Magical Chaos at the Tavern

The city gate of Valedorn looms ahead, black stone slick with evening mist. Just beyond it, a tavern sign swings over a crowded doorway, and a crash of ale, splintered wood, and startled shouting spills into the road.

Walksfar Seesmuch reaches the threshold in time to see a hooded spellcaster shove back from a table, one hand sparking with pale blue light. A burly man in a gate-keeper's tabard slams into a bench, more angry than hurt, while tankards skid across the floor.

The Hooded Figure

The Hooded Figure

Stand aside. I will not be cowed by a drunkard and his friends.

The crowd recoils, but the magic in the room wavers sideways instead of obeying. Lamps gutter green. A rune of light crawls across the ceiling and then snaps free, showering the rafters with harmless sparks.

The spellwork is slipping.

At the far end of the room, a red-faced nobleman in travel-stained silk points a trembling finger at the hooded figure. He looks less like a fighter than a man trying very hard not to be recognized.

The Red-Faced Nobleman

The Red-Faced Nobleman

Enough, all of you. If anyone here has sense, help me contain this before the gate watch arrives.

Outside, bootsteps ring on the stone yard. Inside, the hooded figure lifts both hands, and the blue glow gathers again, unstable and dangerous, as every eye turns toward Walksfar Seesmuch.

The Red-Faced Nobleman

By the saints, yes, take it. Hide it. Just keep the watch from seeing that crest.

The gatekeeper barrels a step forward, then catches sight of the empty floor where the case was and hesitates, snorting in frustration instead of shouting.

Burly Gate-keeper

Burly Gate-keeper

You there, princess, if that thing reaches the city guard, we are all finished.

A hiss of unstable magic spits from the rafters. Green flame gutters hard, and the hooded spellcaster turns their masked face toward Walksfar, energy gathering around their hands.

She reaches a narrow stone alcove beside a shuttered spice stall, just deep enough to break her outline. From there, she can watch the tavern door without being seen, the green flare from inside strobing across the cobbles.

The Red-Faced Nobleman
