Adventure of Pǔtōng Rén 1

Rain taps against the dark windows of the rented Polish house. Beyond the glass, the old man with the sledgehammer, an older bald man with a weathered face, deep-set eyes, plain dark clothes, and a massive hammer walks up the narrow street toward the front door.

Inside, Adrian clings close to the adults while Alaric watches through a gap in the curtain. The bear shifts heavily near the hallway, and the locked rooms seem to listen.

The old man reaches the porch without hurrying. He studies the door, then raises the enormous hammer toward the lock as the power flickers and dies.

Every face turns toward Pǔtōng Rén. Outside, the hammer hangs motionless above the lock, and no one can explain what the silent man wants.

Pǔtōng Rén opens the door and steps onto the rain-dark porch, the M1 Garand held safely in both hands, muzzle angled toward the ground. They wear a cheery expression as they face the old man.

Behind the glass, Alaric keeps the curtain parted while Adrian stays close to the bear. The old man lowers the hammer a few inches, studying the rifle, the smile, and the open doorway.

The answer gives Pǔtōng Rén the immediate truth of his demand, but the brief assessment leaves a concrete uncertainty: the neighbor's whereabouts and the borrowed thing remain unchecked. Rain ticks between them.
