The Condemned Guard

The ruined shrine crouches beneath a gray sky, its altar split and roofless. A broad-shouldered middle-aged guard in a dust-stained green surcoat hangs from the weathered stone arch, boots scraping as the knot holds. Caravaners and armed travelers ring the scaffold.

A lean young adult man steps from the armed travelers. His sun-browned face is framed by cropped blond hair, and a red scarf marks his patched leather coat. He points sharply toward Daniel.

Tomas Rell

Tomas Rell

You there, cloaked one! Prove whether this guard is guilty, or whether we are silencing an innocent man. I am Tomas Rell, and I saw the evidence.

The Condemned Guard

The Condemned Guard

Do not trust him! I served this caravan through three borderlands. They want a spy because their own camp was robbed.

The condemned guard twists against the rope, breath ragged but voice steady. Below him, several caravaners mutter prayers while armed travelers keep hands near their blades.

Tomas Rell

Tomas Rell

His seal was found inside the stolen ledger. Search him, search his pack, search the shrine stones. The truth is waiting somewhere.

Wind moves through the broken shrine, stirring ash around Daniel's boots. Every face turns toward him, leaving the rope, the witness, and the gathered caravan waiting for his judgment.

Everyone stop! Let us have a proper trial and investigation. That is his right as a sentient being.

Daniel's command cuts through the prayers. The caravaners fall silent, and the armed travelers halt with hands on their weapons, but no one yet releases the rope.

Tomas Rell

Tomas Rell

A trial requires lawful authority. We have none here, only a stolen ledger and a rope. I will allow an investigation, but not a pardon.

The Condemned Guard

The Condemned Guard

Then search the seal first. I carried the caravan's true seal for three years. That one was pressed recently.

The nearest armed traveler lowers his blade and cuts the rope short enough for the guard to stand. The condemned guard's boots touch ash, though the noose remains around his neck.

Tomas Rell

Tomas Rell

Very well. The seal, the ledger, and the shrine stones will be examined before anyone passes sentence.

A crack opens in the mob's certainty: the wax seal on the ledger is visibly bright and unweathered, unlike the faded mark stitched onto the condemned guard's surcoat.

“*I began searching and checking everything I could*”

Daniel searches the ledger first, testing its fresh wax, scraping a fingernail along the seal's edge, then comparing its impression with the faded mark on the condemned guard's surcoat.

The seal is counterfeit. Its wax contains pale grit from the shrine floor, and a hairline ridge shows it was pressed over an older impression rather than stamped cleanly.

The Condemned Guard

The Condemned Guard

There. I told you it was recent. The true seal has a crescent cut through the lower rim.

Daniel checks the shrine stones and finds matching red wax dust in a narrow crack beneath the altar. Inside rests a broken signet mold, wrapped in cloth and hidden from casual sight.

Tomas Rell

Tomas Rell

That proves someone forged it here, not who carried it into the ledger.

The examination takes long enough for the wind to shift and ash to veil several footprints. Daniel identifies the mold and false seal, but the trail beyond the shrine is no longer reliable.

The Condemned Guard

The Condemned Guard

Then keep looking. A forged seal clears me of that evidence, but the stolen ledger still has to be found.

The rope remains loose around the condemned guard's neck, while the caravaners and armed travelers stare at the broken mold, their certainty replaced by wary attention.

“First let this man down and secure the area, no one should be let in or out. Anyone here could be the real suspect!”

Daniel’s presence hardens into a command. The nearest Armed Travelers, two young adult human men in dark leather coats and dust-stained boots, unfasten the rope, lower the condemned guard carefully, and remove the noose while Caravaners draw back from the shrine, a mixed group of adult men and women in layered, dust-muted travel clothes,.

The Condemned Guard

The Condemned Guard

I can stand. Keep me here, but do not bind me like a criminal until the evidence says otherwise.

The condemned guard’s boots settle on ash. Armed Travelers take positions at the broken arch and shrine path, while Caravaners seal the opposite approach beneath the watchful sky.

Armed Travelers

Armed Travelers

No one enters or leaves. Set down weapons where they can be seen, and keep your hands clear.

The order holds. A few Caravaners exchange offended glances, but every path is covered, and no one risks testing Daniel’s warning.

Tomas Rell

Tomas Rell

You have secured the scene, but you have also made every witness suspect. Remember who will answer for that insult if this search finds nothing.

The cost settles over the shrine: cooperation becomes wary obedience. Tomas remains, though his trust has plainly become leverage Daniel must now earn back.

Director's note

Daniel searched everywhere and inspected every forfeited weapons as well as all confiscated items.

Judgment Beneath the Broken Shrine

Daniel searches the shrine methodically, examining the altar crack, ledger, broken mold, discarded cloth, and every confiscated item. Nothing escapes his scrutiny, not even dirt caught in buckles.

He inspects each forfeited weapon in turn, weighing blades, checking hilts, and holding spearheads beneath the gray light. The weapons bear ordinary wear, with no red wax or shrine grit hidden in their fittings.

The Condemned Guard

The Condemned Guard

My sword has been mine since the eastern crossing. Search it as closely as you wish. I would rather have certainty than another rope.

Daniel checks the condemned guard's sword, belt knife, scabbard, travel pack, and coat seams. He finds no hidden seal, forged document, stolen ledger, or residue linking the guard to the mold.

Tomas Rell

Tomas Rell

You searched everything, yet the ledger remains missing from the caravan's records. The false seal proves a forgery, not the thief's identity.

The confiscated packs, lanterns, tools, cloaks, and tied bundles yield only travel necessities. Beneath one caravaner's spare blanket, Daniel finds fresh gray dust matching the shrine floor, but no stolen ledger.

Armed Travelers

Armed Travelers

Nothing concealed has been found. The scene is secure, but the missing ledger must have left before the search began.

“I don't believe so, no one has left since I arrived. Check the Caravan!”

I don't believe so. No one has left since I arrived. Check the caravan.

Daniel turns from the guarded paths to the caravan's packs, chests, and bundled goods. He checks seams, false bottoms, rolled blankets, and every compartment the earlier search could have overlooked.

Caravaners

Caravaners

Those are our provisions and trade goods. Search them, then, but do not ruin what remains.

Behind a removable plank in a spice chest, Daniel finds the missing ledger wrapped in oiled cloth. Its pages are intact, and a smear of fresh gray shrine dust marks the covering.

Tomas Rell

Tomas Rell

There it is. Then the thief hid it among the caravan's own goods before the cordon closed.

The search consumes precious daylight, and the shifting wind erases the last useful footprints beyond the shrine. The ledger is recovered, but the trail to whoever planted it is now uncertain.

The Condemned Guard

The Condemned Guard

Now compare its entries with the seal. Perhaps the thief left more behind than dust.

“Separate everyone into two groups, the people who were here when the caravan arrived and the people who arrived when the commotion started! Then separate those people again two groups of people who have dusty clothing and those who dont.”

Daniel marks four spaces in the ash and sorts the witnesses by arrival first. The condemned guard and the Caravaners stand in the arrival group; Tomas and the Armed Travelers stand in the later group.

He divides each arrival group again by clothing. Dust-stained boots, hems, and sleeves place the condemned guard and the Caravaners together, while Tomas's cleaner red scarf and coat mark him apart among the later arrivals.

The Armed Travelers inspect one another under Daniel's scrutiny. Their dark coats and dust-stained boots place all three in the dusty section of those who arrived after the commotion began.

Tomas Rell

Tomas Rell

You are treating dust as a clock, not merely as dirt. That is sensible, but wind and waiting can make the distinction uncertain.

Armed Travelers

Armed Travelers

We arrived when the shouting started. We stayed on the shrine paths after that, and none of us crossed the caravan's goods.

The arrangement is complete: four visible divisions show who was present at arrival and who came later, with dusty and cleaner clothing marked within each. The careful comparison costs daylight, leaving the exact age of some dust uncertain.

“All the people who are in the group of dusty clothing and arrived first please submit yourself to a search and show us your hands and arms”

Those in the dusty clothing who arrived first, submit to a search and show us your hands and arms.

The condemned guard steps forward first, raising both hands. The Caravaners follow, sleeves rolled back, palms and forearms exposed beneath the gray daylight.

The Condemned Guard

You will find no stain on me. Search every inch you require.

Caravaner 2

Caravaner 2

We submit. Look closely, and you will see we carried only our own goods.

Daniel examines their hands, wrists, cuffs, and bare arms. The condemned guard is clean, as are five Caravaners, but the caravaner nearest the spice chest has fresh red wax beneath one cuff.

Caravaner 1

Caravaner 1

That is not mine. I scraped against the chest when you searched it.

The wax matches the counterfeit seal's bright color, and its edge bears a tiny crescent impression. Several witnesses recoil from the caravaner, while the Armed Travelers tighten their watch.

“Caravaner 1 how would that be possible unless you tampered with the wax? Admit your guilt!”

How would that be possible unless you tampered with the wax? Admit your guilt!

Daniel’s accusation lands with quiet force. The caravaner nearest the spice chest stiffens, while the Armed Travelers close ranks and the other Caravaners fall silent.

Caravaner 1

Caravaner 1

I... I pressed the false seal. The ledger was mine to hide, and I smeared the wax beneath my cuff when I moved it.

The admission empties the shrine of its last uncertainty. The caravaner lowers his hands, exposing the red crescent mark, while the condemned guard watches without triumph.

Tomas Rell

Then the forged seal and hidden ledger were your work. Why frame the guard?

Caravaner 1

Caravaner 1

The guard refused my bribe. I thought the false seal would make his loyalty look like treason.

The Armed Travelers take custody of the confessed caravaner without striking him. The noose stays untouched, and the recovered ledger rests openly beside the broken mold.
