Moonlight cuts across a graveyard of leaning stones and wet grass. Steel rings somewhere ahead, fast and frantic, like a bell hammered to shatter.

Aiden Dryward steps between broken headstones and sees the fight in full: a rebel duelist backpedals, blade shaking, while a lord’s champion presses hard, every swing sharpened by dark magic.

Beyond them, a cruel lord stands on a cracked crypt slab, murmuring in a low, steady chant. The ground answers with a tremor, and pale shapes stir under the earth.

Near a chipped marble angel, a child crouches with both hands over their mouth, trying not to cry out.

Please do not see me.

If you have a sword, use it now!

Kneel, and the dead will keep your company.

The champion surges again, black air curling from the blade, and the rebel stumbles toward Aiden’s side of the graveyard.

✓ Quest Accepted

Protect the child

“Can I reach the child before the lord finishes his chant?”

NO (Likely, rolled 73)

The distance between Aiden and the marble angel is too great, and the ground beneath his boots turns to thick, clinging mud that slows his stride to a crawl. Before he can cover even half the span, the lord's chant reaches a final, resonant crescendo that vibrates through the very air.

“Is the child still unharmed?”

YES, BUT (Likely, rolled 63)

The child remains physically untouched by the dark energies, yet the suffocating pressure of the ritual leaves them trembling and unable to move.

“I shield the child from the magic”

SUCCESS (Good Willpower, rolled +0)

Aiden steps in front of the child and raises his sword arm wide, taking the pressure of the ritual on himself. The mist hits that living barrier and breaks around the pair, thinning at the child’s back.

The child’s shaking eases a fraction. They stay pinned in place, but the worst of the cold dread no longer claws at them.

Aiden’s boots sink into the mud, and his shoulder burns where the force slams into his guard.

So. The stray dog bares its teeth.

The Rebel Duelist

The Rebel Duelist

Good. He has to split his attention now.

Behind the lord, the dark haze twists toward the duelists, exposing the source of the surge. The champion shifts first, blade angling toward the rebel.

The child clutches at Aiden’s cloak from behind him, still trapped, while the next strike gathers in the champion’s stance.

Aiden holds the line, but the spell does not break. It slides along his guard, draining heat from his arm and peeling the mist wider around his feet. Behind him, the child remains hidden, yet the protection is no longer clean, only partial.

The pressure finds a seam. A black thread snakes past Aiden’s shoulder and tugs at the child’s cloak, not enough to drag them free, just enough to make the truth visible.

The Rebel Duelist

The Rebel Duelist

There, at his left hand. The chant is anchored to the lord’s ring.

For a heartbeat, the haze around the lord quivers, and Aiden can see it, a glint on the raised fingers, bright as cold bone beneath the dark.

The Cruel Lord

The Cruel Lord

Champion, kill the rebel. Leave the shield to me.

The command cuts the duel in two. The champion’s blade changes course, and the rebel is left with one step less room than before.

“Cut off the lords hand with the ring”

Aiden wrenches his longsword free of the mud and cuts for the ring hand. The lord jerks back, and the blade shears through his sleeve and across his palm instead.

The strike misses its intended severing blow, but blood darkens the lord’s fingers and the ring flashes loose on its setting. The spell stutters, pulling the haze inward around his wounded hand.

The Cruel Lord

The Cruel Lord

You insolent dog! Champion, break him before he reaches me again!

The champion abandons the rebel entirely and drives forward, black-edged sword raised. The rebel staggers clear, then spots the ring’s narrowing glow.

The Rebel Duelist

The wound disrupted it. Keep him moving, and the ring will fail before the next binding!

Behind Aiden, the child’s grip tightens on his cloak as the mist contracts. The lord’s injured hand now hangs exposed, but the champion’s advance blocks the direct path to it.

“Kick the champion into the Lord”

Aiden plants his wounded hand against the cold pressure and drives his boot into the champion’s center. The impact jolts his bruised shoulder, but his strength carries through.

The champion’s raised sword swings wide as he is hurled backward. He crashes into the cruel lord, knocking the lord from the crypt slab and tangling them both in the collapsing haze.

The Cruel Lord

The Cruel Lord

You witless brute! My ring!

The ring tears free as the lord strikes the ground. Its pale glow gutters, and the mist recoils from the graveyard stones with a sharp, whispering hiss.

The Rebel Duelist

Now! The binding is broken!

The champion rolls clear, disarmed and stunned. The cruel lord scrambles for the ring, while the child’s fingers release Aiden’s cloak as the crushing dread vanishes.

The Child

The Child

It stopped.

Mud sucks at Aiden’s boots, but the path to the exposed ring lies open. The rebel duelist rises nearby, blade ready, while moonlight returns to the silent graves.
