Night settles over the crooked street as Cassian arrives beneath a crumbling shrine, its weathered idol watching through a veil of ivy and soot.
A heavyset middle-aged merchant in a wine-red coat crouches beside a low stall. His shaved crown, gray beard, and gold tooth catch the lanternlight as he guards a black-wrapped bundle.

the merchant
There. The coins, as promised. More than fair for something so small.
The merchant offers a noticeably generous purse, yet keeps the smallest parcel tucked against his ribs. Nearby dogs whine toward an empty patch of darkness.

the merchant
You wanted the whole lot. Take the blades, the rings, the trinkets. Leave that one alone unless you know what you are buying.

Cassian
The dogs are watching nothing I can see.

the merchant
Well? Take the money and goods, or name your price. Dawn is too near, and I have no wish to bargain with what comes after it.

Keep the merchant safe
“"Fine, I’ll meet you next moon with another batch. Remember, I was never here."”
SUCCESS (Legendary Bargain, rolled -3)

Cassian
Fine. I’ll meet you next moon with another batch. Remember, I was never here.
The merchant studies Cassian beneath the shrine’s cracked idol, then closes his fist around the purse and nods. The bargain settles into the night.

the merchant
Next moon, then. I heard nothing, saw nothing, and your name never crossed my stall.
He passes over the promised coins and trinkets, but keeps the black-wrapped parcel pressed beneath his arm. A smear of pale ash marks Cassian’s sleeve where the purse changes hands.

the merchant
That ash is a courtesy, not a chain. It tells me if someone else handles the goods before our meeting.
The dogs fall silent. The merchant folds the stall cloth around what remains, while the shrine’s ivy stirs without wind and the alley opens darkly beyond.

“Cassian leaves, climbing up a building and going from roof to roof, a route he’s familiar with, but risky since authorities are familiar with him.”
FAILURE (Good Agility, rolled +0)

Cassian slips into the alley’s shadow, catches the first drainpipe, and climbs toward the familiar line of rooftops above the crooked street.
He crosses the first ridge cleanly, colorful charms whispering against his coat. Beyond it, moonlight reveals fresh limewash across several tiles, an authority’s recent repair.

Cassian
Those tiles were not here last night.
His weight finds the repaired section. A tile shears loose, and the roof pitches him sideways; he catches a gutter as fragments clatter into the alley.
The gutter tears from its brackets. Cassian drops onto a narrow wooden awning below, which sags but holds, leaving the rooftop route exposed and unsafe.
From the awning he sees a low dormer beneath the next building’s eaves. Its warped door hangs ajar, opening into darkness and a possible way through.
Behind him, broken tiles glitter along the familiar route, a conspicuous trail for any watchman inspecting the noise. The dormer remains still.
“Cassian keeps going, swiping small trinkets on balcony’s and off tables”
SUCCESS (Good Thievery, rolled +1)

Cassian slips through the dormer and emerges onto the next roof, moving from balcony to balcony where moonlit tables hold cups, dice, and cheap charms.
His fingers gather a brass saint, a bone token, and a little green stone from three separate ledges. Each theft leaves the sleeping households poorer by something small.

Cassian
The green stone is warm.
At the fourth balcony, his sleeve catches on a nail. The cloth tears with a sharp rip, and a silver spoon skips across the boards.
A shutter bangs open below. Someone mutters in alarm, but Cassian is already across the parapet, pocketing the spoon and two painted beads from an unattended table.
He continues along the rooftops, charms and trinkets secured beneath his coat, while a sleepy voice calls for a lamp behind him.

Cassian leaves Crooked Street Rooftops behind and arrives at his humble house on the outside.
“It takes a few more close calls and a few more items accompanied by the voice of a sleepy night watch to get Cassian to head back to his abode, a humble house on the outside”
SUCCESS (Good Agility, rolled +1)

Cassian reaches his humble house beyond the outer ditch, a crooked stone-and-thatch shelter crouched among thornbushes and wind-bent weeds. Dawn pales the eastern sky.
Behind him, the sleepy night watchman's call dwindles along the road, answered by no alarm. The stolen trinkets sit secure beneath Cassian's torn, colorful coat.
His door opens beneath a careful hand. Inside, the single room smells of ashes, old herbs, and rain-soaked timber; a cold hearth waits beneath blackened rafters.

Cassian
The green stone is warmer now.
When Cassian sets the gathered objects on his rough table, the brass saint turns toward the green stone without being touched. Its tiny face bears fresh red lettering.
The lettering fades almost at once, leaving behind a narrow mark like a keyhole. Beneath the stone, Cassian finds a folded scrap hidden among the painted beads.
The scrap shows a crude map of the outer wall and a single circled spot beneath the abandoned aqueduct. His haul is safely home, and something valuable may lie waiting nearby.
“Cassian starts altering the stolen goods, along with the few items he already had from previous nights, small bits of painting, a small nick in the wood, an extra bend in things, nothing to ruin it, but enough that no one can claim it was originally theirs.”
SUCCESS (Good Thievery, rolled +2)
Cassian works beside the cold hearth, arranging the stolen trinkets with the few older possessions already scattered across his rough table.
A dab of faded blue paint changes the brass saint's worn hem; a careful nick breaks the clean edge of a wooden charm without weakening it.
He bends one little ring a finger's width, twists a painted bead, and scratches a shallow line beneath the bone token. Each alteration is slight, deliberate, and permanent.

Cassian
The old marks no longer match the new ones.
The goods now carry Cassian's quiet signature: uneven paint, altered angles, and tiny imperfections that make a former owner’s certainty difficult to prove.
When he lifts the green stone to examine its warmth, the brass saint tilts toward it again. The keyhole mark beneath the stone darkens, pointing toward the folded map.
Outside, wind combs the thornbushes as dawn brightens the ditch road. Beneath the abandoned aqueduct, the circled place now feels less like a rumor and more like an appointment.
