The Scanner Warning

The derelict tech store crouches beneath a veil of rust and dust, its sign hanging by one chain. Candy reaches the overflowing dumpsters, grateful for the empty street.

She sorts through cracked monitors, wire bundles, and corroded tool cases, setting anything salvageable beside her retrofit data pad.

Deep beneath the refuse, a damaged medical control unit flickers beside a cracked housing marked with the same scanner pattern as the MRI machine.

The control unit is drawing power from my data pad.

The pad's charge indicator drops despite the weak sunlight. Around the dumpster, dead displays blink awake, one after another, casting sickly reflections across the pavement.

A gutted vending machine hums without a battery. Inside the store, something answers with a precise electronic click, then falls silent.

Dust settles. The damaged unit continues its uneven pulse, and the familiar scanner markings seem less like damage than a warning concealed beneath the grime.

Stop the control unit from draining the data pad

Discover what system is responding to the scanner markings

“With her curiosity piqued she makes her way to the control unit and observes it, wondering what its general purpose is and what the connection to her pad is. She pauses, eyeing the machine suspiciously.”

SUCCESS (Superb Reasoning, rolled +3)

The Scanner Warning

Candy moves to the control unit and studies its seams, ports, and faded labels without touching the pulsing casing. The scanner pattern matches an MRI calibration interface, not a medical monitor.

Her data pad is not simply supplying power. Its operating system is answering an old diagnostic handshake, translating the unit's repeating pulse into readable maintenance signals.

Candy Snow

This is a control bridge. The pad is acting like a key, not a battery.

The unit's purpose resolves: it coordinated scanning equipment and monitored a buried service network beneath the store. The cracked housing is only one surviving terminal.

As Candy watches, the pad decodes a dormant maintenance map. A narrow route appears beneath the sales floor, leading to a service hatch behind the gutted vending machine.

The map also marks the terminal's local cache. Several diagnostic files remain intact, and the pad copies their index automatically before the unit's pulse settles.

The machine no longer looks like random wreckage. It is a functioning access point, and Candy now has both its purpose and a reliable way to follow the hidden route.

Discover what system is responding to the scanner markings

“She taps her pad to see if there is still a drain coming from the contents of the dumpster. With a couple of left taps she attempts to isolate the source of the drain. Is it the vending machine? The reserve access hatch that lead to the underground labyrinth perhaps? She looked over to the machine and vack to her pad.”

SUCCESS (Poor Repair, rolled +1)

The Scanner Warning

Candy taps the retrofit pad awake and watches its charge graph, then gives the interface two clipped commands to separate the active draw from the dumpster's scattered electronics.

Candy Snow

Candy Snow

The drain is still present, but it is not coming from the control unit.

She angles the pad toward the gutted vending machine. Its dormant display flickers in the same rhythm as the charge loss, while the maintenance map redraws beneath the sales floor.

A second tap isolates the signatures. The vending machine is drawing the current through an old service relay, not consuming it; the reserve access hatch remains electrically quiet.

The pad labels the relay as a diagnostic repeater and marks its connection to the buried network. The vending machine is only the visible conduit for the drain.

Candy looks from the machine back to the pad. The source is identified: power is being pulled through the vending machine's relay toward the underground service network, while the hatch itself waits unused.

“*she smiles warmly to herself. She always loved a mystery. Any brain game actually. She sauntered over to the vending machine and searched for a way to open the access hatch. Could she turn off the control panels access to her pad without losing access to the service network? She shrugged.* worth a try *she muttered.*”

FAILURE (Poor Repair, rolled -1)

The Scanner Warning

Candy smiles warmly to herself and saunters toward the gutted vending machine, its dead display flickering whenever the retrofit pad loses another sliver of charge.

She finds a corroded access seam beneath the coin return and pries it open with a flat scavenged strip, revealing the diagnostic repeater's cramped relay panel.

Candy Snow

Worth a try.

Candy traces the relay leads and isolates the pad's handshake line. The first contact lifts cleanly, but a spring-loaded bypass snaps shut inside the panel.

The vending machine display dies, and the pad stops feeding live commands to the control bridge. The underground service network remains powered, but its readable map collapses into static.

Before the connection disappears, the pad captures one final diagnostic frame: a manual service jack behind the machine, wired directly into the network beyond the relay.

The relay is isolated, but the network still has a hardline access point.
