Cold mist clings to the small boat as Frederick steps onto the creaking deck. His royal blue coat darkens with sea damp, and the North Sea heaves below like a living wall.

Ahead, a foreign warrior plants his feet wide, blade half-drawn, his stare fixed and murderous. He does not waste breath on greeting.

The Foreign Warrior

The Foreign Warrior

Your life pays for my father’s blood.

Steel flashes from the cabin shadow behind him. Another presence shifts there, patient and hidden, waiting for the first mistake.

Frederick

Frederick

The deck is narrow. Two blades, maybe more.

The foreign warrior snaps his sword free in one sharp motion, shoulders braced for the lunge. The boat groans under the strain, every board trembling with the sea.

The Foreign Warrior

The Foreign Warrior

Step forward, or die where you stand.

From the cabin, the hidden enemy lets out a quiet, satisfied breath, as if the trap has already closed. The mist swallows the rest of the deck, leaving only the blade tips and the choice in front of Frederick.

✓ Quest Accepted

Escape the ambush on the boat deck

I kick the deck boards hard to destabilize the warrior's footing. I run to the highground, kicking a barrel to the lower deck

Frederick stamps the slick planks and the deck shudders under the foreign warrior’s boots. The man’s stance breaks for a heartbeat, weight skidding sideways in the mist.

At the same time, Frederick darts for the raised stern section, light on his feet, one hand flicking a loose barrel toward the lower deck. It slams and rolls away with a hollow thud.

The foreign warrior recovers too late, forced to adjust as the wet boards steal his balance. He has to choose between pursuit and footing.

Frederick gains the higher plankwork, where the rail and a winch post give him cleaner footing than the open middle of the deck.

The Foreign Warrior

The Foreign Warrior

Cowardly trick.

From the cabin shadow, the hidden enemy shifts at last, alerted by the racket. Their waiting stillness ends, and the dark mouth of the doorway becomes a second threat.

Below Frederick, the warrior steadies himself and turns up toward the new height, blade angled to cut off the easy route back.

*Kite them, let him frustrate into a mistake

Frederick gives ground by inches, not panic. The foreign warrior lunges where he was, and steel bites only spray from the wet rail.

Frederick turns the blade aside and slips his weight back, making the higher planks look wider than they are. The attack keeps reaching, but not reaching him.

The Foreign Warrior

The Foreign Warrior

Stand still, coward.

He surges after the insult, overcommitting toward the stern step. His front foot skids on the sheen of seawater, and his guard opens for a heartbeat.

Frederick

Frederick

The boards favor him only until they do not.

Frederick does not chase the opening. He lets it pass, retreats half a pace, and the warrior’s blade cuts air where Frederick was standing.

Maren

Maren

Now, corner him!

The shout from the doorway comes too late. The foreign warrior has already lunged past balance, and Frederick’s safe angle is suddenly clear, sternward and open.

*kick him in the face, he won't expect it, your height advantage and the element of surprise scream to your instincts: KICK*

Frederick snaps forward with a short, brutal kick. His boot catches the foreign warrior square in the face and jerks him back off line.

The man stumbles, arms flaring wide, and his blade dips toward the boards. A wet crack of impact carries over the deck.

Frederick’s foot lands wrong on the slick plank, and a sting runs through his ankle as the kick carries him half a step past his balance.

The Foreign Warrior

The Foreign Warrior

You...!

The shout from the doorway tightens into urgency, but the gap is already there, sternward and open.

Mist whips across the rail as the boat rocks, and the foreign warrior reels with one hand at his face, unable to press forward for a beat.

Frederick stands with the route to safety at his back, while both enemies recover in different directions.

*Keep going, maybe I can flip the tables, metaphorically speaking

Frederick takes the opening and glides for the stern rail, his bad footing forgotten in a burst of clean balance.

The foreign warrior lunges late, but Frederick is already past the line of attack, sword angled to keep him honest.

Wind and spray hit the deck like thrown sand. The open stern route yawns behind Frederick, clear and immediate.

The Foreign Warrior

The Foreign Warrior

Coward!

The hidden enemy shifts in the doorway, realizing the trap has lost its shape.

For a breath, the ambush is no longer a cage. Frederick stands at the threshold out of their reach, while they must choose whether to chase or hold the deck.

*Jump over him, attack from behind

Frederick springs up and over the foreign warrior, the leap neat despite the slick boards.

His blade flashes down as he passes, catching the man from behind and driving him to twist hard to recover.

The Foreign Warrior

The Foreign Warrior

Coward!

The warrior stumbles forward, suddenly facing the wrong way, while Frederick lands light beyond him.

The hidden enemy freezes at the cabin doorway, their planned pincer broken by the turn.

For a breath, the stern rail and the open water are both behind Frederick, and the trap has to remake itself.

Is that all you have to say?! *Counter style now, more settled, traditional, nah, pocket sand in the eyes*

FAILURE (Good Hand-to-Hand Combat, rolled -2)

Frederick snaps a hand low and flings a pinch of grit toward the foreign warrior’s face. The boards are too wet, the wind too sharp. The grains scatter wide and vanish into spray.

The Foreign Warrior

The Foreign Warrior

Your tricks fail!

He surges in anyway, blade coming back up fast, no longer blinded, only angrier. The missed throw leaves Frederick’s lead hand empty and his timing exposed for a beat.

Maren

Maren

Drive him to the rail!

From the doorway, the hidden enemy finally commits, angling to cut off the stern side. Wind hisses across the deck, and the open water waits beyond the rail.

Frederick

Frederick

The deck is slicker than the throw.

Frederick now has less room behind him, with one attacker pressing front and the other closing the angle. The boat gives a hard roll, and the next move has to be real.

Frederick slips inside the foreign warrior’s next cut, blade meeting blade with a hard, clean jolt. The impact turns the man’s wrist and steals his line.

He pivots on the slick boards, shoulders low, and the answering riposte whistles past the attacker’s ribs, forcing him back a step.

The Foreign Warrior

The Foreign Warrior

No!

The hidden enemy halts at the doorway, startled by the sudden reversal. Their angle toward the stern collapses as Frederick’s blade now owns the center lane.

Frederick

Frederick

The line is mine.

A fresh roll of the boat throws spray over the rail. Frederick uses it, pressing both foes off balance and into each other’s space.

Maren

Maren

Move, now, before he breaks free!

But the stern path opens at last. Frederick has a clear route to safety, while the two attackers scramble to recover their footing.
