Lahani is clipped to the skin of a drifting derelict, outside a rusted asteroid mining rig that spins too close for comfort. The wreck’s hull groans under strain, and the station beyond throws warning lights across the dark. Somewhere inside the rig, proximity alarms howl.

Ahead, Riyanu braces one hand on a fused airlock seam and sweeps a scanner over a metallic artifact jammed into the bulkhead. The thing pulses under her light, like a machine trying to remember how to wake up.

Beside her, Nahuli hauls at the salvage clamps with both hands, feathers flattened by vacuum suit strain. One clamp skitters on debris grit, and the whole tether line shudders.

Lahani

Lahani

The orbit is decaying fast.

Riyanu

Riyanu

Lahani, keep that line tight. If the clamp slips, we lose the artifact and maybe the whole face of the wreck.

Nahuli

Nahuli

I know, I know. Just give me one clean second before this thing decides to peel off and kiss the station.

A deep metallic thump rolls through the rig. The derelict shifts a fraction, and the fused airlock seam starts to glow along one edge, heat bleeding through the metal.

Riyanu

Riyanu

That pulse is driving the bulkhead warm. If it breaks through now, we need a decision, fast.

✓ Quest Accepted

Stabilize the mining rig

“This is nahulis area of expertise.”

Lahani eases her grip instead of fighting the clamp. The tether stops jerking, and Nahuli gets a cleaner angle on the salvage mount.

Nahuli

Nahuli

There. That helps. The clamp was twisting the wrong way.

Riyanu

Riyanu

Good. Keep it steady while I read this pulse.

The scanner wash flickers across the artifact, then catches on a seam Lahani had not noticed, a thin service channel hiding behind scorched plating.

Nahuli

Nahuli

It is not just wedged in. It is keyed in. Someone installed it here on purpose.

Riyanu

Riyanu

That means the heat bloom is controlled, not random. We can work with that.

Nahuli shifts her stance, breathing hard but steadier now, and reaches for the clamp release with one hand while keeping the line braced with the other. The glowing seam holds, waiting.

“I hold the tether steady for Nahuli”

Lahani braces the tether and takes the jerk out of it. The line goes taut and calm in her hands, giving Nahuli a clean, steady pull on the release.

Nahuli

Nahuli

That is it. I have it lined up now.

Riyanu

Riyanu

The pulse just normalized. Your hold is letting the scanner resolve the channel.

The artifact seam answers with a low click. A hidden latch slides free inside the scorched plating, and the clamp’s strain drops away.

Nahuli

Nahuli

Good. The mount is taking the load, not fighting it.

Riyanu’s display blooms with a crisp internal schematic, the first clean read since they arrived. The channel is deliberate, routed into the rig’s old maintenance spine.

Riyanu

Riyanu

Someone built this in as a service access. That helps us, if we move before the seam cools wrong.

“I help Nahuli finish securing the clamp”

Lahani puts her weight into the line at the exact right angle. The clamp settles into its seat with a hard, final click, and the release handle stops trembling.

Nahuli

Nahuli

There. Locked.

Nahuli eases both hands off the release and checks the mount, then gives Lahani a quick nod as the strain vanishes from the hardware.

Riyanu

Riyanu

The channel is holding steady now. Readings are clean.

On Riyanu’s scanner, the internal schematic stops flickering and resolves into a solid path through the maintenance spine.

Lahani

Lahani

The clamp is seated. The rig is still hot, but the load is off the failing seam.

“I ask Riyanu what the scanner shows”

Lahani

What does the scanner show?

Riyanu

Riyanu

It is not random damage. The heat pattern is deliberate, cut to sit behind that plating. Someone built this access into the rig.

Riyanu tilts the scanner toward Lahani, its display casting pale lines across her gloves. Behind them, the seam keeps its hot, strained glow, but the clamp now holds the load instead of fighting it.

Riyanu

Riyanu

See that branch here? The internal spine is still intact. If we can get through the hidden latch cleanly, we can route around the worst of the stress.

Nahuli

Nahuli

Good. Then we are not patching a wound, we are opening a service path.

Nahuli flexes her empty hands and glances from the clamp to Lahani, breathing easier now that the hardware has stopped shivering.

Riyanu

Riyanu

The scanner also says the rig is holding, for the moment. Not safe, just holding. We still need to decide whether to follow the path or brace the seam.

“I brace the seam again”

Lahani plants herself against the seam and takes the load. The metal shudder fades under her brace, and the hot line stops crawling through the plating.

Riyanu

Riyanu

That is it. The stress has dropped out of the frame.

Above them, the rig gives one long, tired creak, then settles. The hidden latch stays open, and the seam holds its shape instead of tearing wider.

Nahuli

Nahuli

Good. The path is clear now, but only while it holds.

Lahani

Lahani

The seam is steady.

The clamp remains seated, the glow thins to a dull heat, and the maintenance spine beyond the plating is ready to use.

We have bought time. Move, or choose to reinforce from here.
