Arthur’s art studio is a cave of warm lamplight and scattered mess, canvases stacked against the walls, paper scraps on the floor, the air sharp with turpentine and dust.

Abby steps in, and the room seems to hold its breath. By the tallest canvas, Arthur freezes, charcoal slipping from his fingers and tapping the floor.

Arthur

Arthur

Abby.

He stares at her, blue-black hair falling into his eyes, ink staining his knuckles. His shoulders draw tight, like he is bracing for a blow he has been waiting years to take.

Arthur

Arthur

You came.

Abby’s silence lands between them, heavy and immediate, while the charcoal roll edges past a paint rag and stops at her boot.

Arthur

Arthur

I was starting to think you would never come back here. Are you staying long?

I pick up the charcoal and hold it out to him, my hand trembling slightly as I take a step toward him and finally admit why I stayed away for so long.

Arthur

Abby bends, scoops up the charcoal, and crosses the last few steps with it held out on an open palm. Her hand trembles, just enough to smear a black streak across her fingers.

Arthur

Arthur

You kept away because of me?

Abby

Abby

No. I stayed away because I got scared, and I did not know how to come back.

Arthur takes the charcoal from her hand. His shoulders loosen, but his eyes stay fixed on her, searching her face like he is reading a sketch that changed overnight.

Arthur

Arthur

I thought you were done with me.

The studio goes very still around that admission, warm lamplight catching on the fresh graphite smudge on Abby’s palm.

Arthur

Arthur

Tell me the truth, Abby. What happened?

Arthur

Abby draws a breath and lets it out slow, keeping her eyes on Arthur instead of the floor. The words come carefully, but once they start, they do not stop.

Abby

Abby

I left because I cared about you too much to risk ruining what we had. Then I got scared, and the longer I stayed away, the harder it was to come back.

Arthur goes still. The charcoal in his hand lowers a little, and his face changes with every sentence, hurt giving way to recognition.

Arthur

Arthur

So it was never nothing. It was fear.

He looks past her shoulder for a heartbeat, blinking hard, then meets her eyes again. The studio feels less like a museum of old silence and more like a room that has finally been reopened.

Arthur

Arthur

You could have told me that years ago.

Then his mouth softens, almost reluctantly, and he tips the charcoal toward the sketchboard beside him.

Arthur

Arthur

I never stopped drawing you. There is a portrait in there, unfinished, and I think you should see it.

I look at his drawinga of me, noting how they depict me from before i started bodybuilding and i jokingly flex an arm saying ive changed a lot in our time apart but its relieving to know he hasn't changed at all.

FAILURE (Great Charm, rolled -3)

Abby steps closer to the sketchboard, letting her eyes travel over the unfinished portrait. The lines are older than her current muscles, softer in the shoulders, all remembered angles and a face he has not let go of.

Abby

Abby

He drew me before the competition changes.

She lifts one arm and gives it a small flex, trying for lightness. The joke lands sideways in the quiet, more tender than teasing.

Abby

Abby

I have changed a lot since then.

Arthur

Arthur

Yeah. You really have.

Arthur’s answer comes with a breath that almost becomes a laugh. He studies her arm, then her face, as if comparing the portrait to the woman in front of him.

Arthur

Arthur

But I guess some things stayed the same.

He lowers the charcoal toward the page again, not quite drawing yet. The room goes still around that pause, warm and exposed, like both of them are waiting to see whether she steps into it.

SUCCESS (Great Charm, rolled +1)

Abby studies the portrait, and the older version of her staring back feels like a stranger with familiar eyes. The room stays quiet, but the tension has thinned enough to breathe through.

Abby

Abby

I’ve changed a lot since then.

She lifts an arm and flexes again, this time with a crooked grin. The joke is gentle, almost careful, aimed at easing the tenderness between them.

Abby

Abby

At least you haven’t.

Arthur

Arthur

Arthur’s mouth twitches, then settles into a soft smile. “Yeah, I’m still here.”

He looks from her arm to the unfinished face on the page, then back to her, as if the drawing and the woman are finally meeting in the same room.

Arthur

Arthur

“I kept drawing you because it felt like you were still part of the studio.”

I tell Arthur about the crush i had on him in high-school and how od like to give a real relationship a chance if he's willing to let me back into his life.

Abby

Abby

I need to say this plainly. I had a crush on you in high school, and I still want to see if we can try for something real, if you’ll let me back into your life.

The words hang between the canvases like fresh paint. Abby does not rush to fill the silence, and the studio seems to hold its breath with her.

Arthur

Arthur

She means it. She actually means it.

Arthur

Arthur

Abby... I never stopped hoping you might come back.

Arthur’s fingers tighten around the charcoal, then loosen. His shoulders drop as if some long-held strain finally gives way.

Arthur

Arthur

If you want a chance, I want that too. I just need to know you’re really here, with me.

He looks at her like he is choosing honesty over fear, the unfinished portrait resting between them as proof that this moment has been waiting a long time.

I wrap my arms around him and hug him tightly, telling him that im here and im not going anywhere.

Arthur

Abby steps in and wraps both arms around him, pulling him close without hesitation. The studio seems to soften around them as his charcoal hand hovers, then finds a careful place against her back.

Arthur

Arthur

You’re here.

He folds into the hug, all that guarded stiffness draining out of his shoulders at once. His breath shudders out against her hair, relieved and a little disbelieving.

Abby

Abby

I’m here. I’m not going anywhere.

Arthur

Arthur

This is real. She chose to say it, and she’s holding on.

Arthur eases back just enough to look at her, his hand still lingering at her side. The unfinished portrait waits behind him, but his attention stays fixed on Abby like he is afraid to look away.

Arthur

Arthur

Then stay a minute longer. Tell me what you want this to be.

I want to hold you in my arms and keep you safe and secure, mentally physically and emotionally. I want to support your passion fir art by going to your events and watching you work if you agree to do the same with my passion for fitness. I want this studio to become our forever home where we will hopefully start a family together. And I want to call you mine through it all.

FAILURE (Good Empathy, rolled -2)

Abby stays close, her hands easing from his shoulders to his upper arms, firm but gentle. The words she means to offer seem too big for one breath, so she lets the silence carry them first.

Abby

Abby

I want this to be real. Us, the studio, all of it. I want to stand beside you, and I want you beside me too.

Arthur blinks, caught between hope and the shape of all that promise. His grip tightens once, then loosens, as if he is testing whether the moment holds.

Arthur

Arthur

That is real. I just, I did not think I got to hear it out loud.

Abby’s reach toward forever lands a little crooked. He hears the devotion, but the future she names is too vast, too fast, and it leaves him looking startled rather than swept away.

Arthur

Arthur

I want to show up for your meets, Abby. I want you here when I paint. Just, maybe let the rest grow with us, not all at once.

That gentler answer settles between them like a hand offered palm up. Behind Arthur, the unfinished portrait catches the studio light, no longer just a painting, but a place where both their lives could still be drawn in.

Arthur

Arthur

Then let us do it properly. I will come to your competitions, and you can come here, and we can learn each other’s worlds instead of guessing at them.

Arthur’s hand finds the back of Abby’s shoulder, steady and careful. The portrait behind him, half-lit on the easel, seems to catch the same promise.

Arthur

Arthur

And this studio, if you want it, can be ours to build. Not a fantasy, just a home we make piece by piece.

He glances down, then back up with a soft, awed smile, the kind that looks both terrified and certain.

Arthur

Arthur

As for mine, Abby, you can say it. I think I have been yours for a very long time.

He closes his eyes at the touch, breathing out like the tension finally has somewhere to go.

When they part, Arthur stays close, forehead nearly touching hers, his hands still warm at her back.

Arthur

Arthur

I have wanted that for so long.

The words land softly, and his smile breaks open into something shy and almost disbelieving.

Arthur

Arthur

If you are willing, I want to build this with you, for real.

The studio goes quiet around them, the portrait on the easel holding their future in pale charcoal lines.

Abby slips an arm under Arthur’s knees and the other behind his back, lifting him cleanly from the floor with an ease that makes the moment feel startlingly gentle. He gives a small, breathless laugh and clutches at her shoulder.

Arthur

Arthur

You make that look unfairly easy.

She carries him across the studio, past the easel and the charcoal dust, while he keeps his face tucked close, smiling like he is afraid to blink and lose this.

The couch gives softly when Abby sits, Arthur settling with her in the same motion, close enough that their knees touch and neither of them pulls away.

Arthur

Arthur

She is really here. Not a memory, not a sketch, here.

He turns his head to look at her, hope still bright but steadier now, as if the room itself has finally stopped holding its breath.

Arthur

I kept thinking, if I ever got this chance, I would say something clever. But I just want you here with me.

The words settle between them without strain, like they have always belonged there. Arthur goes very still, then his whole face breaks open with relief.

Arthur

Arthur

Forever is a huge promise. I would like to believe you anyway.

He lifts a hand, hesitates for only a heartbeat, then lets his fingers brush Abby’s cheek as if confirming she is real.

Arthur

Arthur

She said it. She really stayed long enough to say it.

The studio feels smaller now, not crowded, just held together by the two of them and the unfinished portrait watching quietly from across the room.

Arthur

Arthur

Then stay for tonight, at least. Let me make this feel like home for both of us.

I lay back on the couch and pull Arthur down with me so he's laying on top of me telling him I'll be more than happy to stay tonight

Abby shifts back on the couch, tugging Arthur with her. He gives a surprised breath, then lets himself be guided down until he settles over her, careful and warm.

His weight is light, his arms braced on either side of her, his face close enough that he has to laugh softly at how impossible this suddenly feels.

Arthur

Arthur

You are incredibly strong, Abby.

Arthur

Arthur

And you keep choosing me anyway.

Abby

Abby

I am very happy to stay tonight.

The words land in the small space between them, and Arthur’s shoulders loosen as if some hidden knot finally gives way.

Arthur

Arthur

Then stay. We can make tea, or do nothing, and I will still count it as perfect.

I tell him that right now i just wanna cuddle with him in my arms

SUCCESS (Great Charm, rolled -1)

Abby pulls him a little closer, settling both arms around him like she means it. The couch creaks softly under their shared weight.

Abby

Abby

I just want to cuddle with you in my arms, right now.

Arthur

Arthur

Arthur lets out a small, helpless laugh, then melts into the hold. "Yeah. I can do that."

He shifts carefully, turning so his shoulder fits against her chest instead of hovering over her.

Arthur

Arthur

This feels real. Her arms are warm, and he stops pretending he needs to be brave every second.

A little pollen smudge from the studio brushes Abby’s sleeve as he settles, a tiny mess from all the closeness.

Arthur

Arthur

If you want, I can stay like this for a very long time.

Arthur’s breath catches, and his arms tighten around her waist. “Yeah. I want that.”

He shifts his weight lower against her, getting comfortable instead of careful for once. The couch gives a long, soft sigh under them.

Arthur

Arthur

She asked. She really wants him here, not as a maybe, not as a memory.

Arthur reaches for the nearby throw blanket with one hand and drags it over both of them, then relaxes back into Abby’s arms.

Arthur

Arthur

I can do quiet with you. I think I’ve wanted to do this for years.

The studio settles around them, paint, paper, and hush holding still while Abby keeps him close. Arthur’s forehead rests against her shoulder, and neither of them moves to break it.

Abby keeps him tucked close and lets the quiet do the talking. Her hand moves through Arthur’s hair in slow, careful strokes, and his shoulders loosen under the blanket.

Arthur

Arthur

He melts a little at the touch, eyes closing as if he has been holding his breath for years.

Arthur turns his face farther into her shoulder, one hand flattening over her forearm like he is checking that she is still real.

Arthur

Arthur

You always make it feel safe to come back to you.

The words land softly between them. Abby’s fingers keep moving, brushing over a stray lock and smoothing it back into place.

Arthur

Arthur

I used to imagine this, you know. Not the exact couch. Just you here, and me not being scared to ask for more.

His thumb traces a small, absent circle against her sleeve. The studio stays hushed, but the air feels warmer now, fuller.

Arthur

Arthur

Stay with me like this a little longer?

I yawn and close my eyes, telling him ill be here all night

SUCCESS (Superb Willpower, rolled -2)

Abby lets out a long yawn against Arthur’s hair, then settles her cheek more fully against him. Her eyelids droop as she murmurs that she will be here all night.

Arthur

Arthur

Arthur gives a quiet, shaky laugh, his hand tightening once at her sleeve. Then I get to stop pretending I am alone in here.

He exhales into her shoulder and goes still, the tension in his back finally loosening. The blanket slips lower on one side as his fingers relax.

Arthur

Arthur

He closes his eyes, relief softening his face. She is really staying.

Abby’s yawn steals the last of her polish, and her shoulders sag with the honest weight of a long day. The studio’s lamp glows warm over the couch, and the room feels smaller, safer.

Arthur

Arthur

Stay as long as you want, Abby. I mean that.

Arthur nudges closer, not asking for more, just making room. Between them, the quiet turns easy, the kind that does not need defending.

I kiss Arthur goodnight before slowly drifting off to sleep

SUCCESS (Superb Health, rolled +1)

Abby tips her face up and kisses Arthur goodnight, slow and certain.

Arthur

Arthur

Arthur’s breath catches, then eases, like he has been waiting for this all evening.

His hand slides to her waist, careful and warm, holding her there for one quiet heartbeat before he lets the moment soften.

Arthur

Arthur

Goodnight, Abby.

The kiss ends, and Abby’s head sinks back into the couch cushion. Her eyes flutter shut while Arthur stays close enough to feel her breathing slow.

Arthur

Arthur

You can sleep. I am right here.

The studio falls into an even quieter hush, warm light resting over their joined shape as Abby drifts off against him, safe and unhurried.
