Ichi enters the crowded tavern beneath rain-darkened eaves, hunger tightening into a persistent ache. At the nearest table, a fresh meal steams untouched while gathered locals argue around it.

A broad-shouldered middle-aged dwarf woman in a green wool vest points toward the platter, her braided iron-gray beard beads clicking as she turns toward Ichi.

The Dwarf Woman

The Dwarf Woman

There. Another hungry soul. Whoever wants a portion must first answer for the missing purse.

The argument dies completely. Elves, humans, and a scaled lizardfolk patron shift aside, leaving the table and its fragrant stew exposed beneath the tavern’s amber lanterns.

The Dwarf Woman

The Dwarf Woman

No one leaves with a bite until we know whose hands took it, and where the purse was hidden.

A young elf man with a narrow face and silver cloak folds his arms, watching Ichi with open suspicion. Beside him, an empty chair bears a dark smear of spilled wine.

The Elf Man

The Elf Man

He was not here when the purse vanished. Perhaps that is why he arrived now.

✓ Quest Accepted

Clear my name over the missing purse

“"I just arived in this Kingdom looking for a bite to eat and maybe some quest" I say”

FAILURE (Mediocre Reasoning, rolled -1)

Ichi Sorenashi

Ichi Sorenashi

I just arrived in this kingdom. I am looking for a bite to eat, and perhaps some work.

Ichi’s quiet words settle over the table, but the promised welcome never comes. The stew’s fragrant steam continues to curl between wary faces.

The Dwarf Woman

The Dwarf Woman

Then you arrived at an unfortunate hour. Food is not charity while a purse is missing, and work is scarce for suspected thieves.

The Elf Man

The Elf Man

Convenient, is it not? A newcomer hungry enough to steal, yet eager enough to call himself a laborer.

The lizardfolk patron slides his chair away from Ichi, claws scraping softly across the floor. Several hands drift toward belts and cloak folds, guarding valuables.

The Dwarf Woman

The Dwarf Woman

You will not be served, and no quest will be offered here, until this matter is settled. Start by telling us where you came from.

The Elf Man

The Elf Man

If he truly wants work, he can begin by explaining why he entered at the exact wrong moment.

✓ Quest Accepted

Keep the cellar threat from emerging

Before anyone can demand another answer, every flame in the tavern gutters blue. The untouched stew shudders, and a thin ring of frost spreads across the table.

The Lizardfolk Patron

The Lizardfolk Patron

That is no common haunting. Something beneath this house has awakened.

The dark wine smear beside the empty chair pulls itself into a trembling line, creeping toward the room’s shuttered cellar door against the slope of the wood.

The Elf Man

The Elf Man

The purse was there. I saw its shadow vanish beneath that chair, before this stranger entered.

The Dwarf Woman

The Dwarf Woman

Everyone back from the cellar. No one touches that door until I know what is calling from below.

A dull knock answers from beneath the floor, followed by two more. The tavern’s iron latch lifts by itself, though the door remains shut.

The Dwarf Woman

The Dwarf Woman

Newcomer, you wanted work? If you have the nerve for it, watch that door while I fetch the keys.

− Scene Quest Removed

Clear my name over the missing purse

“*I draw my dagger and stand by the door*”

SUCCESS (Superb Agility, rolled +1)

Ichi draws his dagger, its narrow blade catching the dying blue light, and takes position beside the shuttered cellar door. The lifted latch trembles inches from his shoulder.

The Dwarf Woman

The Dwarf Woman

Good. Keep your eyes on that door, and do not let whatever waits below draw you into foolishness.

The dwarf woman hurries behind the bar, searching beneath stacked cups and ledgers for the cellar keys. Around the table, patrons retreat toward the walls.

The Elf Man

The Elf Man

A dagger will not make him trustworthy. If the thing below reaches through, he may be the first to welcome it.

The Lizardfolk Patron

The Lizardfolk Patron

The frost follows the vanished purse, not the stranger. The distinction may matter.

Another knock sounds beneath the boards, heavier than before. Frost gathers along the door’s seams while the iron latch settles slowly back into place.

The Dwarf Woman

The Dwarf Woman

I have the keys. Hold your ground, newcomer. We open the door together, and we learn what stole that purse.

Ichi steps onto the cellar hatch, planting both feet over its iron-bound boards as the tavern’s blue light gutters around him.

For one breath, the hatch holds. Then something below presses upward with slow, crushing force, driving frost through the soles of his boots.

The Dwarf Woman

The Dwarf Woman

Off it, newcomer! The boards are not resisting it. They are being lifted.

The hatch rises beneath Ichi despite his weight, throwing him sideways onto the floorboards. The iron latch tears free and skitters beneath the nearest table.

The Lizardfolk Patron

The Lizardfolk Patron

The barrier is broken. Whatever called from below has a path now.

The Elf Man

The Elf Man

And the stranger was standing over it when it opened. Perhaps the cellar has chosen its keeper.

The dwarf woman reaches the warped opening with keys clenched in one fist. Cold mist spills around her boots, revealing a narrow stair descending into darkness.

“*i look at the elf man* Can you stop being so stupid, Why are you trying to blame me constantly anyway?”

SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +1)

Ichi Sorenashi

Ichi Sorenashi

Can you stop being so stupid? Why are you trying to blame me constantly anyway?

Ichi fixes the elf man with a steady look from the cellar floor. The accusation hangs sharper than the blue cold spilling up the stairs.

The Elf Man

The Elf Man

Because you arrived when the purse vanished, and every strange thing since then has favored your shadow. Suspicion is not stupidity.

The elf man’s confidence falters beneath Ichi’s direct challenge. He glances toward the open hatch, then lowers his folded arms.

The Elf Man

The Elf Man

But you are right about one thing. I have no proof that you caused this. I should have said that plainly.

The Dwarf Woman

The Dwarf Woman

Good. Then stop circling each other with accusations. The cellar is open, the purse is below, and answers wait in the dark.

From beneath the tavern comes a faint metallic chime, followed by a whisper of movement on the narrow stairs. The dwarf woman raises her key ring.

“*I grab my dagger and hop in the cellar*”

Ichi snatches up his dagger from the floorboards and springs through the open hatch, landing lightly on the narrow cellar stairs.

Cold mist coils around his boots as he descends into the cramped darkness. The metallic chime sounds again below, clearer now, like a purse clasp striking stone.

The Dwarf Woman

The Dwarf Woman

Wait for no one, do you? Keep that blade ready, and look for the purse before you touch anything else.

The dwarf woman plants herself at the hatch, key ring clenched in hand. Behind her, wary patrons crowd together while blue light spills down the steps.

The Lizardfolk Patron

The Lizardfolk Patron

The cold deepens below. Whatever opened the way may be guarding what was stolen.

The Elf Man

The Elf Man

He entered without hesitation. If he finds the purse, then perhaps my suspicion has finally earned an answer.

At the foot of the stairs, a faint silver glint rests beside a cracked stone pillar. Beyond it, darkness gathers around a shallow underground passage.

“*I look for the purse*”

SUCCESS (Great Perception, rolled -2)

The Missing Purse Accusation

The Dwarf Woman

Ichi searches beside the cracked pillar, tracing the silver glint through dust and frost. His fingers find the stolen purse wedged beneath a loose stone.

As he pulls it free, the stone drops with a sharp crack, echoing through the passage. The purse’s clasp is cold enough to numb his fingertips.

The Dwarf Woman

The Dwarf Woman

You found it. Bring it up carefully, and do not open the purse down there.

The purse hangs heavy in Ichi’s grip, its leather damp with cellar chill. A faint blue sheen clings to the clasp, while the passage remains silent.

The Elf Man

The Elf Man

That is the missing purse. He has it in plain sight, and the cellar has not swallowed him.

The Lizardfolk Patron

The Lizardfolk Patron

The noise was costly. Something below heard the stone fall, though it has not answered yet.

Above, the tavern holds its breath. Frost creeps across the stair’s lowest step as the dwarf woman extends one hand toward the recovered purse.

Ichi climbs the narrow stairs with the purse held firmly in one hand. Frost bites through his boots and numbs the fingers wrapped around its cold clasp.

His ascent makes the old steps groan loudly beneath him, sending a hollow echo down the passage. The blue sheen on the purse flickers but does not release it.

The Dwarf Woman

The Dwarf Woman

Easy now. Keep it closed, and give it here.

Ichi reaches the hatch and extends the recovered purse. The dwarf woman takes it from his hand, her thick fingers closing around the damp leather.

The Dwarf Woman

The Dwarf Woman

The purse is returned. You have done what you were asked, newcomer.

The Elf Man

The Elf Man

Then he was not the thief. I owe him more than suspicion, and I will say so plainly.

The cellar falls silent again, but the echo fades slowly below. Frost remains on Ichi’s boots, and his numbed fingers sting as warmth begins returning.

Ichi Sorenashi

There you go. I got your purse back safe and sound. You're welcome.

The words have barely left Ichi’s mouth when the purse jerks in the dwarf woman’s grasp. Its blue clasp splits open, spilling coins across the floor and revealing a thin silver key beneath them.

The Dwarf Woman

The Dwarf Woman

Safe and sound? A purse that opens itself is neither. Stand back, newcomer.

The silver key bears the same angular markings as the cracked pillar below. As it strikes the boards, frost withdraws from one narrow seam in the cellar wall.

The Elf Man

The Elf Man

That key was not in the purse when it vanished. The cellar must have placed it there.

The Lizardfolk Patron

The Lizardfolk Patron

Then the stolen purse was bait, and the key is an invitation. The hidden seam offers the next answer.

The Dwarf Woman

The Dwarf Woman

You returned what was stolen, and uncovered what was concealed. The choice is yours, but do not call this matter finished.

That is not my problem. I did what was asked, got a bite to eat, and now I am leaving for my quest.

Ichi turns from the cellar hatch, leaving the silver key and the wary table behind. He crosses the tavern toward the rain-darkened door, dagger secured at his side.

The Dwarf Woman

The Dwarf Woman

Fair enough, newcomer. You returned the purse and earned your meal. The key can wait for someone who wants its trouble.

The dwarf woman gathers the scattered coins while the elf man steps aside. No hand reaches for Ichi, and no accusation follows him across the room.

The Elf Man

The Elf Man

You have my apology, Ichi Sorenashi. May your quest prove less troublesome than this tavern.

Ichi pushes open the tavern door and passes beneath the rain-darkened eaves. Wet road, gray sky, and the open kingdom wait beyond the threshold.

The Lizardfolk Patron

The Lizardfolk Patron

Walk carefully, wanderer. Some invitations remain open long after their guests depart.
