An Angry Fishmonger

Eno Phmann slips back from the market’s crooked lanes, stolen goods concealed beneath his runaway squire’s cloak. Ahead, torchlight flickers around the hidden entrance.

An angry crowd packs the narrow yard, blocking the stones and shouting over one another. At its center stands Eno’s friend, a young adult woman with wind-tossed brown hair, a red scarf, and a bruised cheek.

Sella

Sella

You took everything from us, and now you hide behind a door?

She points toward the concealed entrance, where fresh scratches mar the masonry. Several townsfolk carry clubs, market poles, or lanterns, their faces tight with vengeance.

Drag the thief out! Let the watch decide what remains of him.

Sella

Sella

No watch. He answers for what he did here.

A gap opens briefly between two shouting villagers, revealing the entrance and Eno’s friend beyond them. Then the crowd surges, and every head begins turning toward the returning wolfkin.

Get past the angry crowd

✓ Quest Accepted

Protect Eno's friend from the mob

“*I back away around a corner before throwing a rock to distract the mob from my friend and using that distraction I sneak in, grab my friend and pull them into the guild.*”

FAILURE (Fair Stealth, rolled +0)

The Crowd Turns on Eno

Eno backs around the corner, leaving the crowd’s sight. Along the wall, loose stones lie beyond the yard’s reach, but no rock rests beneath his hand.

Eno Phmann

There is nothing here to throw.

He makes the empty feint anyway. No clatter draws the mob away; instead, a lantern swings toward the corner as several villagers catch his movement.

Sella

Sella

Eno, no! The doorway is watched!

He slips through the narrowing gap and catches his friend by the arm, pulling toward the concealed entrance. The crowd surges with them, boots scraping stone.

An Angry Fishmonger

There! The thief has shown himself. Bar the guild door!

Eno’s friend is torn from his grasp as townsfolk wedge between them. The entrance vanishes behind raised poles and angry bodies, while the guild’s hidden threshold remains unreachable.

“*I pull my friend out of the crowd and try to lead them to another entrance while losing the mob.*”

FAILURE (Great Agility, rolled -1)

The Crowd Turns on Eno

Eno drives his shoulder into the nearest bodies and reaches for his friend again. The crowd buckles, but raised poles and grasping hands force them apart.

Sella

Sella

This way, Eno! The old dye-runoff passage!

His friend twists free for one step and points beyond the fishmonger’s stall, where a narrow alley drops toward the guild’s rear wall.

Eno catches her sleeve, but the surge carries them sideways instead of forward. A lantern crashes against the stall, spilling light across their escape.

An Angry Fishmonger

They’re breaking for the lower lane! Close it!

The mob splits after them, cutting off the yard and the concealed doorway. Eno and his friend stumble behind the stall, separated from the main crush but not yet free.

Sella

Sella

The runoff passage is barred from this side, but the bar can be lifted. We have one chance before they circle around.

“*I use minor water magic to put out laterns along the path we are taking until there is an alleyway we can sneak down.*”

Eno raises one hand behind the stall. Thin threads of water gather from the damp air and gutters, trembling around his fingers like silver cords.

The magic snaps outward. One lantern after another hisses dark along the lower lane, leaving only blurred moonlight and the crowd’s confused shadows.

Sella

Sella

Good. Keep low, and follow me.

His friend ducks beneath the stall’s hanging canvas and pulls him into the unlit passage. Behind them, villagers shout and collide, their lantern glow swallowed by the darkness.

Where did they go? Search the lane!

Eno and his friend slip along the wall, boots finding shallow runoff and loose stones. The extinguished path opens into a narrow alley between leaning warehouses.

Sella

Sella

We’re clear of the yard. The rear wall is ahead, and the guild passage is on the other side.

“We make our way toward another guild entrance since the mob knows about the first one. Though they don't know what the door is for.”

Eno and Eno's friend leave the runoff behind, keeping to the warehouse shadows. The mob’s cries fade into muffled echoes beyond the crooked walls.

Sella

There’s another entrance beneath the old cooper’s storehouse. The door looks like a wine cellar, nothing more.

She leads him through a cramped service court and beneath a sagging arch. Rainwater glimmers in the ruts, reflecting no lantern light.

Eno Phmann

The storehouse door is newer than the surrounding stone.

At the court’s far end, Eno's friend brushes dust from a low, iron-banded door half-hidden behind stacked casks. No villagers watch this side.

Sella

Sella

This is it. They know the guild has a door, but not this one. Once we’re inside, we can reach the others.

She lifts a concealed latch beneath the lowest band. The lock releases with a muted click, and the second guild entrance opens into darkness.

“*I cast an illusion to hide our entrance into the guild.*”

Eno raises his hand toward the open cellar door. Arcane light gathers in thin, colorless veils, bending the doorway’s edges until stone and stacked casks appear unbroken.

The illusion settles across the entrance, replacing the visible door with a convincing stretch of damp masonry. A sharp pressure blooms behind Eno’s eyes, and blood beads beneath one nostril.

Sella

Sella

That will fool anyone glancing through the court. Come on, before the spell draws more attention than the door did.

She steps through the false wall, then reaches back. The illusion holds from outside, swallowing the iron bands and concealing the dark passage beyond.

Inside, the air smells of old wine, wet stone, and dust. Eno’s concentration wavers once, making the hidden entrance shimmer like heat above a road.

Sella

Sella

Easy. Keep the image steady until we reach the inner stairs. The others should be below.

She guides him down the cramped steps while muffled voices rise beneath them, urgent and familiar. Above, the false wall remains intact, though the blood continues to run.
