Debt in the Village Square
the human man
the human man

Jack walks through the village square beneath crooked timber roofs. Market voices falter as he approaches a broad-shouldered human man in a stained brown tunic, gripping an elf by the collar.

The elf is a slender young adult woman with pale green skin, silver hair braided with blue thread, and a torn gray cloak. One pointed ear is reddened; her hands strain against the man’s fist.

Jack closes the distance, his large frame casting over both of them. The human jerks the elf toward a rain barrel, then notices the newcomer and stops.

Keep walking, traveler. This is village business.

Seralyth

Seralyth

Please. He has no right to hold me here.

A hush spreads between the stalls. An elderly woman lowers her basket, while a pair of shepherd boys retreat behind a well, watching the human man’s grip and Jack’s stance.

the human man

You heard her. She owes me, and I’ll take what I’m owed. Unless you mean to make this your concern.

Jack

Why are you holding her?

the human man

the human man

She took a silver signet from my counting room. Says it was hers, but that ring bears my family mark.

The man loosens his fist beneath Jack's steady gaze. The elf slips free and steps behind the rain barrel, rubbing her reddened ear.

Seralyth

Seralyth

It belonged to my mother. He found it among our things after the old house burned, and now claims every scrap left behind.

the human man

I found it in the ash myself. But ask the shrine-keeper. She saw the seal before I ever touched it.

An elderly woman with a basket, her slight frame wrapped in a faded blue shawl over a plain gray dress, with wispy white hair and a warmly lined face, raises her hand from beside the well. At her nod, the villagers part, revealing the shrine's blue-painted door.

Mara

Mara

The seal is older than his family, traveler. Let the shrine's records settle whose bloodline it names.

Jack walks toward the blue-painted shrine door. The elderly woman leads him beneath its lintel, while the human man and elf woman remain outside among the watching villagers.

Mara

There. The shrine remembers what ash and thieves cannot. The signet is hers, and its seal answers to her blood.

Inside, blue candles burn without wicks. A stone basin reflects the elf woman’s ring, though she stands beyond the threshold, and faint runes awaken across the shrine wall.

Beside Jack, unseen by everyone else, a translucent menu unfolds in the air. Its letters shine silver, arranged like a list of hidden truths.

IDENTITY CONFIRMED: ANCIENT RULER OF THE ELVES. The words remain perfectly still, while a smaller line names the signet as proof of her sovereign bloodline.

Seralyth

What does the shrine show you, traveler? Your face has gone still.

Do not let old magic cloud the matter. A title from forgotten ages does not erase a debt owed today.

Hush. I would like to speak with the elf woman alone.

Elder, please allow us a private word.

The human man’s protest dies beneath the shrine’s awakened runes. Outside, the villagers fall silent as the elderly woman studies Jack, then turns toward the blue door.

Mara

Mara

Very well. The shrine will keep your words from listening ears. Come inside, child.

You cannot simply shut me out. That ring concerns my house.

And your voice has been heard. Wait beyond the threshold until she has spoken with him.

The elderly woman gestures sharply. The human man steps back, scowling, while the elf woman enters the shrine and stops a respectful distance from Jack.

Jack

I would like you to travel the world with me as my companion, and perhaps become more in time. I want to show you its better side.

The elf woman studies Jack beneath the blue candlelight. The shrine’s runes dim, leaving only the signet’s reflection trembling in the stone basin.

Seralyth

Seralyth

You offer a vast road to someone you met beside a rain barrel. That is kind, traveler, but kindness is not trust.

Seralyth

Seralyth

He knows what the shrine revealed, yet he does not know my name, my people, or what follows me.

Seralyth

Seralyth

I will not become your companion, nor promise what you call more. Not now. I have worn too many crowns to follow a stranger’s dream.

She removes the silver signet and holds it between them. Its ancient seal briefly shines, and a second rune opens on the shrine wall, shaped like a distant mountain gate.

Seralyth

Seralyth

If you truly want to show me a better world, begin with this: help me reach the gate marked here. Then I may decide whether walking beside you is wise.

Reach the mountain gate

The mountain-gate rune widens, spilling a pale path across the shrine wall. Beyond its outline, dark peaks rise beneath a sky crowded with unfamiliar stars.

Seralyth

Seralyth

That gate leads toward the northern passes, where those who remember my house may still be waiting. I must know whether they survived.

She closes her fingers around the signet but does not put it away. Her guarded posture eases by a fraction, though her gaze remains searching.

Seralyth

Seralyth

I will accept your help reaching it. I will not accept a vow, a crown, or the promise of affection before I know the man beside me.

The shrine answers her distinction. The mountain rune separates into three smaller marks: a road, a sealed door, and a black sun scratched across the stone.

Seralyth

Seralyth

The road is not safe, and the black sun is a warning I do not understand. If you still mean to walk with me, we begin by asking the shrine what it fears.

Jack

I would like you to travel the world with me as my companion, and perhaps become more in time. I want to show you its better side.

The elf woman holds his gaze in the blue candlelight. The signet’s reflection steadies, and the mountain-gate rune burns brighter across the shrine wall.

Seralyth

Seralyth

Then I will travel with you, Jack, as your companion on this road. I make no promise beyond that, but I accept the journey.

Seralyth

Seralyth

If there is a better side to this world, I will judge it by what we find at the northern gate, not by words spoken here.

At her acceptance, the road-mark opens into a narrow silver route. The sealed door remains dark, while the black sun sheds a single thread of shadow across the floor.

Seralyth

Seralyth

The shrine has heard us. Before we leave, we ask what fears the black sun, and whether that warning follows my bloodline or yours.

“Does what the black sun fear follow the elf's bloodline?”

YES, AND MORE (Likely, rolled 2)

The black sun-mark contracts, then turns toward the elf woman’s signet. Shadow crawls along the silver road and gathers into the shape of a crowned figure beneath distant mountains.

Seralyth

Seralyth

Then it follows my bloodline. But this is no warning meant only for me. Something beyond the gate knows my house, and fears what may return.

A hidden line appears beneath the mountain gate: THE LAST HEIR OPENS THE WAY. Beside it, a second mark reveals a small white flame, steady and untouched by shadow.

Seralyth

Seralyth

That flame was not there before. The shrine is offering us protection, or a guide. Either way, it gives us a chance the warning did not promise.

The sealed door groans without opening. From its stone face comes a muffled chime, and three pale footprints form across the floor toward the shrine’s rear passage.

Seralyth

Seralyth

Someone has walked this path recently. If they served my house, they may know why the black sun is afraid.

Seralyth

Seralyth

We should follow the footprints before the shrine closes them. What waits beyond may answer more than the mountain gate alone.

“Lets follow the footprints and when we find what we're looking for we will exit the shrine and speak to the elder in private”

SUCCESS (Good Perception, rolled -1)

Jack follows the pale footprints through the rear passage, with the elf close behind. The white flame drifts ahead, lighting carvings of crowned figures beneath mountains.

The prints end at a shallow alcove where a stone attendant, an ageless stone humanoid with a broad, weathered face and folded stone hands, kneels before a crystal tablet. Its surface shows the northern gate and a dark army gathering below it.

Seralyth

Seralyth

There. The gate is watched, and my people are not merely waiting. They are being surrounded.

As Jack reaches toward the tablet, the white flame flares. Heat bites across his palm, leaving a small red mark, while the crystal reveals one final inscription: TRUST THE KEEPER OF THE BLUE DOOR.

Seralyth

Seralyth

The shrine means the elder. We have what we came for, though it has marked you for touching the truth.

They return through the passage and step into the shrine’s main chamber. Jack exits with the elf, and the elderly woman waits beside the blue door as the villagers remain outside.

Mara

Mara

You found the shrine’s warning. Come, both of you. We will speak privately, because the keeper’s name is already part of the danger.

Learn what danger the shrine keeper faces

“You both follow the elder”

The elderly woman leads Jack and the elf through the blue door into a narrow archive chamber. Shelves of clay tablets line the walls, and blue candlelight gathers in the dust.

She closes the door behind them. The shrine’s murmur fades, leaving only the faint ringing of the crystal tablet’s warning in Jack’s marked palm.

Seralyth

Seralyth

You said the keeper’s name is part of the danger. Who are you, truly, and why would the black sun fear this shrine?

Mara

Mara

I am Mara, keeper of the Blue Door. My family guarded this place long before your house vanished beneath ash.

Mara lifts a sealed clay tablet from a high shelf. Its surface bears the same black sun, crossed by a narrow white flame.

Mara

Mara

The army beneath the northern gate is no vision of the future. It is gathering now, and its commander has already learned that the last heir lives.

Seralyth

Seralyth

Then we have no time to waste. Open the tablet, Mara, and tell us what waits on the road.

“I ask Mara what danger threatens her”

SUCCESS (Good Willpower, rolled +2)

Jack

Jack

What danger threatens you, Mara?

Mara sets the sealed tablet on a low stone table. Dust trembles from the shelves as the black sun beneath her fingers begins to glow.

Mara

Mara

The danger is called the Ashen Regent. He commands the army beneath the northern gate, but he was not born to rule.

Mara

Mara

He was once the guardian of your companion’s house. When the old kingdom fell, he bargained with the black sun and became its first servant.

The clay seal cracks by itself. Inside, a thin strip of painted vellum shows a crowned figure kneeling before a dark disc, while a white flame burns behind him.

Mara

Mara

He fears this shrine because the Blue Door can sever the bond that sustains him. But opening it requires the last heir’s blood and a living witness.

Seralyth

Seralyth

Then the danger threatens you because you guard the only door that can end him. And it threatens me because he needs my blood to reach it.
