Creighton enters the northern warlord’s hall beneath soot-dark banners. Below, an elderly man in black furs, a tall, heavyset man with a scarred face and an iron-gray beard, watches from his carved throne while the court crowds the stone arena.

At the gate, two mailed guards restrain a young adult woman in a torn crimson gown, a slim young woman with tangled black hair and a bruised oval face. Iron chains bind her wrists, and a third guard keeps one hand on the lock.

The scholar steps into the arena: a gaunt middle-aged man with ash-pale skin, long white hair, and layered gray robes stitched with forbidden sigils. His eyes shine like banked coals.

The Scholar

The Scholar

I am Veyr Ashmantle. Let the old laws witness this.

Opposite him, a broad young man in lacquered red armor raises a hooked blade. A scar divides his close-shaven scalp, and his smile shows no warmth.

The Opposing Champion

The Opposing Champion

Scholar, your blood will purchase her freedom.

The guards tighten their hold on the concubine. The warlord lifts two fingers, and every whisper dies; only the blade’s metal hook scrapes against the arena floor.

Director's notewhole tale

I am unsure what my role is here. This seems to be a face-off between the Scholar and the Opposing Champion. Where do I fit in to the scenario?

The warlord’s gaze shifts from the arena to Creighton. The guards, the court, and both champions remain fixed in place, making his separation from the contest unmistakable.

The Northern Warlord

The Northern Warlord

You are not entered in this blood-right, stranger. You stand as witness, unless you choose to claim a place in it.

The Opposing Champion

The Opposing Champion

Let him watch. Another blade will not change the ending.

The opposing champion angles his hooked weapon toward Veyr, leaving the path between Creighton and the arena open. At the gate, the guards keep the chained concubine chained but no longer drag her forward.

The Scholar

The Scholar

Witnesses are useful only when they understand what they see. The standard is not a prize. It is a summons.

Mira Seln

Mira Seln

Do not let their ceremony fool you. Whoever wins, the borderlands will pay.

The Northern Warlord

The Northern Warlord

Remain beyond the circle, intervene for neither side, or enter it and become the third claimant. Choose with your own hands.

“"I will fight for neither side, but that of the woman's" I declare boldly. "Who can provide me with a weapon?"”

I will fight for neither side, but for the woman's cause. Who can provide me with a weapon?

Creighton’s declaration cuts across the silent arena. The warlord studies him, then turns toward the gate, where the chained woman lifts her bruised face.

The Northern Warlord

The Northern Warlord

Give him steel. If he claims her cause, let the circle judge whether his courage has weight.

The gate guard unhooks a straight sword from the weapon rack and crosses the arena. He offers it hilt-first, its worn leather grip dark with old use.

Mira Seln

Mira Seln

Then stand beside me, stranger. Do not stand between us and the blade.

The Scholar

The Scholar

A third claimant changes the rite. Good. Let the old laws decide whose hand the standard will summon.

The sword settles into Creighton’s grasp. The opposing champion shifts his hooked blade toward the widening circle, while Veyr watches him with ember-bright eyes.

What are the terms? Fight until our opponent yields?

Creighton sets his feet within the marked circle, sword held low but ready. The opposing champion faces him across the stone, while Veyr remains between them and the chained woman.

The Northern Warlord

The Northern Warlord

Until yield, disarmament, or death. You are not their ally, stranger. You are the third claimant, standing for her cause.

Mira Seln

Mira Seln

My cause is freedom. Make them yield, and the chains come off. Let neither man claim me as spoil.

The Scholar

The Scholar

The terms bind all three claimants. The victor names what the standard summons, but her freedom is the price of this contest.

The Opposing Champion

The Opposing Champion

Then come, third claimant. Break my guard, and I will yield. Fail, and your cause falls beneath my blade.

The warlord lowers his hand. The guards draw the chained woman beyond the circle, and the court falls silent as the opposing champion advances, hooked blade raised.

“I look for weaknesses and vulnerabilities in both of my opponents.”

SUCCESS (Legendary Perception, rolled +2)

Creighton studies the circle instead of its noise. The opposing champion’s forward heel bears too much weight, and his hooked blade leaves his ribs open whenever he reaches across his body.

Creighton Burrell

Creighton Burrell

Korran commits his balance to the hook; Veyr commits his attention to the sigils.

Veyr’s danger is different. His stance is narrow, his hands remain poised over the stitched signs, and his ember-bright gaze tracks the arena more than either weapon. Interrupting his focus should matter.

The Opposing Champion

The Opposing Champion

Staring will not save her, third claimant. Choose which of us you fear first.

The assessment settles into clear choices: draw Korran into a wide committed sweep, or force Veyr to abandon the sigils and defend himself. Neither man knows how much Creighton has seen.

The Scholar

The Scholar

Do not mistake stillness for weakness, stranger. The old laws punish careless hands.

Korran advances into measure, hook lifted. Veyr holds behind him, preserving the sigil-work. The vulnerabilities remain plainly exposed to Creighton’s legendary eye.

“I feign advances at Korran, then Veyr, each in turn, but make no effort to engage either of them. My goal is to escalate the tension into action, while potentially letting my two opponents battle it out between themselves, waiting for an opening to strike. "Magic poses the greatest threat to both of us," I suggest to Korran. "Let's work together to bring this down to an honorable contest of the blade."”

Creighton darts toward Korran, sword flashing just inside the hook’s reach, then withdraws before steel can meet. Korran’s guard snaps after the feint.

He pivots and threatens Veyr with the same empty advance. The scholar’s hands twitch over his sigils, and his ember-bright gaze finally fixes on Creighton instead of the arena.

Creighton Burrell

Creighton Burrell

Magic poses the greatest threat to both of us. Let’s work together to bring this down to an honorable contest of the blade.

The Opposing Champion

The Opposing Champion

A blade-bound bargain, then. We break the scholar’s working first, and afterward I face you without tricks.

Korran wheels on Veyr and lunges, hook sweeping hard enough to force the scholar from his narrow stance. The sigils flare once, then dim as Veyr abandons them.

The Scholar

The Scholar

You mistake cooperation for wisdom. The old laws permit your treachery, but they will remember it.

The opening arrives, but Creighton’s attention has been pulled across both threats; Veyr’s interrupted pattern leaves its next consequence uncertain. Korran’s attack has nonetheless cleared the scholar’s guard.

“Taking advantage of the distraction I roll behind Veyr and plunge my blade into his back, striking at vital organs.”

SUCCESS (Mediocre Melee Weapons, rolled +0)

Creighton slips behind Veyr while the scholar’s sigils gutter. His straight sword drives into Veyr’s back, and the robed man folds soundlessly onto the stone.

The impact jars Creighton’s shoulder and wrenches his grip. His boots skid across the marked circle, but the blade remains his as Veyr lies still.

The Opposing Champion

The Opposing Champion

You promised an honorable contest of the blade. You gave him treachery instead.

Korran tears his hook free from the empty air and turns on Creighton. Across the arena, the guards halt the chained concubine, while the court erupts in frightened whispers.

The Northern Warlord

The Northern Warlord

The scholar is fallen. The third claimant stands. Let the circle judge what he has purchased.

The Opposing Champion

The Opposing Champion

Then face me alone, third claimant. Yield now, or finish what you began.

Mira Seln

Mira Seln

Do not yield. If the circle is honest, make it honor the bargain.

“"I promised you a fair contest of the blade, after disposing of him," I respond, pointing down at the defeated mage. I circle Korran cautiously, waiting for an opportunity to draw Korran into a wide committed sweep, exposing his ribs. Before I make my move, I offer Korran an honorable way out: "Is the reward for winning this contest of arms worth the risk of losing your life to a seasoned soldier?" I question. "Your forward heel bears too much weight, and my senses tell me you are not a seasoned combatant. It is more honorable for you to yeild and live, than for me to cut you down senselessly."”

Creighton points down at the unconscious scholar, then circles Korran with measured steps. His sword stays ready, while Korran’s weighted heel and exposed ribs remain plainly visible.

Creighton Burrell

Creighton Burrell

Is the reward for winning this contest of arms worth the risk of losing your life to a seasoned soldier? Your forward heel bears too much weight. Yield and live, rather than let me cut you down senselessly.

The challenge costs Creighton a breath of composure; his sword hand pauses for one unmistakable instant. Korran sees it, but the opening he expected never comes.

The Opposing Champion

The Opposing Champion

You make the offer plainly, soldier. I accept. I yield the contest of arms.

Korran lowers the hooked blade and steps back from the circle’s center. The court’s whispers collapse into silence, and the guards keep the chained concubine beyond the marked stones.

The Northern Warlord

The Northern Warlord

The opposing champion has yielded. By the old laws, the third claimant has won this contest and stands for her freedom.

“"My Lord," I bow to the warlord, "you are known as a man of honor, and of your word. I claim the prize you offered for victory, and offer the woman her freedom."”

My lord, you are known as a man of honor, and of your word. I claim the prize offered for victory, and offer the woman her freedom.

The warlord rises from his throne. His gaze passes over the fallen scholar, the yielded champion, and the sword in Creighton’s hand before settling on the chained woman.

The Northern Warlord

The Northern Warlord

The old laws witnessed your victory, and my word binds me. Mira Seln is free. Unchain her.

The gate guard unlocks the woman’s wrists and removes the chains. She steps clear of them, rubbing the reddened marks, while the court absorbs the judgment in uneasy silence.

Mira Seln

Mira Seln

I accept the freedom you won, Creighton Burrell. But the standard’s summons remains, and the law says nothing about who must answer it.

The Northern Warlord

The Northern Warlord

That is the cost of your victory, stranger. You have freed her, but you have also placed yourself before the summons. The court will hear your claim before nightfall.
