Humanity has spread across the **Orion Reach**, a sprawling network of star systems connected by ancient jump gates. Civilization is prosperous at its glittering core but increasingly lawless toward the frontier. Governments still exist, but real power belongs to megacorporations that own colonies, security forces, transportation networks, and even the air people breathe.
The largest cities are vertical neon labyrinths built inside orbital stations or beneath polluted planetary skies. Citizens enhance themselves with neural implants, artificial organs, cybernetic limbs, and illegal combat modifications. Personal AIs whisper through neural links, while advertisements are projected directly into augmented vision. Almost everything—from identity to memories—can be bought, stolen, or rewritten.
Outside corporate territory lies the **Free Reach**, where smugglers, bounty hunters, pirates, mercenaries, and independent settlers survive beyond the reach of conventional law. Contraband flows constantly between the civilized Core and these frontier systems: weapons, stolen technology, synthetic narcotics, rogue AIs, cloned organs, and sometimes people.
Dominating the criminal underworld is **the Black Helix Syndicate**, usually called simply **the Syndicate**. It operates across dozens of systems through smugglers, assassins, corrupt officials, corporate executives, and street gangs. Nobody knows who ultimately controls it.
Jade Blue survives between these worlds. Her small ship, **Bluebird**, carries cargo that customs officers should never see, while bounty contracts pay the fuel bills.

HISTORY & EVENTS
Two centuries ago, humanity discovered dormant **jump gates** beyond the edge of the Solar System. Within decades, explorers reached hundreds of new worlds and humanity entered an age of explosive interstellar expansion.
As colonies grew distant from Earth, governments struggled to control them. Megacorporations stepped in, financing terraforming, transportation, and entire planetary economies. Eventually several corporations became powerful enough to wage wars of their own.
The resulting **Corporate Wars** devastated dozens of systems. Battles destroyed stations, stranded colonies, and filled what is now the Ghost Belt with wreckage. Governments eventually negotiated peace, but corporations emerged with even greater control over interstellar civilization.
During the chaos, criminal networks evolved into organizations spanning entire star systems. The most successful was the **Black Helix Syndicate**, which quietly infiltrated corporate shipping routes, governments, security agencies, and frontier settlements.
Jade and Mira Blue grew up aboard freight ships operated by their parents. After their parents died under suspicious circumstances, the sisters survived together among pilots, smugglers, and station workers. Jade became a pilot and bounty hunter while Mira pursued neural engineering.
Years later, Mira discovered something hidden inside a restricted corporate network. She became frightened, secretive, and convinced someone was watching her.
Then she disappeared.
Eighteen months have passed. Jade has followed rumors across half a dozen systems without finding her. Recently, however, a captured Syndicate courier carried an encrypted data fragment containing two things Jade never expected to see together:
**Mira Blue's identification code—and the word ORPHEUS.**
That is where Jade's new adventure begins.
