Zev reaches the crowded tavern as benches splinter and tankards sail through smoky air. A young adult elf man with a silver prophecy-mark on his brow is pinned against the bar by three broad, red-faced drunks.

The Innkeeper

The Innkeeper

Help! Someone, help me get them off him!

Behind the bar, the innkeeper, with iron-gray hair tied in a bun and a flour-dusted cheek, a stout middle-aged woman in a green apron, waves a ladle helplessly. The marked elf struggles, his dark braid caught beneath one assailant’s arm.

Another corpse with a sword? Come on, then!

The nearest drunk, a broad middle-aged man with a ruddy, broken-nosed face and a stained brown vest spots Zev’s greatsword and lunges across the wreckage, boots skidding through spilled ale. His raised fists carry him straight into the skeleton’s reach.

Zev catches the nearest drunk by his stained vest and shoulder, then wrenches him away from the elf. Ale-slick boards make the maneuver jolt and loud.

The drunk tears free of the bar with a furious bellow, but Zev’s great strength drags him fully across the wreckage, leaving the marked elf unpinned.

The Nearest Drunk

The Nearest Drunk

You grave-born bastard! Put me down!

A splintered bench collapses beneath the drunk’s heel. Its jagged edge scrapes across Zev’s forearm as he forces the man clear, leaving a pale scratch between glowing markings.

The Marked Elf

The Marked Elf

Now! Keep him away from me!

The Innkeeper

The Innkeeper

That’s it! Hold him there, bone-knight!

Freed from the bar, the marked elf stumbles sideways and straightens, dark braid swinging loose. The other two drunks turn toward Zev, their fight suddenly redirected.

The Charging Drunk

Zev keeps the nearest drunk clutched by his vest, bracing against the slick floor while the other two circle through overturned benches.

The Nearest Drunk

The Nearest Drunk

Get your dead hands off me!

One broad man breaks from the wreckage and rushes in. Zev heaves the captive down, but the vest tears, twisting the drunk sideways instead of flat.

The charging drunk collides with Zev before they can secure him. Their combined weight carries all three into the fallen bench, scattering splinters and spilling ale.

The Innkeeper

The Innkeeper

Not the tables! Hold them away from the bar!

Zev catches the rusher’s arm, preventing a clean strike, but cannot pin him atop the first drunk. The two men scramble apart, no longer neatly stacked.

The Marked Elf

The Marked Elf

They will not stop while they think you are their only enemy!

Zev snatches a torn ledger page and charcoal stub from the wreckage. Between the circling men, they scratch a blunt message: STOP FIGHTING NOW.

The nearest drunk lunges for the page instead of retreating. His fingers close around it, crumpling the words as he yanks it from Zev’s grasp.

The Nearest Drunk

The Nearest Drunk

What’s this supposed to mean, corpse? You threatening us with writing now?

He thrusts the ruined note toward the other men. The brief distraction breaks their momentum, but their anger turns toward the marked elf again.

The Marked Elf

The Marked Elf

He is ordering you to stop, you fools! Even a dead man has more sense than this!

The charging drunk hesitates, eyes darting between the crumpled page and Zev’s glowing skull. The third man steps nearer the elf, fists raised once more.

The Innkeeper

The Innkeeper

Read the bone-knight’s warning and back away from my guest!

“i let out as much of a sigh as i can even though i have no lungs and. step between the drunks and the elf.”

A dry rasp escapes Zev’s skull, the closest thing their soundless body can make to a sigh. They step firmly between the raised fists and the marked elf.

The three drunks halt around the skeleton’s glowing markings. Behind Zev, the marked elf retreats until his back meets the bar, breathing hard but no longer pinned.

The Nearest Drunk

The Nearest Drunk

Move, corpse. This is none of your business.

The Marked Elf

The Marked Elf

No. Let him stand there. He has chosen the wiser side of this room.

The nearest drunk’s crumpled page slips from his hand into the ale. He glances at the other men, finding their courage diminished by Zev’s silent refusal to yield.

The Innkeeper

The Innkeeper

You heard the dead one’s warning. Lower your fists, or leave my tavern before the Watch arrives.

The Charging Drunk

The Charging Drunk

The elf started this. He knows what is coming, and he will not hide behind bones forever.

“i write a note that says, "why were you attacking this elf?" and show it to the drunks.”

FAILURE (Good Diplomacy, rolled -3)

Zev retrieves a dry scrap from beneath the bar and scratches, “Why were you attacking this elf?” The glowing skull turns, presenting the question to all three drunks.

Before the nearest drunk can read it, the charging drunk snatches the note. His ale-wet fingers smear the charcoal until only fragments remain: WHY... ATTACKING... ELF.

The Charging Drunk

The Charging Drunk

Because he cursed us! He walked in marked for doom and called the tavern ours to abandon.

The Marked Elf

The Marked Elf

I called no such thing. I warned them that the prophecy has found this place, and they chose to silence me.

The charging drunk crushes the unreadable scrap in his fist, but the nearest drunk catches his wrist. The accusation has shifted their quarrel toward the marked elf’s warning.

The Nearest Drunk

The Nearest Drunk

You said the prophecy would bring death here. You expect us to sit quietly while doom follows you through the door?

The Innkeeper

The Innkeeper

Then speak plainly, all of you. The bone-knight asked a question, and this room will hear the answer before anyone swings again.
