Encounter in the Ruined Hall
The Hooded Figure
The Hooded Figure

Kara stands in a narrow stone hall, half-lit by a guttering torch. Dust lies thick over the floor, broken only by her boot prints and the trace of old drag marks.

She scans the chamber. A carved arch opens into darkness ahead, and to her left a line of iron hooks hangs from the wall, empty but recently disturbed.

On the right, a low table sits beneath a cracked window. A map case, a snapped cord, and a smear of dried mud suggest someone left in a hurry.

A soft scrape comes from beyond the arch.

Who is there? Come out slow, and keep your hands where I can see them.

The Hooded Figure

The Hooded Figure

Easy. I am not your enemy, if you are not mine.

The hooded figure steps into the torchlight, one hand raised, the other hiding something small at their belt. Their gaze flicks past Kara, measuring exits.

The Hooded Figure

The Hooded Figure

I was searching this place too. Did you find the key, or only the ghosts?

Deal with the hooded figure

The Hooded Figure
The Hooded Figure

The hooded figure’s hidden hand shifts at their belt, and the small thing there catches the torchlight, a brass key, not tucked away, but ready to flash at a glance. From the arch behind them comes a second scrape, then the wet rustle of feet on stone. The figure goes rigid.

The Hooded Figure

The Hooded Figure

Do not move. If you want that key, help me hold the door.

A cracked slab in the archway grinds upward from the floor, slow and heavy, throwing dust into the torchlight. Something is forcing it open from the other side.

“Is something forcing the slab open?”

NO (VeryLikely, rolled 96)

The grinding noise abruptly ceases, and the stone slab settles back into its groove with a final, hollow thud. The pressure against the archway vanishes, leaving only the silence of the dusty hall.

“Is the hooded figure hiding the key?”

YES, BUT (Likely, rolled 60)

The Hooded Figure

The Hooded Figure

It is not the key you seek, but a mere trinket of brass that keeps this seal from crumbling entirely.

The Hooded Figure

The Hooded Figure

She watches me too closely, and I cannot let her see the true weight of what I carry beneath this cloak.

“Is the hooded figure hiding something dangerous?”

YES, AND MORE (Likely, rolled 13)

The Hooded Figure

The Hooded Figure

You have no idea what stirs in the dark, Kara. This trinket is a tether for a nightmare that would consume this entire hall if I were to let it slip.

The air around them feels heavy, like the static before a storm, and the shadows seem to cling to their cloak with a life of their own.

“I demand the truth about the brass key”

Kara does not lower her gaze. The hooded figure finally stills, then draws a slow breath, as if the hall itself is listening.

Kara

Kara

Tell me the truth about the brass key.

The Hooded Figure

The Hooded Figure

Truth? It is not a key for a lock. It is a seal, and a warning. My order hid it here after the ruin began to wake.

The Hooded Figure

The Hooded Figure

If I say too much, she will leave. If I say too little, the hall will break.

Their hand slips from the cloak, and the brass key glints in the torchlight, scratched with old runes. A tremor runs through their arm, and a drop of blood marks the stone at their feet.

The Hooded Figure

The Hooded Figure

I need help because I cannot hold the door and keep the seal intact alone. Help me, and I will tell you what was buried beneath this hall.

Kara gets the truth at last, but the figure’s answer costs them, the violet light under the cloak flaring brighter for a heartbeat as they wait for her choice.
