Footprints Beyond the Reeds

Morning mist lies over a small forest pond. Kyouko wakes on damp moss, the memory of an accident flashing through her mind before the unfamiliar canopy comes into focus.

When she pushes herself upright, pink furred ears twitch above her head. A matching tail curls beside her, attached to a body smaller and stronger than the one she remembers.

Kyouko

Kyouko

These ears and tail are real.

The pond reflects a young catkin face with bright pink hair and red, slit-pupiled eyes. Black leather armor and fingerless gloves sit unfamiliar against her altered frame.

Across the water, reeds shiver without wind. The ripples spread outward, then fade beneath the silvered surface.

One wet footprint appears on the muddy bank. Then another follows, rising from the reeds toward the trees, though no figure is yet visible.

The forest holds its breath around the pond. Somewhere beyond the curtain of reeds, water drips steadily, and something shifts just out of sight.

✓ Quest Accepted

Hold the approaching presence at bay

“I realize my confusion will have to wait. Not even a minute in... Wherever I am, and there's already something trying to kill me, eat me, or maybe just ask for directions.”

My confusion will have to wait. Something is already approaching, and I do not know whether it means harm.

The unseen presence pauses among the reeds. Water beads fall from leaves, each drop loud in the sudden stillness.

A small, antlered creature steps into view, its russet hide dark with pond water. It watches Kyouko with wide golden eyes, carrying no weapon.

the antlered creature

the antlered creature

Easy, little catkin. I seek only the old stone path.

The creature lowers its narrow head, sniffing the air once, then glances toward the trees. Its wet footprints end at the waterline.

the antlered creature

the antlered creature

Have you seen it? The path bends beneath the silver birch, but the mist has hidden every landmark.

“A talking deer, or deer-adjacent creature, and it's quite polite. I shake my head at it. "I'm sorry, but I've only just awakened here, and I don't really know who I'm supposed to be, or where 'here' even is."”

Kyouko shakes her head, pink ears tilting back as she faces the antlered creature across the damp bank.

I'm sorry, but I've only just awakened here, and I don't really know who I'm supposed to be, or where here even is.

the antlered creature

the antlered creature

Then you are no guide at all. Forgive me, little catkin. I mistook your waking for knowledge of this place.

The creature's polite composure falters. It studies Kyouko's unfamiliar armor, then the pond, as though the water itself has delivered an unanswered riddle.

the antlered creature

the antlered creature

This is Mirrorpond, beneath the eastern forest. The old stone path should lead west, yet I cannot find it.

the antlered creature

You need not name yourself before you are ready. Come to the birch line, and we may search together. Standing here will teach neither of us where we are.

It turns toward the silver birches, leaving the choice visible between them: follow a stranger's guidance or remain beside the mist-shrouded pond.

“I was never a person who would just stand there doing nothing. "I suppose just staying here looking at my own weird reflection won't help me figure out any of my own mysteries," I admit. "But I do remember my name, at least. Kyouko."”

I suppose just staying here, staring at my own strange reflection, will not help me uncover any of these mysteries. But I remember my name, at least. Kyouko.

Kyouko leaves the pond behind and follows the antlered creature toward the silver birches. Mist beads on her armor as the wet ground gives way to roots and pale stones.

the antlered creature

the antlered creature

Kyouko. A good name to carry into an uncertain morning. I am glad you chose the path rather than the reflection.

At the birch line, the creature brushes aside hanging fern fronds. Beneath them, moss-covered stones emerge in a deliberate curve, marking the old road west.

the antlered creature

the antlered creature

There it is. The path has not vanished, only hidden itself beneath the forest's patience.

The ancient stones lead between white trunks, their surfaces carved with worn spiral marks. Beyond the first bend, the mist thins and reveals distant blue hills.

the antlered creature

the antlered creature

Walk beside me, Kyouko. We can seek answers on the road, and perhaps the road will decide which answers come first.

“"I have too many answers to find," I admit. "This body feels strange, this forest is a place my instincts tell me is not my usual sleeping spot, and I'm not even sure I'm not just dreaming all of this."”

Kyouko

I have too many answers to find. This body feels strange, this forest is not where I usually sleep, and I am not sure I am not dreaming.

Her words follow the old road beneath the birches, but the mist swallows their certainty. The carved spirals seem to shift when she looks away, offering no proof that the morning is real.

the antlered creature

the antlered creature

Dreams rarely leave cold water on armor, or stones beneath weary feet. Yet I cannot prove waking to you merely by insisting upon it.

The creature taps one hoof against a mossy stone. A faint chime answers from below the road, and a hairline seam opens between two ancient slabs.

the antlered creature

the antlered creature

There is an old waystone beneath this path. It remembers names spoken in earnest. If it answers yours, you will have one certainty to carry forward.

the antlered creature

the antlered creature

If the stone stays silent, then the forest has brought me someone stranger than any lost traveler.

The seam widens into a narrow stair descending beneath the birches. Pale blue light rises from below, while the western road remains open beyond it.

“I go down the stairs, realizing saying my name to a waystone is no weirder than waking up as a catgirl, or meeting a talking deer.”

Kyouko steps onto the narrow stair and descends beneath the birches. Damp stone curves downward, blue radiance gathering softly around her boots.

the antlered creature

the antlered creature

Careful footing, Kyouko. The waystone remembers more than names, but it welcomes no one who treats it lightly.

The antlered creature follows close behind. Above, the stair's opening shrinks to a pale oval, while roots thread the ceiling like sleeping serpents.

At the bottom, a round chamber opens around a waist-high stone. Its surface is smooth and dark, marked by a single silver spiral.

the antlered creature

the antlered creature

There. Stand before it, and speak the name you carry. The stone will decide whether it recognizes you.

Kyouko reaches the chamber floor. The waystone answers her arrival with a low, resonant chime, and blue light flows through the spiral.

the antlered creature

the antlered creature

It heard you, even before you spoke. That is no ordinary welcome, little catkin.

Kyouko

I am Kyouko.

Her name settles into the chamber. The waystone's silver spiral brightens, and a clear tone rings through the roots overhead.

Blue light spills across the floor in widening circles. Within it, faint symbols gather around Kyouko's boots, forming words in an ancient script.

the antlered creature

the antlered creature

It recognizes you. Not as a traveler, nor as a child of these woods, but as one who crossed a boundary.

The symbols shift. One becomes a doorway, another a falling star, and the last resolves into a crowned flame before fading back into the stone.

the antlered creature

the antlered creature

The stone names no birthplace. It names passage. Your arrival is written into an older road than this one.

The radiance withdraws into the spiral, leaving a single warm mark beneath Kyouko's hand when she reaches toward the waystone. The chamber falls quiet.

Discover what the waystone recognizes about Kyouko

“I nod. "I was someone else, before. In some other world. I died, or I should have died, but then I found myself in this body. Whether the body was created for me, or it belonged to someone else before, I don't know."”

I was someone else, before. In another world, I died, or should have died, and then found myself in this body. I do not know whether it was made for me or belonged to someone else.

The confession settles over the chamber. The waystone's warm mark darkens beneath Kyouko's hand, and the silver spiral breaks into uneven fragments of light.

the antlered creature

the antlered creature

Another world. Death survived. A body without a known first owner. Those are too many crossings for one stone to hold.

The fragments rise like brief sparks, forming a doorway and a falling star before collapsing. The stone gives no answer about the body, and its blue radiance withdraws completely.

the antlered creature

the antlered creature

It cannot judge what happened before your passage, Kyouko. It recognizes only that you arrived through a boundary, not whether you were summoned, remade, or displaced.

A thin seam closes across the waystone's face. The chamber's ancient welcome is finished, leaving the unanswered questions with Kyouko and the silent road above.

the antlered creature

the antlered creature

Do not ask this stone to name your former life again. It has given all it can, and forcing it would make the path forget you.

“I nod, looking at the antlered creature. "Then this stone knows what I am, what I was. I was someone else, before, in some other world. I died, or I should have died, but then I found myself in this body. Whether the body was created for me, or it belonged to someone else before, I don't know."”

Then this stone knows what I am, what I was. I was someone else, before, in some other world. I died, or should have died, but found myself in this body. I do not know whether it was created for me or belonged to someone else.

Kyouko nods toward the antlered creature. As her confession settles, the waystone's warmth drains from her palm, leaving her hand numb and the silver spiral fractured into dim sparks.

the antlered creature

the antlered creature

Then you remember a former self, a death interrupted, and a body whose first story is hidden from you. I believe that much.

The last sparks gather briefly into the shape of a doorway and a falling star. The stone offers no name, no maker, and no answer about who first wore this body.

the antlered creature

the antlered creature

The waystone confirms passage, not purpose. It knows what you are now and that you were elsewhere, but those older questions lie beyond its keeping.

the antlered creature

the antlered creature

Come. Your hand has paid enough for its silence, and the living road may hold answers this dead stone cannot.

“I follow the creature onto the living road”

Kyouko turns from the silent waystone and follows the antlered creature up the narrow stair. Blue light fades behind them as daylight gathers through the roots.

the antlered creature

the antlered creature

That is wise. Stones remember, but roads reveal. Keep your eyes open, and the forest may answer without being asked.

They emerge beneath the silver birches. Morning mist has thinned, revealing the old road winding west between mossy stones and pools of pale sunlight.

Kyouko walks beside the creature as the forest slowly brightens. Dew slips from white branches, and the distant blue hills grow clearer beyond the trees.

the antlered creature

the antlered creature

The road reaches a crossroads before noon. One branch leads toward the hill villages, another toward older ruins. Perhaps one will suit your questions.

Behind them, the hidden stair seals beneath the birches. Ahead, the living road continues west, carrying their footsteps toward the open country.

“I decide to head for the villages. The creature is friendly enough, but maybe I'll find a person who knows me, or whoever this body belonged to.”
