Neon spills over the night market, turning steam and signage into pink and blue haze. Skewers hiss, pastry trays glint, and Boopsy weaves past a knot of shoppers with her handbag tucked close.

At the spice stall, Mr. Henderson stands under a paper lantern, one hand on a bag of dried chilies. He looks up, and his stern teacher face softens fast.

Mr. Henderson

Mr. Henderson

Boopsy? There you are. Are you finally cooking that family recipe to ease your homesickness?

Boopsy slows to a stop beside the stall. The air smells like toasted sesame, garlic, and sugar, warm enough to make the question land harder than it should.

Boopsy

Boopsy

I, um... maybe. I was looking for the right ingredients.

Mr. Henderson

Mr. Henderson

Good. Then help me choose. These chilies look smoky, but I cannot tell if they are the right kind for your mother’s version.

He turns the bag toward her, already expecting an answer, while the vendor waits with a polite smile and the line behind them starts to inch closer.

Help Mr. Henderson choose the right chilies

Oh, you're making the same thing? Ill help, but only if you let me join you. We could have a cook off. It would help with my home sickness. "Pouts her lips"

Boopsy leans in with a pout, and Mr. Henderson’s stern look slips into something softer and almost amused.

Mr. Henderson

Mr. Henderson

A cook-off, then. That is a much more serious offer than I expected from you.

If you two are competing, I can at least point you toward the hotter chilies.

Mr. Henderson sets the bag down between them and studies Boopsy with new attention, as if her homesickness just made sense to him.

Mr. Henderson

Mr. Henderson

All right, show me what you would choose. I want the version that tastes like home.

Biopsy diverts to the Vendor. This gentleman knows best. The spicy ones. And a few of the yellow sweeter mild versions

Boopsy turns to the spice vendor and points out two yellow, mellow chilies, then two hotter red ones with a tiny nod.

The Spice Vendor

The Spice Vendor

Good eye. Those yellow ones bring sweetness first, then the heat wakes up later.

He slides the chosen chilies into a neat paper packet and sets it beside the counter bag for Mr. Henderson to see.

Mr. Henderson

Mr. Henderson

That is exactly the kind of balance I was hoping for.

Mr. Henderson leans in, studying Boopsy’s picks like they matter, not just the price tag.

Mr. Henderson

Mr. Henderson

She is paying attention to the food, not just the heat. That counts for something.

The vendor gives Boopsy a knowing look and taps the packet once, ready for whichever chilies she wants to take next.
