The Giant Spider

Deep Woods close around a moss-covered clearing. A giant spider, its black-and-violet body bristling with coarse hairs and pale bands along its legs, thrashes within a ring of smoking herbs, its many legs scraping furrows through the damp earth.

Beside it stands an elderly orc man, broad-shouldered and stooped, with gray-green skin, braided white hair, and a dark hide robe hung with bone charms. One clawed hand presses toward the spider’s skull.

Murmured magic coils through the smoke. The spider’s legs jerk against the earth as unseen pressure tightens around its thoughts, then one gleaming eye fixes on Averil through the trees.

The Orc Shaman

The Orc Shaman

Stop where you are, surface-walker.

The shaman turns only enough to watch her, keeping his clawed hand trained on the struggling beast. The herbs hiss, and bitter smoke drifts between the trees.

The Orc Shaman

One more step, and the beast attacks. I may not be able to hold it afterward.

Averil

Averil

The smoke burns my throat, but the spider is still conscious.

Averil draws and releases in one fluid motion. The arrow cuts through the bitter smoke and drives the shaman’s sleeve into the ritual stone, wrenching his clawed hand aside.

The spell snaps apart. Smoke spills low across the clearing as the giant spider’s legs buckle, then brace against the earth without the invisible pressure tightening around its mind.

The bowstring bites through Averil’s glove and opens the skin across her knuckles. Her fingers sting, but the arrow remains buried exactly where she sent it.

The Orc Shaman

You break the binding, surface-walker. Keep your next arrow lowered, or the beast will choose its own target.

Freed of the ritual’s compulsion, the spider turns its violet-marked head toward the shaman, then toward Averil. Its fangs remain sheathed, but every eye watches.

Averil

Averil

The ritual has stopped, but the spider is still conscious.

“I try to signal to the spider that the shaman is its enemy and I am only here to help it”

Averil lowers her bow and opens both hands, then points toward the shaman before touching her own chest. She backs one careful pace from the spider, keeping her movements slow.

Averil

Averil

The spider is watching my hands, not my weapon.

The spider tracks the gesture. Its body pivots away from Averil, placing the shaman in the center of its many-eyed regard, while its fangs remain closed.

A sudden scrape of legs across stone makes Averil catch herself. Her boot slips in the damp soil, and she drops to one knee, bruising it against the ritual stone.

The Orc Shaman

The Orc Shaman

It understands you. That is more dangerous than misunderstanding.

The giant spider settles low, no longer squared toward Averil. Its foremost legs angle toward the shaman instead, guarding the space between them without attacking.

“I launch another arrow at the shaman to keep it away from the spider”

Averil rises from one knee and draws again. Her bruised leg trembles under her, but the bow comes level, the arrow aimed past the spider at the shaman’s reaching hand.

The arrow snaps through the smoke and punches into the hide robe beside the shaman’s ribs, pinning its edge to the ritual stone. The sudden jerk drags him away from the spider’s guarded space.

The Orc Shaman

The Orc Shaman

Enough! I will not touch it again.

He tears himself free, leaving a strip of dark hide caught beneath the arrowhead, and backs toward the trees with both hands raised away from the spider.

The bow’s recoil wrenches Averil’s shoulder. Pain flashes down her arm, and her injured knuckles reopen against the grip, but the shaman is no longer within reach of the beast.

The Orc Shaman

You guard a creature you barely know, surface-walker. Lower that bow, and we may both leave breathing.

The giant spider remains between them, low and alert. Its foremost legs follow the retreating shaman, while its many eyes keep Averil in wary view.

“Now that the shaman is no longer a threat, I try to slowly approach the spider and signal that I am its friend, not its foe”

Averil lowers her bow completely and advances with measured steps, keeping her palms open. She angles her body aside, offering the giant spider no sudden challenge.

Averil

Averil

Its legs are no longer braced to strike.

She touches her chest, then extends one open hand toward the spider without reaching for it. Her slow retreat from the ritual stone leaves the shaman behind her.

The giant spider watches her hand, then lowers its foremost legs. Its violet-marked head dips, and it shifts aside, opening a clear path for Averil to come within arm’s reach.

The Orc Shaman

The Orc Shaman

Slowly, then. It has accepted that you mean it no harm.

At close range, the spider folds its fangs fully away and lowers its broad body. Several eyes remain fixed on Averil, but its guarded posture has softened into wary tolerance.

“I offer it some food in exchange for it becoming my ally and joining me in this quest as one of my companions”

Averil eases one hand toward her travel pouch, then opens it beside the spider. The pouch holds only cord, dried leaves, and a few empty wrappers.

Averil

Averil

I have nothing suitable to offer it.

The giant spider leans toward the open pouch, tasting the air with delicate movements. Finding no scent of food, it draws back and raises its foremost legs again.

The Orc Shaman

The Orc Shaman

Empty hands are not the same as a gift, surface-walker. It will not follow a promise it cannot smell.

The spider sidesteps away from Averil and settles near the smoking herbs, keeping the ritual stone between them. Its tolerance remains, but the path to companionship has closed for now.

The Orc Shaman

The Orc Shaman

Leave it something real, and return another day. Until then, it belongs to no one.

“I offer it some food in exchange for it becoming my ally and joining me in this quest as one of my companions”

FAILURE (Legendary Animal Handling, rolled +1)

Averil kneels and opens the pouch wider, searching every fold for food to place before the giant spider. Only cord, dried leaves, and empty wrappers remain.

She gestures from the empty pouch to herself, then toward the forest, offering the promise of companionship without anything tangible to seal it. The spider tastes the air and retreats from the pouch.

The giant spider does not attack. Instead, it turns toward a low bank beyond the smoking herbs, where fine strands of webbing disappear beneath fern roots, then looks back at Averil.

The Orc Shaman

The Orc Shaman

It has shown you where it feeds. That is not allegiance, but it is more than refusal.

The spider nudges the empty wrapper once with a foremost leg, then withdraws beneath the fern-shadowed bank. Its path is clear, but it will not follow Averil from this clearing.

The Orc Shaman

The Orc Shaman

Bring what it hunts, surface-walker. Not promises. The webbed hollow will tell you whether it remembers this offer.

“I offer for it to my ally and join me in this quest as one of my companions, and in exchange it will be protected, fed, and have companionship”

SUCCESS (Legendary Animal Handling, rolled +0)

Averil lowers herself beside the fern-shadowed bank and extends both empty hands toward the hollow. She gestures to the forest, then to herself, offering the giant spider protection, food, and companionship on the road.

She presses one palm to her chest, then lays it over the other, making a sheltering shape. A thorn catches her cloak and tears the green hem as she holds still.

The giant spider emerges from beneath the roots. It tests Averil’s scent, circles her once, and places one long foreleg against the offered hand without raising its fangs.

Its weight shifts forward. The spider turns from the webbed hollow and settles beside Averil’s knee, close enough that its violet-marked head rests within her reach.

The Orc Shaman

The Orc Shaman

Then it has chosen your road. Do not mistake protection for obedience, surface-walker.

Averil

Averil

Its foreleg is warm beneath my hand.

The giant spider follows when Averil rises, keeping beside her instead of returning beneath the bank. The torn cloak trails a loose green thread, marking the cost of the new companionship.
