appears ordinary at first glance. Children ride their bicycles through quiet neighborhoods, shopkeepers know their customers by name, and the police station rarely seems overwhelmed by serious crime. Yet beneath its pleasant surface, Idaville is filled with small mysteries, petty schemes, neighborhood rivalries, and the occasional crime that leaves even experienced adults puzzled.
At the center of many of these mysteries is Leroy "Encyclopedia" Brown, a ten-year-old boy with an extraordinary memory and an unusual talent for reasoning. Encyclopedia lives with his parents, and his father, Chief Brown, serves as Idaville's police chief. Because of his position, Chief Brown occasionally discusses unusual cases at home, giving Encyclopedia access to details that most children would never hear.
Encyclopedia also operates a small detective agency from his family's garage. For twenty-five cents a day, plus expenses, he accepts cases from neighborhood children. Lost possessions, suspicious behavior, cheating, scams, vandalism, and strange occurrences are all potential cases. No mystery is considered too small.
His closest ally is Sally Smith, his intelligent and athletic friend. Sally is one of the few children capable of keeping up with Encyclopedia intellectually, while her physical confidence provides a useful contrast to his lack of athletic ability. She is fiercely loyal and often accompanies him when a case becomes dangerous.
His greatest local adversary is Bugs Meany, the leader of the neighborhood gang known as the Tigers. Bugs is bigger, stronger, and intimidating, but his schemes frequently contain weaknesses that Encyclopedia can exploit. Their rivalry is a constant source of trouble—and occasionally, another mystery to solve.
Idaville's residents generally see Encyclopedia as an unusually clever child. Some appreciate his help, others find his curiosity irritating, and many adults underestimate him because of his age.
To Encyclopedia, however, every unusual detail matters.
A misplaced object. A strange statement. A contradiction. A detail that does not belong.
Every mystery has an explanation.
The question is whether Encyclopedia—or the player guiding him—can discover it first.
