The Mounted Reeve

Smoke thins above the blackened village, revealing collapsed roofs, scattered stones, and a silence broken only by settling timber. No mercenaries remain.

A mounted reeve enters through the broken gate. He is a broad-shouldered middle-aged man with a weathered face, iron-gray beard, brown surcoat, and the lord’s sealed badge at his throat; four armed riders follow.

The reeve reins in amid the ash and raises one gloved hand. His riders spread across the lane, their horses stepping carefully around fallen beams.

The Mounted Reeve

The Mounted Reeve

You there. Stand where you are, and give an account of this village before my men search the ashes.

The riders keep their hands near their swords but do not dismount. Behind them, the ruined homes gape open to the pale morning sky.

The Mounted Reeve

The Mounted Reeve

I carry Lord Harrowmere’s seal. Answer plainly, and this need not become more difficult.

Josh

I am Josh of the village Skalitz. What must you know? You arrive too late to save my village. Now everything I have known is gone.

The words leave him steadily enough, but the reeve’s seal and the colors of a rival house turn the exchange brittle. The reeve’s men close their spacing, treating grief as possible accusation.

The Mounted Reeve

The Mounted Reeve

Mind your tongue. I did not burn Skalitz, and I will not answer for those who did. I am Edric Vale, reeve under Lord Harrowmere.

His rebuke cuts off any easy appeal to shared authority. Yet he studies Josh rather than ordering a search, and his gaze shifts toward the village well, where a blackened ledger box lies half-buried.

The Mounted Reeve

The Mounted Reeve

Give me what you witnessed, not what sorrow tells you. If your name is in the parish roll, that box may prove you belong here and may tell us who passed through.

One rider dismounts and points to the box, while the others keep watch over the ash-choked lane. The reeve does not permit Josh to approach yet, but the evidence is plainly within reach.

“"Our lord might as well have ordered the sacking, but regardless it is done. Here is what happened, I heard they were mercenaries and unpaid by our lord they were hired for our lord's border skirmish with the county to the east of our county."”

Josh

Our lord might as well have ordered the sacking, but regardless, it is done. I heard they were mercenaries, hired for Lord Harrowmere’s border skirmish with the county east of ours, and left unpaid.

The accusation steadies in Josh’s mouth, but the reeve’s rival-house colors make his words sound less like testimony than a charge. Edric’s riders tighten their watch.

The Mounted Reeve

The Mounted Reeve

You heard this from whom? Name the man, or call it rumor. I will not put a village’s ruin on hearsay because you resent my lord’s house.

The dismounted rider kneels beside the ledger box. Ash has swollen its lid, and the iron clasp refuses his first pull. The other riders keep Josh covered with watchful silence.

The Mounted Reeve

The Mounted Reeve

Search the box. If it holds a parish roll, we learn whether he belongs here. If it holds nothing, his account remains only an accusation.

The rider works the clasp with his dagger’s pommel until the warped lid cracks open. Damp pages cling together inside, their ink blurred into dark bars and fragments.

The Mounted Reeve

The Mounted Reeve

Stand aside from the box, Josh. You may know what happened, but you have not given me proof of who ordered it or why.

“Josh stands aside waiting for him to finish reading the roll”

SUCCESS (Fair Willpower, rolled +2)

Josh steps back from the ledger box and keeps his hands visible. The reeve’s rival-house colors remain a hard reminder of the lord he suspects, but he holds his ground and waits.

The four riders maintain their watch while the dismounted man separates the damp pages. Edric bends over the box, turning each surviving leaf toward the pale light.

The Mounted Reeve

The Mounted Reeve

Stand there, then. Patience will serve you better than another accusation.

Josh remains aside as ordered. Ash drifts across his boots, and the silence stretches while Edric studies smeared columns of births, deaths, and household names.

The Mounted Reeve

The Mounted Reeve

Here. Joshua of Skalitz, son of Martin. The roll places you among this village’s households.

Edric closes the ledger halfway, shielding the fragile pages from the wind. His expression stays guarded, but the accusation has yielded to a fact he can record.

The Mounted Reeve

The Mounted Reeve

You belong here, Josh. Now tell me only what you saw, and leave the rest to proof.

“"what else is there to know? the mercenaries came, sacked my village and took what we happened, even raped before they killed and left."”

SUCCESS (Fair Willpower, rolled +1)

Josh

Josh

What else is there to know? The mercenaries came, sacked my village, and took what we had. They violated people before killing them, then left.

The plain account costs Josh the steadiness he had forced into his voice. He falters after the last word, and the pause hangs visibly between him and the reeve.

The Mounted Reeve

The Mounted Reeve

You are saying the raiders took goods, abused villagers, murdered them, and departed without leaving survivors to question.

Edric’s gaze hardens, not with disbelief but with the weight of an account that may implicate powerful men. Behind him, the four riders remain silent in the ash.

The Mounted Reeve

The Mounted Reeve

Did you see any badge, banner, or captain among them? Names and markings are the difference between testimony and a charge against Lord Harrowmere.

His question leaves Josh’s account accepted as what he witnessed, while demanding its limits. The reeve’s men watch him closely, noticing the strain he cannot fully conceal.

The Mounted Reeve

The Mounted Reeve

I will record the sack and the killings. I will also record that you named no insignia or commander. That is all you can honestly give me today.

“"There were insignia but I wouldn't have known even if I got a clear view of their mercenary flag. How many mercenary bands did you hire not to know which band deserted and sacked a village."”

SUCCESS (Fair Willpower, rolled +2)

Josh

Josh

There were insignia, but I would not have known the band even with a clear view of its flag. How many mercenary bands did you hire, not to know which one deserted and sacked a village?

The question lands more sharply than Josh intends. His composure falters after it leaves him, and the pause exposes how much the accusation has cost him to voice before Edric and the watching riders.

The Mounted Reeve

The Mounted Reeve

Three bands were contracted along this border. I know their names, and I know which captains answered for each. Your point is fair: if my lord’s officers cannot identify deserters, then our records are worth less than the seal I carry.

One of the reeve’s men shifts in the saddle, but Edric raises a hand before protest can form. The admission settles heavily among the ash, more damaging to Harrowmere’s administration than to Josh’s testimony.

The Mounted Reeve

The Mounted Reeve

I will add this to the record: the survivors, if any are found, may identify the band by its insignia, while you could not. That distinction matters, and I will not erase it.

Edric looks again toward the ruined homes, his guarded authority diminished but not gone. The four riders remain silent, and the reeve begins writing the sharper version of Josh’s challenge.

“"Don't waste your time, Sire. I've accounted and checked everybody, all the people I know in this village is dead, which is all of them."”

SUCCESS (Fair Willpower, rolled +2)

Josh

Josh

Don't waste your time, Sire. I've accounted for and checked everybody. All the people I knew in this village are dead, which is all of them.

The words come quietly, but Edric's rival-house colors make them harder to offer as counsel rather than accusation. Josh keeps his voice level and meets the reeve's scrutiny.

The Mounted Reeve

The Mounted Reeve

You have searched the living places and found no one living. I accept that further questions of this village will yield nothing from you.

Edric's pen pauses over the page. He looks from Josh to the blackened homes, then writes the conclusion into his record instead of ordering another fruitless search.

The Mounted Reeve

The Mounted Reeve

My men will make one formal pass through the ruins for bodies and evidence, but I will not demand that you account for the dead again.

The four riders remain watchful, their presence still marked by Harrowmere's authority, but the immediate questioning ends. Ash settles across the ledger as Edric closes it.

“"Am I free to go now, or what?"”

Josh

Am I free to go now, or what?

The question leaves Josh's mouth evenly, but the effort shows in a brief hesitation. Edric's rival-house colors make asking permission feel like surrender, and the reeve's men notice the pause.

The Mounted Reeve

The Mounted Reeve

Yes. You are free to leave, Josh. I have your account, and I will not keep you here for another question.

Edric steps aside from the lane and lowers his pen. The riders draw their horses inward, opening a clear passage through the broken gate without dismounting.

The Mounted Reeve

The Mounted Reeve

Go where you choose. If you later remember a captain's name or a clear badge, bring it to Harrowmere's court. Otherwise, you owe me nothing further.

The way out stands open. Behind Josh, Edric's men begin their formal pass among the ruins, while the reeve watches him depart with a record that cannot restore Skalitz.

undefined / undefined

Josh has nearly reached the broken gate when a sharp cry rises behind him. The reeve’s men halt their formal search, and ash shifts inside a collapsed cottage.

A young woman crawls from beneath a fallen door, coughing through the soot. She is thin, ash-covered, and barefoot, with dark hair tied back beneath a torn gray shawl; one hand clutches a small iron key.

The Mounted Reeve

The Mounted Reeve

Hold! Do not crowd her. Man beside the well, bring water. The rest keep watch and give her room.

Mara Venn

Mara Venn

Mara Venn. I hid beneath the pantry floor. They left before dawn, but one man came back after the shouting stopped.

The reeve’s man beside the well snatches up a waterskin, while the other riders turn toward the ruined cottage. Edric’s attention fixes on the key in Mara’s fist and her soot-streaked face bears a small scar at one brow.

The Mounted Reeve

The Mounted Reeve

Mara, drink slowly. Then tell me where that key leads, and whether the man who returned wore the same badge as the raiders.
