The Road That Takes Names

Mist gathers thickly at the crossroads, swallowing the old milestone and silvering the shrine’s mossy stones. A caravan limps toward the shrine, wheels groaning beneath dark, rain-stained canvas.

Sister Vael

Sister Vael

By ash and river, be received. By lantern and bell, be counted.

The shrine maiden circles a smoking brazier, scattering salt and crimson petals before each wagon. The travelers remain motionless beneath their veils, silent as mourners.

The shrine bells ring overhead, though the hanging cords and surrounding branches are perfectly still. Beside the caravan’s wheel tracks, fresh footprints appear one by one.

Sister Vael

Sister Vael

You there. Do not let them reach the hollow road.

She sees Mylla through the fog and thrusts one trembling hand toward the road. Behind the wagons, mist folds inward, closing around axles, beasts, and veiled faces.

Sister Vael

Sister Vael

Quickly, traveler. Stand where the second footsteps pass, or the road will take another name.

“I stand where the second footprints appear.”

FAILURE (Fair Agility, rolled -2)

The Road That Takes Names

Mylla steps into the place where the second footprints should appear. Her boot meets wet earth, but the mark forms a pace behind her instead.

The mist tightens around her ankles without touching them, drawing a pale line from her heel toward the hollow road. The caravan’s tracks vanish beneath it.

Sister Vael

Sister Vael

No. You stood upon the passing, not before it.

A second set of footprints now circles Mylla, each impression appearing just beyond her reach. The shrine bells give one deep chime, and every veiled traveler turns toward her.

Sister Vael

Sister Vael

Do not chase the prints. They have marked you as their measure.

The pale line brightens like moonlight under water, splitting the crossroads between Mylla and the caravan. The wagons remain still, but their shadows begin facing the wrong way.

Sister Vael

Sister Vael

Hold fast where you are, traveler. The road now knows your shape.

“Does the shrine maiden know what answers the forgotten name?”

NO (Likely, rolled 75)

The shrine maiden’s lips part, but no answer comes. Her gaze drops to the bright line dividing the crossroads, as though the forgotten name lies beyond her authority.

Sister Vael

Sister Vael

I do not know what answers it. I know only that the road remembers what we have lost.

The bells fall silent. Around Mylla, the circling footprints stop appearing, leaving the last impression pointed toward the hollow road.

Sister Vael

Sister Vael

The name is older than this shrine, older than my vows. I can guard its threshold, but I cannot speak its answer.

Behind the maiden, the veiled travelers remain turned toward Mylla. Their shadows still face away, stretched along roads no living lantern can reveal.

Sister Vael

Sister Vael

If the hollow road has chosen her measure, then its answer may be waiting where the names disappear.

“I tilt my head at the caravan, wanting to take a closer look.”

Mylla tilts her head toward the caravan and fixes her gaze beyond the rain-dark canvas. The mist thins around her eyes, revealing what ordinary sight concealed.

Inside the nearest wagon, the veils conceal no travelers but bundles of pale wooden name-plaques, each carved with a vanished person’s face. Thin roots bind them together.

The wagon’s rear flap lifts without wind. Beyond it lies a cramped shrine chamber, not a wagon bed, with a black road painted across its floor and disappearing into the boards.

Sister Vael

Sister Vael

You see the remembered cargo. Do not touch it. Names cling more fiercely than thorns.

A sharp pulse crosses Mylla’s brow as the vision settles. One thread of her hair catches on the shrine’s unseen boundary and tears free, leaving a small sting.

Sister Vael

Sister Vael

There, beneath the third plaque. That mark is the road’s first door, and now you know where it opens.

Mylla

I am Mylla. It is a pleasure to meet you, shrine maiden.

Her introduction crosses the mist softly, yet the painted road beneath the wagon shivers. The third plaque turns in its root binding, exposing a narrow silver mark.

Sister Vael

Sister Vael

And I am Sister Vael. May courtesy shelter you, Mylla, though this road has little mercy for names freely given.

The plaque’s carved face changes beneath the dim shrine-light. Its features blur, then settle into an unfamiliar likeness crowned with branching antlers.

Sister Vael

Sister Vael

That is not one of the vanished. It is a door-keeper, or the memory of one. Your greeting has woken its attention.

From within the wagon-chamber comes a dry wooden knock. Once, twice, then a third time beneath the marked plaque. The black road painted on the floor lengthens toward Mylla’s feet.

Sister Vael

Sister Vael

Stand ready, Mylla. If it answers, listen for what it calls itself, and do not offer anything in return.

“I nod, listening intently”

Mylla nods once and stills herself beneath the wagon-chamber’s threshold. The mist hushes around her, while the black painted road draws her attention into its silent depth.

The third plaque answers with a low wooden resonance. Its silver mark unfolds into letters that seem carved directly into the darkness: Veyr, Keeper of the Unreturned.

Sister Vael

Sister Vael

You heard it. Veyr is the name beneath the names, the hand that gathers those the hollow road refuses to release.

The plaque’s roots tighten around the other name-plaques, and a sharp splinter pierces Mylla’s palm where her hand hangs beside the threshold. A bead of blood darkens the wood.

Sister Vael

Sister Vael

Do not withdraw. The road has taken a small measure, and in exchange it has spoken plainly.

At the name Veyr, the painted road opens into a narrow silver seam. Beyond it waits the scent of rain over distant stone, and faint bells counting backward.

Sister Vael

Sister Vael

Now we know whom the threshold serves. Whether Veyr is jailer, guide, or prisoner, the hollow road has given you its first true name.

Mylla

Sister Vael, how do I halt the caravan?

Vael turns from the silver seam toward the wagons. The veiled figures remain motionless, but their shadows strain along the wrong-facing roads.

Sister Vael

Sister Vael

Call the caravan by its first road-name, not by the names carved in those plaques. Then break the painted road at its beginning.

She points to the black line beneath the third plaque, where its narrow silver seam now reaches the threshold and touches the wet earth.

Sister Vael

Sister Vael

Place your bleeding palm upon that seam and speak: By ash and river, no farther. The road must recognize a boundary.

The caravan jolts as though waking from a dream. Its wheels grind forward, then stop together, halted before the hollow road. The mist recoils from every axle.

Sister Vael

Sister Vael

There. It cannot carry them onward now. Veyr will know the halt, and may answer why these names were gathered.
