The Ranger at the Sealed Temple

You arrive beneath the god-forged library, where star-metal doors seal a temple chamber. A wandering ranger braces them shut as armored guardians gather beyond the threshold.

Under his weather-stained cloak, a stolen relic pulses with buried light. Dust rises from the shelves, and ancient runes answer the relic's awakening.

Caelen Veyr

Caelen Veyr

Stay back. I took it so the prophecy cannot complete its promised return. If these doors open, something ancient comes home.

The guardians strike their spears against the sealed doors. Their chorus rolls through the library like distant thunder, while a thin crack of radiance spreads beneath the ranger's cloak.

Caelen Veyr

Caelen Veyr

They call me thief, and perhaps I am one. But I am the only barrier between this temple and the ruin written in its oldest verse.

Caelen Veyr

Caelen Veyr

You are the first soul to reach this standoff before blood or prophecy decides it. Tell me, stranger, which side will you stand upon?

Uncover the truth behind the stolen relic

“I ask the ranger what the relic truly is before the doors break. I also tell the ranger to hurry because I don't know how long the doors will hold.”

Rei Dannahas

What truly is that relic? Hurry. I do not know how long these doors will hold.

Caelen Veyr

Caelen Veyr

It is no mere key. It is a heartstone, carved from the first star that fell upon this world, and it remembers what sleeps below.

Before he can say more, the doors buckle inward. A seam of white fire splits the chamber, and the relic tears free of the ranger's cloak, hovering between you.

Caelen Veyr

Caelen Veyr

No! The temple has heard you ask. It will not wait for my answer now.

The hovering stone turns toward Rei, revealing a dark sigil within its radiance. Beneath the shelves, a narrow stairway unfolds from the floor, descending into blue-black depths.

Caelen Veyr

Caelen Veyr

There is your opening. The lower archive holds the first inscription, perhaps the truth I cannot give you. Take the stair, or help me hold this threshold.

“Is the heartstone responding specifically to me?”

YES (VeryLikely, rolled 36)

The Ranger at the Sealed Temple

The heartstone's radiance narrows around Rei, leaving the ranger and the buckling doors in pallid shadow. The dark sigil opens like an unblinking eye.

Caelen Veyr

Caelen Veyr

Yes. It is answering you specifically. Not the prophecy, not me. You.

A thread of star-born light stretches from the stone toward Rei without touching him. Ancient runes along the shelves flare in recognition, spelling a name older than the temple.

Caelen Veyr

Caelen Veyr

That mark is a choosing seal. The heartstone has found the bloodline, or the soul, that was hidden from its keepers.

Rei Dannahas

Rei Dannahas

The stone is responding to my presence.

Beyond the doors, the guardians fall silent. Their weapons lower as one, while the stairway yawns wider and releases a breath of cold, starless air.

Caelen Veyr

Caelen Veyr

Whatever sleeps below now knows you have come. If you descend, the archive may reveal why it chose you, and who tried to prevent that truth.

“I tell the ranger if they want my help they have to come with me and must explain everything once we are safe.”

If you want my help, come with me. Once we are safe, you will explain everything.

The ranger reaches toward the stair, but a band of pale fire snaps around his wrist and anchors him before the sealed doors. The threshold answers his stolen relic.

Caelen Veyr

Caelen Veyr

I cannot. The ward has bound me here since I took the heartstone. If I cross that stair, the doors open behind me.

The heartstone dims, then drifts toward the first stair. Its light leaves a narrow path through the darkness, while the binding crawls higher along the ranger's arm.

Caelen Veyr

Caelen Veyr

There is no safe place for both of us yet. Descend alone, and I will speak through the runes when you reach the archive's first seal.

Caelen Veyr

Caelen Veyr

If the archive recognizes him, perhaps the ward will release me. If it does not, he must learn the truth without my guidance.

The stair narrows as the stone passes beyond reach, closing the choice behind it. The ranger remains fixed at the threshold, compelled to guard the doors while the darkness waits below.

“Is it likely that this relic is related to my past/will help me find the people I'm looking for?”

NO (VeryLikely, rolled 92)

The heartstone glides down into the blue-black stairwell, but its radiance reveals no familiar face, mark, or memory from Rei's hidden past.

Caelen Veyr

Caelen Veyr

No. That relic is not a thread leading back to your abductors, nor a lantern for finding those you seek.

The runes along the walls answer with a low, hollow chime. The choosing seal remains fixed upon the stone, yet its purpose feels older and narrower than a guide.

Caelen Veyr

Caelen Veyr

It chose you because you can awaken what lies below. That is all the archive has promised, and promises are dangerous things here.

Above, the pale binding tightens around the ranger's arm, while the guardians remain motionless beyond the sealed doors. Nothing in the chamber points toward Rei's missing answers.

Caelen Veyr

Caelen Veyr

If the stone serves the sleeping power, then its choosing may reveal the temple's design, not the hand that remade him.

The stair descends into waiting darkness. The relic offers passage and recognition, but no map to the past and no promise that the truth below will be kind.

“Give me one good reason I should trust you. If not you're on your own, understand?”

Give me one good reason I should trust you. If not, you are on your own. Understand?

The ranger meets Rei's golden gaze without flinching. Above him, the pale binding bites deeper, and still he keeps one hand raised toward the descending heartstone.

Caelen Veyr

Caelen Veyr

Because I could have lied about the archive, claimed the stone chose me, and sent you into darkness blind. Instead, I told you it has no answer about your abductors.

Caelen Veyr

Caelen Veyr

I stole the heartstone to keep the sleeping power sealed. I stayed when the ward bound me, knowing the guardians would tear me apart if these doors opened. That is my reason.

The heartstone pauses above the next stair, and a hidden rune ignites beneath its light. It reveals the ranger's oath, etched into the threshold in his own bloodless shadow.

Caelen Veyr

Caelen Veyr

Descend, Rei Dannahas. I will not ask for faith. I will give you every truth the runes uncover, even if it condemns me.

The ranger's answer settles the bargain. The heartstone leads Rei into the blue-black depths, while the ranger remains above, bound to the doors but no longer hiding his purpose.

“If me and the ranger teamed up could we take on the guardians behind the door?”

YES (Unlikely, rolled 10)

The Ranger at the Sealed Temple

The oath-rune beneath the ranger's shadow flares gold. In its light, the sealed doors briefly reveal the guardians' formation, their strength measured against the two of you.

Caelen Veyr

Caelen Veyr

Together, yes. Not by meeting them in a straight clash. The ward weakens them while it binds me, and your chosen mark can turn that weakness against them.

Across the threshold, the guardians stir. Their spearheads dim from white fire to dull silver, and hairline fractures spread through the runes reinforcing the doors.

Caelen Veyr

Caelen Veyr

I can break their formation from here, but only once. When the seal opens, I will have moments before the binding takes everything from me.

Caelen Veyr

Caelen Veyr

If he trusts the stone's warning, we may survive the first charge. If he reaches the archive, the sleeping power may become our greater enemy.

The heartstone sinks another step, casting a path of star-born light through the darkness. Above, the ranger's oath remains bright, proving the guardians can be overcome, though not without cost.

Director's note

I look between the staircase with the rune and the ranger debating what I should do if anything at all. I then look around to see if there is any sort of melee weapon I can quickly grab

The Ranger at the Sealed Temple

Rei’s gaze moves between the rune-lit stair and the ranger held beneath the oath. The heartstone waits below, while the doors shudder under another measured guardian strike.

Among the fallen shelves, dust veils a rack of ceremonial arms. A short sword lies beneath cracked star-charts, its silver hilt untouched by the ward’s fading light.

Caelen Veyr

Caelen Veyr

Take the sword if you need steel. The temple will not object to a weapon, but it may judge the hand that carries it.

The ranger strains against the pale binding and points toward the weapon with two fingers. Behind him, one guardian raises its spear as the fractured doors groan.

Caelen Veyr

Caelen Veyr

Choose quickly. The stair offers knowledge, while the threshold offers a battle we can shape only once.

The short sword’s blade glimmers beneath the dust, revealing tiny runes along its fuller. They echo the choosing seal, though no mark answers from Rei’s skin.

Caelen Veyr

Caelen Veyr

If that blade recognizes him too, the archive may not be the only thing waiting below.

Director's note

I say under my breath as I run over and pick up the sword before running at the ranger telling them to move out of the way while I charge at the door they were holding shut with the guardians

“I better not regret this.”

The Ranger at the Sealed Temple

Rei’s gaze settles on the ceremonial sword. The rune-lit stair waits below, but the weapon offers an immediate answer to the guardians beyond the failing doors.

Rei Dannahas

Rei Dannahas

I better not regret this.

He crosses to the fallen shelves, clears the star-charts aside, and closes his hand around the silver hilt. The blade lifts cleanly from the dust.

Rei Dannahas

Rei Dannahas

Move out of the way.

Caelen Veyr

Caelen Veyr

I cannot move. Strike through the opening, and do not let the ward catch you.

Rei runs toward the ranger and the sealed threshold, sword held ready. The pale binding keeps the ranger fixed as the guardians raise their spears beyond the fractured doors.

He reaches the threshold at a charge. The silver blade flashes with the same faint runes as the choosing seal, and the doors shudder beneath the impact of his assault.

Director's note

I stab the sword into the opening before channeling my magic into the blade and release it in a burst of water erupting from the blade trying to hit all of the guardians

The Ranger at the Sealed Temple

The sword bites into the narrow opening. Rei channels his magic through the silver blade, and the runes flare as water gathers around its edge.

With a thunderous burst, a column of seawater erupts through the doors, spreading across the threshold in a shining arc.

Caelen Veyr

Caelen Veyr

Now! Hold the current steady, or the ward will turn it back upon us!

The wave crashes into the guardians and drives them across the temple floor. Their spearpoints spark against the flooding stone, while their formation breaks apart.

Pale fire races along the ranger's binding, then fractures beneath the pressure. The doors groan open another handspan, releasing cold air and distant choral echoes.

Caelen Veyr

Caelen Veyr

The ward is failing. Pull the blade free before the temple seals us in with them!

Beyond the opening, the scattered guardians rise amid streaming water, their armor dimmed but intact. Below, the heartstone pulses urgently from the rune-lit stair.

I pull the sword out and cut the ranger free then shield the ranger from any extra debris or water that makes it towards us

The Ranger at the Sealed Temple

Rei tears the silver blade from the opening and turns it against the pale binding. One clean stroke severs the fiery band around the ranger’s wrist.

The freed ranger stumbles, and Rei raises a wall of water and shadow between him and the threshold. Shattered stone and streaming spray break against the shield.

Caelen Veyr

Caelen Veyr

You cut the oath without opening the doors fully. I have not seen that done since the temple was young.

The guardians regroup beyond the flooded threshold, their silver armor shedding water. The nearest raises a spear, but its dim point trembles before the sword’s glowing runes.

Caelen Veyr

Caelen Veyr

The heartstone is calling the archive awake. We have only moments before those guardians remember their true strength.

Rei Dannahas

Rei Dannahas

The stair remains open, and the heartstone is still below.

Behind Rei, the rune-lit stair pulses with cold radiance. Ahead, the guardians advance through the water, while a deeper choral voice answers from beneath the temple.

Director's note

I get into a fighting stance with the sword raised ready to fight and strike at a moments notice

“They will just catch up if we run now, so either prove to me that you are useful in a fight or stay out of my way!”

Caelen Veyr

Caelen Veyr

Then watch closely. I was guarding that threshold before you ever reached it.

The ranger snatches a fallen spear from the flooded stones and plants its butt against the threshold. His free hand closes over the oath-rune beneath his shadow.

Gold fire surges through the spear and races across the water. The advancing guardians stagger as their armor locks, each movement dragged backward by the ward’s renewed command.

Caelen Veyr

Caelen Veyr

Strike now! The temple still knows my oath, and I am turning it against them.

The ranger twists the spear. Runes flare beneath the guardians’ feet, and bands of pale light rise from the flooded floor, pinning their formation without breaking it.

Caelen Veyr

That hold will last only while I stand. Take the stair, or use your blade while their strength is bound.

Director's note

I use my speed to dash at them while they are trapped and try to swiftly knock them all out as fast as possible

The Ranger at the Sealed Temple

Rei’s gaze flicks from the glowing stair to the scattered ceremonial arms. A second silver blade lies half-buried beside a broken star-chart, within a few strides.

Rei Dannahas

Rei Dannahas

Move out of the way.

He seizes the blade and charges. The ranger twists aside as Rei drives the sword into the narrow opening, its runes blazing beneath his grip.

Magic floods the blade. A roaring burst of seawater erupts through the threshold, sweeping across the bound guardians and hurling them into one another without breaking their armor.

Caelen Veyr

Caelen Veyr

Good. The ward has them held, but it will not hold forever!

Rei tears the sword free and cuts through the pale binding at the ranger’s wrist. He raises a wall of water and shadow as debris and returning spray hammer against it.

When the shield falls, Rei stands ready with the sword raised. He dashes through the flooded threshold, striking hilts and armored joints in swift succession as the guardians stagger beneath the ward.

“Now then before we go any further, you will tell me your name and you WILL tell me how you know my name and anything else you know about me got it?”

The guardians lie stunned across the flooded threshold. Rei raises one silver sword toward the ranger, while the second hangs ready at his side, water dripping from both blades.

Rei Dannahas

Before we go any further, tell me your name, how you know mine, and everything else you know about me. Got it?

Caelen Veyr

Caelen Veyr

My name is Caelen Veyr. I know yours because the heartstone spoke it through the choosing seal, not because I followed you or searched for you.

The sword pointed at Caelen answers his name with a faint chime. Its runes flare against Rei’s grip, burning a narrow red mark across his palm.

Caelen Veyr

Caelen Veyr

I know you are Triton-born, altered by shadow-work, and hunted by the ones who performed it. I know the temple recognizes that alteration, but not its makers.

Caelen Veyr

Caelen Veyr

I learned fragments from stolen temple records: your transformation was deliberate, your past was concealed, and someone feared what you might become. I do not know their names, their refuge, or why you survived.

Caelen Veyr

Caelen Veyr

That is everything I know, Rei Dannahas. No prophecy gives me the rest. The archive below may hold it, if it accepts you before the guardians recover.

Director's note

I try to remain calm but my eyes tell a different story entirely, they show hatred, anger, and a need for revenge

Director's note

My blade starts glowing and my magic begins to slowly flow around it like water in the open and endless ocean.

Caelen Veyr

Caelen Veyr

Seven living people, by the records I stole. Two were among the experimenters, three served their master, one carried messages, and I am the seventh.

The stunned guardians remain scattered behind him, armor ticking as water drains through the threshold. Caelen keeps both hands visible and does not reach for a weapon.

Caelen Veyr

The two experimenters know the procedures. The three servants know your altered nature and the place of your confinement. The messenger knows only your name and survival.

Caelen Veyr

Caelen Veyr

I do not know where any of them are now. My stolen records named no refuge, but they did mention a surviving ledger kept beneath a western fortress called Veyrhold.

The sword’s runes flare sharply, and the cut across Rei’s palm deepens before the light steadies. Caelen’s face tightens at the sight, but he holds his ground.

Director's note

I shout and throw a sword just between Caelen's legs and as the sword stabs into the ground a large eruption of water flies outward just behind Caelen narrowly missing him. I then take a second before calming myself and looking back at Caelen.

Director's note

I begin walking down the stairs reach the lower archive

Rei Dannahas

If you refuse, I will kill you. Come on. We have wasted enough time with these guardians.

Rei throws one sword between Caelen’s legs. It anchors in the stone, and a sudden eruption of water bursts behind the ranger, narrowly missing him before collapsing across the threshold.

Caelen Veyr

Caelen Veyr

Understood. I will come, and I will lead you toward Veyrhold’s surviving ledger. But once we reach the archive, we may find a safer trail first.

Caelen retrieves his spear and follows as Rei turns toward the stair. Behind them, the stunned guardians remain scattered in the flooding, unable to pursue.

Rei descends into the lower archive with one sword raised and the other at his side. The heartstone waits below, its cold radiance opening ancient doors as they approach.
