Heat shimmers over the desert caravan yard. Dust, freight crates, and armored walkers form a rough ring around the parked rigs. Shifter steps into the open and finds the broker waiting in the center, calm as a blade.

Imperial officers stand shoulder to shoulder with the caravan guards. Their rifles are leveled straight at Shifter's chest, hands steady, fingers resting near triggers.

Joren

Joren

You came exactly when I expected.

Joren

Joren

This blockade was never meant to stop the caravan. It was meant to keep you on schedule.

The broker lifts two fingers in a lazy little salute, then gestures toward Shifter like a host introducing the last guest to a private feast.

Joren

Joren

The rebel cause you were sent to ignite, it was a fabrication. A lure. And you walked into it.

A trooper shifts his stance. Another tightens her aim. No one fires. They are waiting for the broker's signal, and the whole yard holds its breath.

Joren

Joren

Now, Shifter, do you surrender quietly, or do you make this expensive?

Shifter

So that it...?

Shifter lets the words hang, and his gaze drifts across the gunline instead of the broker. He is not reading faces so much as timing, the tiny shifts of weight behind the rifles.

Too many guards stand locked in place, but a few are tighter than the rest, shoulders set for a quick command. The ring is disciplined. It is also waiting for one voice to move first.

Shifter

Shifter

He notes the right flank is tighter than the left.

The broker's smile thins as he notices the pause. An officer near the rigs tilts her rifle a fraction higher, and the nearest guards mirror her without looking away from Shifter.

Joren

Joren

Looking for a weak point, rebel? There is one. It is just not yours.

Dust skates through the hot light. The circle stays closed, and the rifles do not lower.

Is the broker trying to capture me alive?

YES, AND MORE (Likely, rolled 12)

Joren

Joren

Alive, yes. But do not mistake my intent for mercy. You are a trophy, Shifter, and the Empire has a very specific display case waiting for you.

Joren

Joren

They want you intact enough to endure the interrogation, and broken enough to never dream of rebellion again.

I take two large side steps "I see." I say with little emotional intensity

Shifter slides two long steps sideways, just enough to unseat the broker’s line of sight, and the nearest rifles twitch after him.

Shifter

Shifter

I see.

The broker’s smile thins. He studies Shifter like a profitable wound, then glances toward the officers as if checking that they are still obedient.

Joren

Joren

Good. Understanding saves time. You were always meant to be seen, not heard.

Mara Vey

Mara Vey

Enough talking. Take him alive.

Shifter’s shift reveals a narrow gap between two supply sleds, but the cost lands immediately, a boot scraping loud against metal decking and drawing every muzzle a fraction tighter.

Joren

Joren

There it is, that old reflex. You still move like someone trained by us.

For a heartbeat, the broker sounds almost pleased, like betrayal is a language he enjoys hearing spoken back.

Joren

Joren

Tell me, Shifter, when they sold your cause, did you ever suspect they were selling you with it?

Possibly. Do you often confuse a boot on the neck for a pat on the head?

Shifter’s unseen force snaps outward. Rifles wrench free of gloved hands and skid across the decking toward him in a clattering wave.

Blue-white fire wakes in his palm, a psychic blade hissing into shape as the gunline recoils in surprise.

Joren

Joren

What are you doing?

Mara Vey

Mara Vey

Hold formation. Move!

The lane between the sleds becomes a sudden opening as bodies lurch back from the pull, and the first stolen rifles slam into Shifter’s reach.

The broker’s confidence cracks. He stares at the disarmed line, then at the ignited blade, while the officer starts to draw her sidearm.

Shifter closes the distance in a measured walk, blade low. The Broker’s confidence buckles as the psychic edge flashes up under his guard and bites across his knee.

Joren

Joren

Ah! No, wait, I can still make this work.

His leg collapses. Dust bursts from the decking as he drops hard, clutching at himself and losing all height in the broken lane.

Mara Vey

Mara Vey

Kill his momentum! Do not let him through!

The nearest guards hesitate for a heartbeat, rifles scattered and formation split, but the officer’s order snaps them back into motion.

Shifter

Shifter

Still forgetting I am trained by the Inquisitorius.

The opening is there now, ugly and real, with the Broker on the ground and the gunline scrambling to close around Shifter’s blade.

Shifter hooks the Broker with a hard telekinetic yank and throws him bodily into the exposed lane. Dust explodes under the impact as the man slams into the nearest Imperial line, breaking their aim and their nerve.

Joren

Joren

No, stop, he is using me!

A rifleman staggers back under the collision, and the Officer’s formation buckles wide enough for Shifter to slip through. The cost hits in the same breath, a hot spike behind Shifter’s eyes from the force he spends all at once.

Mara Vey

Mara Vey

Cut him off, now!

Two guards lunge late, but the breach is already opening into a clear run beyond the trap. The Broker is still tangled in the Imperials’ legs, buying Shifter a narrow, violent exit.

Shifter breaks into the open lane, boots hammering hard-packed dust. Ahead, a sand-streaked cargo skimmer sits half-turned near the yard fence, its hatch hanging open.

He reaches it in a few long strides, the yard noise thinning behind him as the broken Imperial line scrambles to recover.

Shifter grabs the skimmer frame and swings himself up to the hatch, his earlier strain still tight across his face.

Mara Vey

Mara Vey

Stop him! Seal the yard!

The order snaps across the dust, but the nearest guards are still tangled around the Broker, and their first steps come late.

Shifter gets a hand on the hatch edge, now within the vehicle’s shadow, while the engine bay sits dead and silent beneath him.

If he takes that skimmer, I am finished.

Shifter yanks the hatch wider and drops into the cockpit. The cramped cabin wakes with a harsh click, then the skimmer coughs awake under his hands.

The dashboard blooms with amber status lights. Dust shakes off the console as the engine catches, low and rough.

Mara Vey

Mara Vey

Fire on the skimmer! Do not let it roll!

Outside, boots skid through the lane, but the first bolts strike the frame instead of Shifter. The hatch rattles against its hinge.

Joren

Joren

He is getting away. No, no, not like this.

Shifter gets the skimmer moving. The nose swings toward the clear path beyond the breached yard, tires spitting dust.

The Imperial line breaks into a chase behind him, and the open lane becomes a corridor of noise and flying grit.
