Sobekov steps from the crooked tavern into lantern smoke. Three shabby men wait in a loose ring, their stained coats and red faces drawing a widening crowd.

There he is. The monk who spilled my ale on purpose.

The speaker is a broad middle-aged man with a scarred cheek and an iron-studded vest. Beside him, a narrow older man grips a cudgel, while a younger man rolls his shoulders.

Renn

Renn

You owe us for the tankard, the drink, and the insult. Pay now, or prove you meant it.

Their timing is too clean, their accusation too polished for their sour breath. At the tavern doorway, three adventurers watch: a gray-haired woman in travel leathers, a lean young man with a spear, and a stocky dwarf woman beneath a red hood.

Mara

Mara

Look closely. They are measuring him, not merely baiting a brawl.

The crowd falls quiet around the ring. The scarred drunk raises one palm, making the first demand unmistakable: Sobekov must surrender his flask before the fight begins.

Sobekov lifts the flask and takes a hard swallow. The liquor burns down his throat as he lets one shoulder sag and his footing turn uncertain.

That's right. Drink up, monk. Makes this easier.

The scarred drunk steps in, reaching for the flask. Sobekov's stumble folds sharply forward, carrying his forehead into the man's face before suspicion can catch up.

Gah! You cheating bastard!

The broad man reels back clutching his nose, stunned and off balance. The impact jolts Sobekov's brow against bone, leaving a hot ache beneath his temple.

Mara

Mara

There. That was no drunken accident. Watch the hands.

The flask slips from Sobekov's fingers and strikes the cobbles, spilling liquor into the lanternlit dust. The younger drunk surges forward while the cudgel man circles.

“I lean over to pick up the flask ducking under the charging man causing him to flip over my hip as this he was thrown on purpose”

Sobekov bends toward the fallen flask as the younger drunk charges. His body folds beneath the swinging arms, one hand closing around the flask while his hip turns into the attacker’s path.

With a sharp pivot, Sobekov catches the charging man across his hip and guides his momentum onward. The younger drunk flips cleanly over him and lands hard on the dusty street.

Ungh! What in the nine hells was that?

Sobekov rises with the flask secure in his grip. Behind him, the younger drunk sprawls, winded but conscious, while the spilled liquor glitters between the cobbles.

Renn

Renn

Keep your distance! He is not drunk enough for this.

The narrow drunk halts his circling advance, cudgel lifted uncertainly. The scarred man steadies himself near the tavern door, staring at Sobekov with renewed caution.

Mara

Mara

Exactly. He turns their force against them. Now watch what the last two choose.

Sobekov raises the flask and drains the last burning mouthful. As the narrow drunk tightens his grip on the cudgel, Sobekov snaps the empty flask forward.

The flask strikes across the man's face and bursts his focus in a splash of liquor. He staggers, blinking blindly, cudgel dipping toward the cobbles.

Renn

Renn

My eyes! Damn you!

Sobekov steps inside the opening and drives a compact strike into the man's stomach. The narrow drunk folds with a strangled gasp, his weapon hand going slack.

Sobekov catches the man's arm before he can recover, twists it behind his back, and strips away the cudgel. The weapon lands beside the empty flask.

Three movements, and the weapon is his. If the last one charges, he will learn the same lesson.

“As the third man charges inside step him and hit him with a scorpion kick to the head while maintaining a hold of the narrow man”

The scarred drunk roars and charges. Sobekov keeps Renn's arm locked behind him, turning the narrow man into a fixed anchor as the attacker closes.

Sobekov steps inside the rush. His planted foot pivots, and his free leg whips backward in a tight scorpion kick, heel striking the scarred man's head.

Ghk!

The scarred drunk's charge collapses into a sideways stumble. He drops heavily near the tavern threshold, conscious but unable to press the attack.

Renn... let go! I am done!

Sobekov maintains the hold until Renn's resistance leaves him. The cudgel remains on the cobbles, while the crowd recoils into a wider ring.

That settles it. He was holding one man and still put the other down without losing his balance.

“I search the man I have captive for coin and drink and then allow him to scamper off intent on finding my next drink”

Sobekov keeps Renn bent forward while one hand searches the man's coat. His fingers find a small purse and a squat clay flask tucked beneath the lining.

The purse holds a few dull coins. The flask contains harsh grain liquor, though its cork tears loose with a sharp rip that turns several heads in the crowd.

The flask is still warm.

Renn

Renn

Take it, monk. Take everything. Just let me go.

Sobekov releases the lock. Renn stumbles away clutching his arm, then breaks into a frantic run down the lanternlit street without looking back.

Mara

Mara

He pays himself, then frees the man. Strange discipline for a disgraced monk.

The crowd parts as Sobekov pockets the coins and keeps the flask. His scraped knuckles sting from the search, but the tavern signs ahead promise another drink.

What the hell are you looking at?

Sobekov turns toward the doorway, flask loose in his hand. The question cuts across the street, but his unsteady stance makes it sound more like a challenge than an invitation.

Mara

Mara

A fighter who searches a defeated man's coat, takes his liquor, then asks why witnesses are watching. We are looking at a problem.

the stocky dwarf woman

the stocky dwarf woman

Easy, Mara. He may be a problem worth hiring. Three men folded, and he barely spent a breath.

The exchange shifts the crowd's attention back onto Sobekov. Mara steps from the doorway, while the spear carrier and the stocky dwarf woman remain behind her, measuring the distance.

Mara

Mara

You wanted to know. We need someone who can put down dangerous men without steel. There is coin in it, if you can stay upright long enough to hear the offer.

“I tell him if he buys me a drink I will listen to his proposition”

Sobekov Kerensky

Buy me a drink, and I will listen to your proposition.

Mara studies the flask in Sobekov’s hand, then the tavern behind him. Her expression hardens as the crowd waits for her answer.

Mara

Mara

No. I will not purchase liquor for a man already staggering through his own negotiation.

She steps fully into the lanternlight, a gray-haired woman in travel leathers, lean and weathered, with a scar crossing one eyebrow. Her companions remain by the doorway.

Mara

Mara

Here is my offer instead. Hear three sentences, sober enough to understand them. If the work interests you, your first drink comes from my purse.

the stocky dwarf woman

And if it does not interest him, Mara? He can spend the stolen coins on another bottle and pretend this never happened.

Mara ignores the dwarf’s jab and holds Sobekov’s gaze. The bargain has shifted: no drink precedes the proposition, and the coins in his pocket suddenly feel very few.

“I decide to listen focusing hard to retain every detail”

FAILURE (Poor Willpower, rolled +2)

Sobekov stills his breathing and fixes his mismatched eyes on Mara, forcing each word into order while tavern noise blurs at the edges.

Mara

Mara

A caravan leaves before dawn for the eastern passes, carrying a sealed reliquary that several armed factions want.

Mara

Mara

We need a fighter who can guard it without attracting notice, and the road pays more than this street brawl.

Mara

Mara

You travel with us, keep your hands disciplined, and receive your first silver at the gate, with more when the reliquary arrives.

Sobekov catches the eastern passes, the reliquary, and the promise of silver, but the exact departure hour slides loose beneath the liquor’s warmth. Mara notices his concentration falter.

Mara

Mara

You retained the heart of it, at least. If details are the obstacle, read the contract yourself. I will not repeat the offer aloud.

“I grab the contract read the departure time and agree to it’s terms”

SUCCESS (Good Perception, rolled +2)

Sobekov takes the contract from Mara and holds it close beneath the lantern. The cramped script swims once, then settles into readable lines.

Sobekov Kerensky

The caravan leaves before dawn, at the fifth bell.

His finger follows the departure clause, then the promised payments and duties. The eastern passes, sealed reliquary, and arrival silver are plainly recorded.

Sobekov Kerensky

I agree to the terms. I will be at the gate before the fifth bell.

Mara watches him sign beneath the agreement. The tavern crowd quiets again, sensing the brawl has become employment.

Mara

Then keep the contract dry and your fists sheathed until dawn. We leave when the fifth bell sounds.
