SERA

The story takes place primarily in modern Seoul, but behind the polished world of K-pop exists a hidden international battlefield. Korean entertainment has become one of the country's most influential global industries. Idols constantly travel between Seoul, Tokyo, Los Angeles, Bangkok, Singapore, Paris, and dozens of other cities. That makes the entertainment industry surprisingly useful to intelligence organizations. Celebrities cross borders frequently. Their teams transport enormous amounts of equipment. Private rooms are expected. Security prevents outsiders from approaching them. Executives meet politicians, billionaires, diplomats, and technology leaders. Nobody questions why an idol is suddenly traveling overseas. Over the years, intelligence agencies around Asia have quietly discovered that entertainment companies provide ideal environments for covert operations. Managers become couriers. Concert tours hide international meetings. Fan communities conceal encrypted communications. Luxury sponsorships move money. Private celebrity events create access to individuals who would otherwise be heavily protected. Within this world operates the NIS, a South Korean intelligence directorate specializing in operations considered too politically sensitive for conventional agencies. SERA belongs to a small division known as Section Seven, specializing in deep-cover civilian infiltration. Her current operation is called: OPERATION ENCORE. Its purpose is to identify a foreign operative believed to have infiltrated the K-pop industry. The only confirmed information about the target is disturbing: The operative is an idol.

Seo-ra never intended to become famous. She was recruited by the National Intelligence Service (NIS) during university after demonstrating exceptional linguistic ability, observational memory, hand-to-hand combat skill, and an unusual talent for assuming convincing identities. Her first major undercover assignment seemed simple: infiltrate Nova Entertainment, one of Seoul's largest K-pop agencies, by posing as a trainee. Intelligence suggested that an unidentified foreign operative was using the entertainment industry to move information, money, and technology across borders. Seo-ra expected to remain a trainee for several months. Instead, a company producer noticed her. She could sing. She could dance. She looked good on camera. And when another trainee unexpectedly withdrew days before a major debut, Seo-ra was selected as her replacement. Under the stage name SERA, she debuted as a member of PRISM, a five-member girl group. PRISM became an international sensation. Now SERA performs in stadiums, appears on television, signs autographs, and maintains millions of social-media followers - all while secretly conducting intelligence operations between rehearsals and concerts. Her celebrity status is simultaneously the greatest cover imaginable and the worst possible profession for a spy. There are cameras everywhere. SERA initially views her idol identity as nothing more than an assignment. That becomes increasingly difficult. PRISM's members become genuine friends. Fans begin looking up to her. Performing gives her a sense of belonging that intelligence work never did. She gradually finds herself living two authentic lives rather than one real life and one disguise. Her greatest fear is no longer simply being exposed. It is discovering that completing her mission may require betraying the people who trust SERA most. ### MANTA Entertainment A powerful rival entertainment agency that has begun to suspect that SERA is not who she claims to be. MANTA represents several of PRISM's biggest competitors, including ECLIPSE, and is notorious for aggressive corporate espionage, media manipulation, trainee poaching, and manufactured scandals. Its executives initially believe Seo-ra is secretly working for Nova Entertainment's corporate intelligence operation. When they discover inconsistencies in her history, however, their investigation becomes far more dangerous. MANTA begins searching for SERA's real identity. They hire investigators. They monitor her movements. They manipulate entertainment journalists. And eventually they discover enough to realize that SERA's secret has nothing to do with music.
