The Fugitive

Kazumi reaches a high-mountain pass where the trail ends in a jagged collapse. Wind tears at the clouds below, carrying the scrape of falling stones into white emptiness.

Above the break, a young adult man clings to a twisted root with one hand. He is lean and dark-haired, dressed in a torn rust-red cloak over gray climbing leathers, with a pale scar crossing his cheek.

The Fugitive

The Fugitive

Please! I cannot cross this gap. They are coming!

His boots search uselessly for purchase against the broken ledge. Across the collapse, the trail continues upward, but the chasm leaves no safe route around it.

The Fugitive

The Fugitive

If you can reach me, throw a rope, a spell, anything! I will not survive another moment here.

Voices rise from below, muffled by the thin air and stone. Several figures are climbing toward the pass, their gear clinking closer with every breath.

The Fugitive

The Fugitive

Do not let them take me! I swear I have done nothing deserving this hunt.

“I stare at the man on the other side, noticing his attire and weathered look. He didn't look like a man suppose to be free.”

Kazumi studies him across the collapse instead of answering. His rust-red cloak is weather-stained and torn, while gray climbing leathers hang loose over a body worn thin by hunger and hard travel.

The weathering is genuine, but the loosened gear and careful movements suggest restraint, not freedom.

A dull iron band circles his left wrist beneath the glove, etched with the faded seal of a holding house. Its clasp is broken, leaving the chain absent but the mark unmistakable.

The Fugitive

The Fugitive

You see it, then. I escaped their custody, but I have not escaped what they made me carry.

His weathered face tightens as the voices below draw nearer. Yet his eyes flick toward a narrow shelf beneath Kazumi's side of the pass, hidden by windblown snow.

The Fugitive

The Fugitive

There is a lower shelf behind you. It reaches the far trail, if the old markers still hold. The wardens do not know it exists.

“"And you believe I will help you get there?" I asked, somewhat surprised by his audacity.”

And you believe I will help you get there?

The question crosses the gap softly, but the fugitive hears its doubt. His fingers tighten around the root as another stone breaks loose beneath his boot.

The Fugitive

The Fugitive

No. I believe you might, if I give you a reason stronger than my desperation.

His gaze drops to the iron band, then to the snow-hidden shelf behind Kazumi. The approaching wardens are close enough now for clipped commands to carry upward.

The Fugitive

The Fugitive

I carry a sealed memory taken from their holding house. It names the people who ordered the disappearances, not the prisoners who suffered them.

A tremor passes through the root. He cannot climb toward Kazumi without exposing himself, and the shelf behind her offers no room for both bodies at once.

The Fugitive

The Fugitive

You need not pull me across. Reach the shelf and break its oldest marker. The ward will show you a hidden foothold, and you can decide what the memory is worth.

“"What disappearences? Tell me and I will decide whether you are worth it."”

What disappearances? Tell me, and I will decide whether you are worth it.

The Fugitive

The Fugitive

Seven from Liora's ruins, then twelve from New Liora's poor quarters. Their records call them transfers. None reached the listed destinations.

The fugitive swallows against the wind. Below, a warden shouts a question, and the climbing voices pause, listening for an answer from the pass.

The Fugitive

The Fugitive

The orders bear Magistrate Oren Vask's seal, but the names beneath it belong to three guild officials and a captain of the holding house.

The Fugitive

The Fugitive

I copied the memory before they sealed it into me. The prisoners were being taken below Liora, where old war tunnels still breathe beneath the ruins.

Kazumi has the answer she demanded, but the cost arrives at once: the wardens hear the fugitive's report and begin climbing toward her side of the pass.

The Fugitive

The Fugitive

That is what I am worth, if truth matters more than an easy passage. I will not ask you to trust me, only to judge what you heard.

“I bite my lip, then toss the rope over. "Fine! But do it quickly!"”

Fine! But do it quickly!

Kazumi bites her lip and reaches for the rope, but no coil hangs from her gear or lies beneath the snow. Her hand closes on empty air.

The Fugitive

The Fugitive

The rope! You do not have one?

A warden's command echoes up the pass. The fugitive's root cracks, and he drops hard onto a narrow stone spur below, still clinging to its edge.

The Fugitive

The Fugitive

There! The old marker beside you is not only a ward. Break it, and the mountain may give us a foothold.

Snow shifts from a waist-high stone near Kazumi's boots, revealing a faded spiral cut into its face. Beneath it, a seam descends toward the hidden shelf.

The Fugitive

The Fugitive

You can reach the shelf without crossing the gap. If the ward still answers, it may bring me within arm's reach.

✓ Quest Accepted

Escape the approaching wardens

“I traverse down towards the ward.”

Kazumi descends along the seam, boots finding narrow stone grips beneath the snow. The hidden shelf emerges below, slanting toward the fugitive's broken spur.

Behind her, the spiral marker hums as her hand passes over it. Pale lines awaken through the stone, connecting the ward to the shelf.

The Fugitive

The Fugitive

Yes. That is it. Stand upon the shelf and touch the lower mark.

Kazumi reaches the shelf and presses her palm to the second spiral. The mountain answers with a deep pulse, and a bridge of dark stone unfolds across the gap.

The Fugitive

The Fugitive

The ward still remembers its purpose. Hold fast while I cross.

The fugitive hauls himself from the spur onto the formed bridge, favoring one leg. Above, wardens crest the pass, their silhouettes cutting through the snow.

The Fugitive

The Fugitive

I am across. The memory is sealed beneath my skin, but the seal can be opened safely once we leave their sight.

“"Then let us go, you better be telling the truth, I do not wish to incur the wrath of local law."”

Then let us go. You had better be telling the truth; I do not wish to incur the wrath of local law.

Kazumi crosses the dark stone bridge beside the fugitive as wardens reach the pass. The ancient span folds away behind them, leaving only wind and empty chasm.

The Fugitive

The Fugitive

Truth is all I have left. Keep moving, and their laws will not reach us before the mountain hides our trail.

He limps toward the far trail, one hand pressed over the sealed memory beneath his skin. Snow and jagged stone conceal their passage almost at once.

The wardens are behind us, and the trail ahead remains open.

The Fugitive

The Fugitive

There is shelter beyond the next rise, an abandoned watch hollow. Once we are inside, I can show you how the memory opens safely.

Together they leave the exposed pass and descend along the hidden trail. The fugitive's strained breathing fades beneath the storm as the wardens' voices vanish behind them.
