Sarah Tempest reaches the farmyard beneath a smoke-stained sky. A farmhouse burns behind the split-rail fence, its orange glow throwing little warmth across the churned earth.
At the center stands a gaunt middle-aged man with wind-tangled gray hair, a patched brown robe, and a crooked ash wand clenched in both hands. Blue sparks crawl over his knuckles.

Orlan Vey
Keep back! The circle is failing, and those beasts are clever enough to count my breaths.
A ring of embers shudders around him, flaring whenever a gray wolf tests its edge. Beyond it, the pack spreads through the weeds, silent except for low growls.
Near the wizard's boots, a parchment writ lies pinned beneath a black-handled knife. The seal bears a crude likeness of his face and a promised bounty.

Orlan Vey
You there, cloaked one! If you have a spell, a blade, or even steady hands, now is the hour to prove it.
His barrier gutters. One ember dies, and three wolves advance together, their eyes fixed first on the wizard, then on Sarah.
✓ Quest Accepted
Help the hedge wizard escape the wolf-pack's encirclement
“I shoot a bolt of lightning towards a wolf and it passes from one wolf to the next trying to hit every one of them”
SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled +2)

Sarah raises her hand, and stormlight gathers around her fingers. A white-blue bolt tears across the farmyard toward the lead wolf.
The lightning strikes its shoulder in a blinding flash, then leaps from fur to fur, branching through the clustered pack with a thunderclap.
Each wolf is caught in turn. The chain races across the weeds, illuminating snapping jaws and startled eyes before the pack collapses in stunned silence.

Orlan Vey
By every star above, that was no hedge trick.
The surviving embers of the circle steady as the wolves lie scattered beyond it, smoke curling faintly from the scorched earth.

Orlan Vey
You bought us breathing room, cloaked one. Help me hold it, before the fire claims what remains of my home.
“I cast a storm spell making rain fall over the burning house to put out the fire”
SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled -2)

Sarah lifts her hand toward the burning farmhouse. Clouds coil overhead, dark and swollen, as thunder rolls across the smoke-stained sky.
Rain breaks in a sudden silver sheet, hammering the roof and walls. Steam billows from the flames as water races through the doorway and over the blackened beams.
The fire gutters beneath the downpour, collapsing into hissing embers until only wet smoke rises from the farmhouse. The yard turns to mud around Sarah's boots.
The spell's strain snaps a sharp pain through Sarah's casting arm, and a thin line of blood slips from one nostril before the storm begins to ease.

Orlan Vey
The house still stands. Burned, soaked, but standing. You command the heavens like a crowned storm.
The hedge wizard lowers his crooked ash wand. With the fire gone, the steady rain reveals the bounty writ beneath the black-handled knife, its ink running at the edges.

Orlan Vey
Come inside the circle, cloaked one. We can breathe now, and I owe you the truth behind that paper.
““Yes I couldn’t help but notice you are a wanted man””
SUCCESS (Great Persuasion, rolled +0)

Sarah Tempest
Yes. I could not help but notice you are a wanted man. What is the truth behind that paper?
Sarah steps beneath the wavering ember circle, rainwater dripping from her light purple cloak. Her casting arm still aches, and blood stains the edge of her sleeve.

Orlan Vey
A fair question, storm-caller. The writ names me Orlan Vey, thief, arsonist, and murderer. Only one of those charges has any truth in it.
He nudges the soaked parchment free with his ash wand. The ruined seal peels away, revealing a second mark beneath it, stamped in dark red wax.

Orlan Vey
I stole a ledger from Magistrate Pell's men. It recorded villages marked for burning, including this one. They set the farmhouse alight to erase their evidence, then blamed me.

Orlan Vey
The murder charge is theirs too. A constable died when he tried to stop the torchmen, and Pell needed a convenient name. Mine was already feared.
Thunder mutters beyond the fields. Orlan folds the softened writ and offers it across the circle, while his wary gaze remains fixed on Sarah's bloodied sleeve.

Expose Magistrate Pell's crimes
““Well I believe I helped you with those wolves so I will help you with this Pell person””
SUCCESS (Great Persuasion, rolled +1)

Sarah Tempest
I believe I helped you with those wolves, so I will help you deal with Magistrate Pell.

Orlan Vey
Then you have my gratitude, storm-caller. Pell will not wait for us to gather courage, but neither will he expect the ledger to survive.
Orlan places the softened writ in Sarah's hand, then draws the ledger from beneath his patched robe. Its leather cover is blistered, but the pages within remain dry.

Orlan Vey
The names and orders are here. Pell keeps his office in the river town of Veycross, behind the old courthouse. His men guard the road and watch every gate.

Orlan Vey
At last, someone with power enough to make him listen.
Rain dwindles to a fine mist. Beyond the ruined farmhouse, the muddy road bends east toward distant hills, while smoke fades from the soaked fields.

Orlan Vey
We can leave before dawn. I know a farmer's path around the gate, and with your stormcraft, Pell's watchers may never know we came.

“Shouldn’t I have finished the escape form the wolves quest because I finished it already”
YES, AND MORE (VeryLikely, rolled 10)
The ledger's dry pages stir beneath Sarah's grasp, and a loose folio slips free. A water-smeared map unfolds across the mud, marked with a hidden route into Veycross.

Orlan Vey
That path is not on any gatewarden's chart. It leads beneath the old courthouse, straight to Pell's records chamber.
Orlan stares from the map to Sarah, his expression changing from wary calculation to open astonishment. Even the surviving wolves remain motionless beyond the ember ring.

Orlan Vey
You did more than save me from the pack. Your storm washed the false seal away and revealed the road we needed.

Sarah Tempest
The hidden route is marked clearly enough to follow.
At the map's edge, a faded symbol matches the dark red wax beneath the writ. Someone inside the courthouse has prepared this escape route, and expects Pell's fall.

Orlan Vey
Before dawn, we can enter unseen, reach the evidence, and force the magistrate to answer for every village on that ledger.
“I lead Orlan along the hidden route”
SUCCESS (Good Agility, rolled -1)

Sarah leads Orlan from the farmyard before dawn, following the faded marks through wet orchards and between low stone walls. The hidden route bends toward Veycross.

Orlan Vey
Keep to the birches. The old road watchmen search travelers, but they never think to look beneath their own hedges.
The map guides them through a collapsed root cellar and into a narrow passage under the town. Sarah's keen senses catch every drip, scrape, and distant footfall.
At a rusted grate, Orlan forces the warped bars aside. The metal shrieks through the quiet, and lanternlight immediately shifts somewhere above them.

Orlan Vey
That noise will put Pell's men on edge. Still, we are inside Veycross, and the records chamber lies beyond this stair.
They climb into a shadowed service corridor beneath the old courthouse. Sarah's sleeve catches on a jagged stone, tearing the fabric and reopening the ache in her casting arm.

Orlan Vey
The storm-caller brought me exactly where I promised. Now I must make her risk worth the cost.
