Adventure of Jade Blue 27

Elysium Arcology glows behind its transparent dome, a clean, corporate moon in a dirty sky. Below it, the Velvet Mile boils with neon, rain, and secrets. Marshal Dax Orin pushes through the crowd toward a private lift, jaw tight, one hand on a sealed debt chip he should have burned years ago.

Jade Blue steps out of the reflected glow, leather jacket damp, blaster low but ready. Dax spots her and freezes just long enough to look cornered.

A security kiosk across the corridor snaps awake, its lens tracking both of them. Dax shifts his body to block Jade from the lift, but his eyes keep cutting toward the sealed door, like he expects it to open on its own.

The lift panel flashes green. Somewhere beyond the glass, Elysium's bright lower levels pulse under false rain, while the Velvet Mile hums with incoming trouble. Dax looks at Jade, then at the door, waiting for her call.

Jade’s fingers flick across the kiosk bezel. The lens shutters once, then goes dead. The lift’s green light snaps to red, and the panel seals with a hard metallic thunk.

Dax jerks back, staring at the locked door, then at Jade’s hands.

A thin access strip coughs out of the kiosk slot, hot and blinking. Jade snatches the data wafer before it can retract, and the screen throws a brief ledger string across her goggles.

Dax’s jaw tightens as the corridor security feed scrolls to a static warning. He knows he is trapped here with her, and he knows she now has the chip.

The lift stays shut. The kiosk hums in a cold loop, waiting for the next command while rain ticks against the glass.
