The god-forged library unfolds around Üneen in vast tiers of black marble and star-metal, its sealed doors trembling beneath distant blows. Blue fire gutters in a broken ritual circle.
A young adult elf man kneels within the circle, lean beneath a torn green cloak, silver hair braided with red thread. Ink-dark sigils stain his hands, and a harp lies cracked beside him.

Caelir
Do not step into the circle. It remembers every name spoken here, and the hunters beyond those doors are very good at borrowing them.
Beyond the sealed bronze doors, armored voices echo through the stacks, demanding surrender. Their words arrive muffled, but the threat beneath them carries cleanly.

Caelir
I sought the lost song of Avariel, the first bard. I found only its beginning, and now the library will not let it end.
Shelves groan. From between their ancient volumes, a melody rises without singer or instrument, tender and salt-deep, shaped with a cadence that brushes against Üneen’s deepest memories.

Caelir
You hear it too. Then tell me, sea-witch, whether that voice is calling you home, or calling something else through you.

““Üneen had only just entered in this section of the library having previously gotten lost wandering its halls looking startled as things in front of her seemed to be unfolding rather quickly…” No! I… I don’t recognize this song… at least… not really… uhh… it SEEMS familiar but… I’m unsure! How can I help!?!! “She shot a look of worry to the silver haired elf””
FAILURE (Fair Willpower, rolled -1)

Üneen has only just emerged from the library’s twisting halls, still startled by how swiftly the shelves and shadows seemed to rearrange themselves around her.

Üneen
No! I... I don’t recognize this song. At least, not really. It seems familiar, but I’m unsure. How can I help?
She shoots the silver-haired elf a worried look. The melody falters at her uncertainty, then bends toward the cracked harp instead of answering her directly.

Caelir
You can help by not naming what you hear. The library seizes certainty more eagerly than fear.
One blue flame gutters out. In its fading light, a narrow seam appears between two shelves, revealing a stair descending beneath the ritual circle.

Caelir
That is new. The song is offering a quieter route, perhaps because you refused to complete its memory.

Caelir
If you want to help, choose whether we follow that stair or remain here and face the hunters when the doors open.
““Üneen didn’t understand what was happening exactly nor did she understand what the elf meant by saying the library seizes certainty… But at the mention of choosing between the suddenly newly formed stairs or dealing with potentially dangerous hunters without knowing why she should even have to run into them at all… the choice for her seemed simple enough.” The stairs it is then! “She shrugged hurrying along toward them.””
SUCCESS (Fair Agility, rolled +0)

Üneen shrugs and hurries toward the newly formed stair, her shell-staff striking marble once as she crosses the broken ritual circle. The hidden steps receive her.
The descent is narrow and steep, spiraling beneath the library. Her hurried footfall sends a sharp echo upward, and dust spills from the shelves above.

Caelir
Quietly, if you can. The hunters heard that.
The elf snatches up his cracked harp and follows, cloak catching briefly on a jagged shelf. Behind them, the bronze doors shudder under a heavier blow.

Caelir
Certainty is a hook here. Name a thing as true, and the library may build a path toward it, whether you want that path or not.

Üneen
The stairs are real beneath my feet, but I still do not understand the song.
At the stair’s foot, Üneen emerges into a low chamber of pale stone and shallow seawater. The passage behind her seals with a soft click, leaving the hunters above.

“Since Üneen’s mermaid tail transformation is triggered by seawater is it ok to transform in this scene?”
YES (Likely, rolled 26)

The shallow seawater glimmers around Üneen’s ankles, and its ancient magic recognizes her nature. Here, transformation is possible without violating the library’s hidden laws.

Üneen
The water answers me, but the song remains unknown.
Ripples travel outward from her feet, carrying a muted pulse through the pale chamber. The sealed stair gives no sign of reopening.

Caelir
Then the sea has not abandoned you. That matters. The library may have brought us somewhere it cannot easily rewrite.
The cracked harp trembles in the elf fugitive’s grasp, answering the water with one faint, dissonant note. Far above, the hunters’ blows vanish completely.

Caelir
Do not mistake permission for safety. Whatever sings below us knew you would come.
““ Looks down in shock as her feet were now met with ankle deep seawater… getting wet in general can trigger her mermaid transformation but it was especially the case with seawater particularly and as luck would have it sure enough… her legs would painfully begin to shift back into a fish tail. Üneen would instantly fall into the water loosing strength and balance as her legs began to merge, shift, and crack until a beautiful large fish tail had formed in their place showing her true mermaid nature shimmering like a silvery seabass… her fin flicking violently for a moment before the transformation was complete leaving Üneen trembling sobbing and panting… the change always took a violent but beautiful toll on her as she lay on her side trying to gather her strength and composure her staff resting just beside her having fallen when she did.” I.. I just need a moment… i’m so sorry… it always hurts so much.”
SUCCESS (Great Health, rolled +2)
Üneen looks down in shock as seawater surrounds her ankles. Its magic catches her at once, draining the strength from her legs as they begin to draw together.
She collapses onto her side, splashing shallow water across the pale stone. Her legs merge and reshape in a painful, luminous shift, scales shimmering like a silvery seabass.
The new tail lashes violently once, then again, scattering ripples through the chamber before settling. Her shell-staff slips from her grasp and lands beside her with a hard clatter.
When the transformation ends, Üneen lies trembling and breathless, her broad fish tail gleaming beneath the blue light. The change is complete, but its toll leaves her strength badly spent.

Üneen
I... I just need a moment. I'm so sorry. It always hurts so much.

Caelir
Do not apologize for surviving your own nature. Breathe slowly. The water is holding you, and I will guard the passage.
The elf kneels beyond the ripples, keeping his hands away from her and the harp close to his chest. The chamber’s hidden melody softens into a low, watchful chord.

“I’m apologizing because this is such an awkward time to have sprung a tail… “She sighs” I don’t even know if the water level in this chamber gets deep enough to swim let alone what’s in it or where it’s even coming into the chamber from… it’s rather vast in this library and a bit dark down here for me to make heads or tails of anything… no pun intended… but… “ She pauses… is it a good time to ask more about you? And also about this… familiar melody or tune we seem to keep hearing now and then? Or am I confused? Is it your harp that’s playing it? Is it one of those enchanted harps that can play itself?…. Sorry for all of the questions… I’m just… trying to understand things more clearly.”
SUCCESS (Great Perception, rolled +0)

Üneen
I’m sorry. This is an awkward time to have sprung a tail. I don’t know whether this chamber is deep enough to swim, what’s in it, or where the water comes from.
Üneen sighs, her tail stirring the shallows. The movement sends a cold ripple beneath the pale stone, and her shell-staff rolls just beyond her reach.

Üneen
It’s vast and dark down here, and I’m trying to understand. Is this a good time to ask more about you, the melody, and whether your harp plays itself?

Caelir
Ask. I am Caelir, last keeper of Avariel’s unfinished song. The harp is cracked, not enchanted to play alone, though it answers magic when I touch it.

Caelir
The melody comes from the library beneath the library. It borrows the harp’s shape, but the water carries its true voice. It has followed us intermittently.
Caelir reaches toward the fallen staff, then stops short, honoring his promise. The water brightens instead, revealing channels descending into darkness and a broad submerged arch.

Caelir
Those channels draw from an underground sea, far deeper than this chamber. Something lives beyond that arch. Your questions have clarified the danger, but the song has noticed you.
““Looked confused blinking a bit as she reached for her staff just barely managing to grasp it before sitting up and resting it across her lap as she held it.” Channels? Danger? Noticed me? I’m SO confused… “Her brow raised at the mention on an arch however and she began to peer around for it… SURE enough! There it was! An arch way off in the distance the top edge of which was visible just above the water’s surface the rest of it submerged as apparently the chamber got lower there meaning it was deep enough to swim beyond that point… it must have been a small set of steps that caused the chamber to go a bit deeper underneath the water in that area… but it now peaked her curiosity…” Should we keep moving? And wait… what did you mean by something is living beyond the arch? How can you tell and… does it have malicious intent?… “She gulped a bit hugging her staff close to her chest…””
SUCCESS (Great Perception, rolled +0)

Üneen blinks through her confusion and reaches across the shallows. Her fingers catch the shell-staff; she draws it close, sits upright, and rests it across her lap.

Üneen
Channels? Danger? Did it notice me? I’m so confused. Should we keep moving? What did you mean by something living beyond the arch? How can you tell, and does it have malicious intent?
Her raised brow follows the brightened channels. Across the chamber, a submerged stair descends into deeper water, where the upper edge of a broad stone arch breaks the surface.
The water beyond the arch is dark enough to swim through, its depths concealed beneath the pale chamber. A slow current travels outward, carrying a pressure like a distant breath.

Caelir
I can tell because the channels change around it. The water bends toward that darkness, and the song falls silent whenever I listen too closely.

Caelir
As for malice, I cannot claim certainty. I sense awareness, patience, and hunger perhaps, but not an intent clearly turned against us.
Caelir rises carefully, keeping his cracked harp against his chest. Beneath the arch, something stirs the black water once, then becomes still.

“Well let’s not walk into the unknown… or.. “she pauses looking down at her shimmering silvery sea bass mermaid tail” Swim… I mean… “She lefts her long spiked spiral conch shell staff up high from her seated position in the water as her tail fin soft flicks and makes an attempt to cast a spell to reveal exactly what is in their path as she summons energy from the seawater around her and draws from the divine to seek a knowing she could not otherwise know unless it’s revealed to her or in this case… both of them””
SUCCESS (Legendary Magic, rolled +1)

Üneen
Well, let’s not walk into the unknown. Or... swim, I mean.
Üneen raises her long, spiked conch staff from the shallows. Her silvery sea-bass tail flicks softly as seawater coils around the shell and gathers divine light.
The spell passes through the arch without disturbing the current. Darkness clarifies into a vast vaulted cavern, its floor carpeted with luminous kelp and ancient white stones.
Beyond the kelp rests a colossal sea wyrm, genderless and ancient, long as a cathedral nave, armored in blue-black plates and crowned with branching coral. Its eyes remain closed.
The knowing settles cleanly into Üneen and Caelir alike: the creature is awake, aware, and hungry, but not malicious. It guards a sealed pearl door at the cavern’s far wall.

Caelir
A sea wyrm. Ancient, certainly, but not hunting us. That door behind it bears the same unfinished cadence as Avariel’s song.

Caelir
Your magic revealed the truth without naming it. Perhaps the library cannot twist what the sea itself has shown us.
““ Üneen blinked in confusion” So… heh heh… funny thing… I don’t know if you noticed or not but ummm… i’m FROM the sea myself “she said sarcastically” and I have never encountered a sea wyrm… and I can’t actually recall any information about them off the top of my head this instant… also… the water level is much deeper than I thought for this section of the chamber to hold a resting sea wyrm AND what looks like a magical door covered in pearls…. Maybe I have something in my purse that can help us? This round lumpy looking mass at my hip is actually an oyster the size of a dinner plate that has been fashioned into a purse… I love it! It’s so pretty… “she runs her finger across the chain purse strap crossed over her like a messenger bag… the chain was interwoven with thin strips of fabric and netting some bits of which had tiny little pearls, brown and amber sea glass beads, and patches of tiny little barnacles” Hopefully I left a book inside that can help us out.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Lore, rolled +0)

Üneen
So... funny thing. I’m from the sea myself, and I’ve never encountered a sea wyrm. I can’t recall anything useful about them right now.

Üneen
And this chamber is deeper than it looked. There’s room for the wyrm and that pearl-covered magical door. Maybe my purse has something helpful.
Üneen runs a finger along the oyster purse at her hip. Its woven chain glitters with tiny pearls, brown and amber sea glass, netting, and delicate barnacle patches.
She opens the dinner-plate-sized shell and searches among its contents. Her fingers find a salt-stiffened blue book, and she draws it free, its cover marked with a silver wyrm coiled around a pearl.

Caelir
That is more than helpful. The archivists of Avariel kept a bestiary of deep guardians, and that binding bears their seal.
The sea wyrm remains motionless beyond the luminous kelp, but one closed eye shifts beneath its armored lid. The pearl door answers with a faint, resonant chime.

Caelir
If the book explains either guardian or door, we should read it here, quietly. The cavern has already noticed your knowledge.

Break the song's hold on Üneen's perceptions
““She would nod and motion for the elf to come closer so they could whisper directly to one another reading the book together and quietly going over information on facts about sea wyrms in general and any information about this or any particular one that guards a pearl door especially seeing as the cover of the book seemed to reflect the very situation at present… “ Oh look here! “ She whispered softly in his cute ear pointing to some seemingly helpful information as she sat in the water with her silver shimmering sea-bass mermaid tail softly flitting her great broad caudal fin at her side looking like she was curled up with a good book…. Which technically she was… the elf reading over her shoulder at where her finger was pressed on the page as their backs were turned away from the archway leading to a deep underwater chamber with the resting sea wyrm wrapped around the ornate pearl encrusted door her staff resting across the lap of her mermaid tail””
SUCCESS (Legendary Lore, rolled +2)

Üneen nods and beckons Caelir closer. With her staff resting across her silver tail, she settles in the shallows and opens the blue bestiary across her lap.
They turn their backs to the archway, whispering over the pages while luminous water laps around Üneen’s broad caudal fin. The pearl-marked cover mirrors the cavern exactly.

Üneen
Oh, look here!
Her finger presses a passage describing pearlwardens: ancient sea wyrms bound to sealed thresholds, awakened by unfinished songs and compelled to test intent rather than obey commands.

Caelir
There. It says the door opens only when the warden recognizes a keeper, a petitioner, or a bearer of the song’s missing cadence. Force would awaken its hunger.
Further notes identify the pearl door as a memory seal. It responds to truthful knowledge freely offered, while false names cause the guardian and the chamber to forget the speaker’s path.

Caelir
The book confirms what the water showed us. This wyrm is not merely guarding the door. It is part of the lock.
