The Scarred Thief

Drayden enters a thieves' den lit by glittering blue lamps. An exiled lord stands over a fallen messenger, while stolen maps cover the tables and half-drawn blades ring the room.

The lord is a broad-shouldered middle-aged man in a weather-dark cloak, with iron-gray hair and a signetless hand. The messenger, a young adult woman in a torn courier's coat with a slim build, freckled face, cropped auburn hair, and mud-stained boots, clutches a sealed tube.

Lord Cael... beware Veyr. He has found the road beneath the road.

Lord Cael

Lord Cael

Veyr is dead. That accusation bought my exile once already.

The messenger's grip slackens. Around her, three thieves exchange wary looks instead of surprise, their blades lowering by inches.

We heard the same warning from the mapmaker. Same name. Same impossible road.

Then someone wants this room to believe a ghost still gives orders.

Obtain the messenger's sealed tube

“Silently pray for the fallen messenger, and wait for my client, the exiled Lord Cael, to finish his business here.”

Drayden lowers his head beside the fallen messenger and silently offers a sailor's prayer. Blue lamplight trembles across his white ponytail and scarred face.

The room grows quiet around him. Even the thieves keep their voices low, leaving the sealed tube undisturbed in the messenger's slackened hand.

Lord Cael

Search every map. If Veyr commands this road, his hand must leave a mark somewhere.

Lord Lord Cael gathers the scattered charts, studying old ink and faded trail signs while the scarred thief points out routes through the border hills.

The mapmaker vanished three nights ago. His room was empty, but the floor held fresh dust.

Then we follow the dust, not the rumor. Keep the messenger's warning sealed until we know who else has heard it.

At last, Lord Cael folds the chosen maps beneath his cloak. The thieves stand ready, and the den settles into a tense, watchful silence as he turns toward Drayden.

“Close the messenger's eyes before addressing Lord Cael.”

Drayden gently closes the messenger's eyes. The blue lamps glimmer over her still face, and the sealed tube remains undisturbed in her slackened hand.

Lord Cael waits without interrupting, one hand resting on the maps beneath his cloak. The thieves watch Drayden with guarded respect.

Drayden addresses Lord Cael, asking whether Veyr is truly dead.

Lord Cael

Lord Cael

I saw no body. I saw the tower burn, and I saw Veyr fall into the flames. That is what I know.

Lord Cael

Lord Cael

If he survived, then my exile was only the first move in his game.

His gaze drops to the messenger, then returns to Drayden. For the first time, certainty leaves his expression, replaced by an old, tightly guarded doubt.

“Speak in my thick islander accent. "If ye can't make sense of the message, then ye gotta find the sense. I don' think we'll find that sense in this den, Cael. We best be trudging on."”

If ye can't make sense o' the message, then ye gotta find the sense. I don' think we'll find it in this den, Cael. We best be trudging on.

The island cadence rolls through the blue-lit room, but Lord Lord Cael does not move. His hand tightens over the maps, and the thieves' guarded respect turns wary again.

Lord Cael

Lord Cael

Not yet. Leaving with only a warning would make us blind on the road, and I have been blind long enough.

Then his eyes settle on the sealed tube. He kneels beside the messenger, careful not to disturb her hand, and studies the dark wax beneath the blue light.

Lord Cael

Lord Cael

There. This is no courier's seal. It bears the old roadwardens' mark, the one used beneath the border hills.

The Scarred Thief

The Scarred Thief

The mapmaker's room was under those hills. If the tube came through his hands, the dust trail may lead somewhere after all.

Lord Cael rises with the maps still beneath his cloak, his decision hardened but redirected. The den has yielded one usable lead, and the hidden road now beckons beyond its walls.

“Cross my arms as I recall the days of roadwardens and their tolls. "A message thirty years in tha' making? Unda tha' hills? Ya sure know how to stretch this contract between us, Cael."”

Drayden crosses his arms, recalling the old roadwardens: grim keepers of hill passes who collected tolls, recorded names, and marked hidden routes beneath the border stones.

A message thirty years in tha' making? Unda tha' hills? Ya sure know how to stretch this contract between us, Cael.

The memory fits the seal. Roadwardens sometimes carried sealed instructions between successor posts, but such a message could wait decades if a route was abandoned. The recollection costs precious minutes as the den's unease deepens.

Lord Cael

Lord Cael

The mark is genuine, then. Old, but genuine. It does not prove Veyr lives. It proves someone revived a roadwarden channel.

The Scarred Thief

And every minute we stand here gives whoever sent it time to clear the hills.

Cael draws the sealed tube from the messenger's slackened hand without breaking its wax. He offers it across the blue-lit room, his expression hardening.

Lord Cael

Lord Cael

You wanted sense, Drayden. Help me find it beneath the hills. Then we learn whether Veyr is a ghost, or merely patient.

“"Help?" I scoff "Help ain't cheap, boss man."”

Help ain't cheap, boss man.

Drayden's scoff lands lightly, but the den hears the bargain beneath it. Lord Cael studies him, then lowers the sealed tube without offering it.

Lord Cael

Lord Cael

You mistake urgency for charity. I have no purse to open here, and no coin I can promise tonight.

The refusal leaves Drayden's price unanswered rather than agreed. Lord Cael's thumb presses against the wax, and a faint ridge of lettering shows beneath the seal.

Lord Cael

But the roadwarden mark names a successor post. Its ledger should record tolls, routes, and any payment left for contracted hands.

The scarred thief leans over the nearest chart and taps a ravine east of the border hills. The route is longer, but it offers a usable answer: find the post before the hidden road.

The Scarred Thief

If there is coin waiting, it will be in that ledger's keeping. If not, we lose only a day's march and learn who reopened the channel.

“"Then I ain't got no choice. I just pray this chicken chase is worth my time." Reluctantly, I gesture towards the door. "Lead on then, boss man."”

Drayden gestures toward the den's door, but his feet do not follow at once. The blue lamps catch his scarred face as reluctance holds him fast.

Lord Cael

Lord Cael

No. Not like this. I will not drag a half-convinced ranger beneath those hills.

Cael steps between Drayden and the exit, extending the sealed tube instead of taking the lead. Behind him, the thieves begin gathering cloaks and blades.

Lord Cael

Lord Cael

Carry the message, and walk beside me as a contracted hand. Refuse, and I go with the scarred thief alone.

The offer turns the journey into a choice of trust rather than simple obedience. The successor post waits eastward, while the unbroken wax rests heavily in Cael's palm.

The Scarred Thief

Make it quick. The hills keep their secrets better after sunset.

“With a scowl, I snatch the message from Cael's hand. "Yeah, yeah. I'm wit you, Cael." I tuck the tube into my cloak. "Contracted... Bombaclat...." I roll my eyes as I wait for the pair outside the den.”

Yeah, yeah. I'm wit you, Cael. Contracted... Bombaclat.

With a sharp scowl, Drayden snatches the sealed tube from Cael's palm before the lord can lower it. The wax remains unbroken.

He tucks the message beneath his green cloak and rolls his eyes, while Cael watches the swift theft with a restrained, almost weary approval.

Lord Cael

Lord Cael

A graceful acceptance, ranger. Keep the seal intact, and the ledger may yet make this contract worthwhile.

The scarred thief shoulders a dark pack and slips through the den's door. Cael follows, pausing only long enough to ensure Drayden comes behind him.

Outside, cold evening air replaces the den's blue lamplight. Drayden waits beside the rough stone wall with Cael and the scarred thief, ready to lead east.

There. The road is clear for now. Move before sunset leaves us blind.
