Rich Man enters the Popsicle Joint without a stated reason. The bell above the glass door gives one tired ring, then the place settles into fluorescent silence.
Rows of frozen treats stand untouched behind the counter. A chalkboard lists flavors and prices, while a small refrigerator hums beneath a window streaked with old rain.

Rich Man
Nothing is happening.
No customers occupy the bright plastic tables. No employee appears behind the register. A napkin trembles near the door whenever a bus passes outside.
The counter holds a calculator, a jar of wooden tasting spoons, and one receipt curled beside the cash drawer. Everything looks ordinary, if slightly neglected.
Beyond the front windows, traffic rolls along the avenue. Inside the Popsicle Joint, the only movement is the refrigerator fan turning steadily in the empty room.
“I take a popsicle and start eating it.”
SUCCESS (Good Agility, rolled +1)

Rich Man opens the freezer case, selects a wrapped orange popsicle, and removes it from the wooden spoon rack’s shadow. The wrapper crackles loudly in the empty shop.
He peels the paper down and bites into the frozen bar. Cold sweetness spreads across his tongue while the refrigerator continues its steady mechanical hum.

Rich Man
The popsicle is cold, and the price remains written on the chalkboard.
A small smear of orange melts along the stick and touches his fingers. Outside, a bus passes, briefly washing the windows with reflected motion.
The receipt beside the cash drawer stays curled and undisturbed. No employee emerges, and no voice answers the ordinary sounds of eating.
Rich Man finishes another bite beneath the fluorescent lights. The Popsicle Joint remains empty, its silence interrupted only by the wrapper and the fan.
“I punch the popsicle case.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Strength, rolled -1)

Rich Man drives his fist into the clear plastic popsicle case. The panel cracks across its corner, and the metal frame rings through the empty shop.
Several wrapped popsicles tumble inside the case, knocking against one another. A loose strip of trim drops onto the floor beside his shoe.

Rich Man
The case is damaged, and my knuckles hurt.
The punch leaves his hand reddened and swelling at the first two knuckles. Cold air leaks through the new fracture in the case, carrying the smell of orange syrup.
The impact jolts the counter. The curled receipt slips free, skates across the laminate, and unfolds beneath the fluorescent light.
Its printed line is visible now: one orange popsicle, paid in cash, with a time stamped twelve minutes earlier. The cash drawer remains shut.
“I call for anybody”
FAILURE (Terrible Willpower, rolled -1)

Rich Man
Anybody here?
His call crosses the empty shop and returns thinly from the back wall. No employee answers, but the sharp volume sets the cracked plastic panel ticking as it settles.
The receipt skitters again in the draft, flipping onto its reverse side. A handwritten note shows through the fluorescent glare beneath a smear of orange.

Rich Man
The receipt has writing on the back.
The note reads, “CASH SHORT AGAIN. CHECK THE CAMERA,” followed by a time and two initials. The words are cramped, written in dark blue ink.
His voice has produced no person, only a new lead and the brittle rattle of damaged plastic. The refrigerator fan resumes its dominance over the room.

“I pick up a random call”
SUCCESS (Good Perception, rolled +4)

A telephone rings from beneath the counter, startlingly loud in the fluorescent quiet. The receiver rests beside the calculator, connected by a coiled black cord.
Rich Man reaches behind the counter, lifts the receiver, and brings it to his ear. The ringing stops, replaced by a faint line hiss.

Jonas Sutter
Popsicle Joint? Good. I was beginning to think nobody was there.
The caller is an adult man speaking from somewhere beyond the shop, his voice compressed and slightly muffled by the connection. Traffic murmurs faintly behind him.

Jonas Sutter
Listen carefully. The camera receipt is not about a customer. Check the delivery entrance, and do not trust the clock.
The line remains open after the warning. On the counter, the handwritten note and its timestamp sit beneath the receiver’s shadow.
“Check the delivery entrance”
SUCCESS (Mediocre Investigation, rolled +0)

Rich Man sets the receiver down and crosses behind the counter. A narrow corridor leads to a steel delivery door marked EMPLOYEES ONLY, its lower edge filmed with street grit.
He tests the handle, then shoulders it open. The door gives with a loud metallic scrape, revealing a cramped loading alcove behind the shop and a delivery ramp descending toward the alley.

Rich Man
The delivery entrance is open, and the clock on the wall is stopped at 2:17.
A cardboard carton sits just outside, its label torn away. Beside it, tire tracks cross the damp concrete, while a paper delivery log lies pinned beneath a broken clipboard.
Rich Man lifts the log. The pages show a delivery recorded at 2:17, but the carbon copy beneath it bears a later handwritten correction in blue ink.
The door swings back on its spring and catches his reddened knuckles against the frame. Pain flashes through the swelling, and the clipboard clatters down the ramp.

Jonas Sutter
You found it, then. Check what was delivered, not what was signed for.

“Check what was delivered and get the caller to identify himself”
FAILURE (Mediocre Investigation, rolled -3)

Rich Man looks from the carton to the delivery log, then toward the counter where the telephone receiver lies out of reach. The evidence is close, but neither object is in his possession.

Rich Man
What was delivered? And identify yourself.
His questions carry through the open delivery door, but the receiver cannot carry his voice back. From the counter, the caller’s faint line hiss continues without an answer.

Jonas Sutter
I heard you. I am not giving you a name until you tell me what you found.
Rich Man steps toward the carton, but the broken clipboard shifts beneath its edge. The carton slides down the damp ramp, strikes the wall, and splits open.
Several sealed vanilla popsicle sleeves spill across the concrete, mixed with a small envelope stamped DELIVERY COPY. The carbon log remains above, its corrected time suddenly less useful.

Jonas Sutter
You still have the shop phone. Pick it up, and maybe I will tell you who is speaking.
“I pick up the shop phone and inspect the DELIVERY COPY envelope”
SUCCESS (Mediocre Investigation, rolled +1)

Rich Man leaves the delivery log on the ramp and steps back into the shop. He lifts the receiver, keeping the black cord taut between counter and doorway.

Jonas Sutter
Good. Now inspect the envelope. Tell me whether it is sealed, and read the copy number if you can.
With the receiver pressed to his ear, Rich Man crouches beside the spilled sleeves and picks up the envelope stamped DELIVERY COPY. Its flap is already unsealed.
Inside is a folded duplicate invoice. It lists twelve vanilla popsicles, but the carton holds only eight. The copy number reads VC-184, handwritten in blue ink.

Rich Man
The delivery copy records four more popsicles than the carton contains.

Jonas Sutter
There is your shortage. The shop clock was altered to make the delivery look earlier, and someone removed four sleeves before signing.
A second mark circles the invoice total: PAID CASH. Beneath it, in smaller handwriting, are the initials J.S. and a note directing the driver to use the rear entrance.

“I compare J.S. against the delivery log and demand the caller give me his name.”
SUCCESS (Great Interrogation, rolled +0)

Rich Man lays the folded invoice beside the delivery log on the ramp. The blue initials on the correction match the J.S. written beneath the cash notation.

Rich Man
J.S. appears on both records. Give me your name.
He keeps the receiver against his ear while comparing the slanted strokes. The stopped shop clock and the altered delivery time remain fixed facts beside the matching initials.

Jonas Sutter
Fair enough. My name is Jonas Sutter. I handled deliveries for this shop until last month.
The caller's voice tightens briefly, then steadies. Beyond him, a vehicle door shuts and traffic washes through the telephone line.

Jonas Sutter
Those initials are mine, but I did not remove the four sleeves. I signed what the manager put in front of me.
The invoice, log, and envelope now connect J.S. to the delivery without proving who changed the count. The receiver remains warm against Rich Man's ear.
