Rhea arrives beneath pulsing alarm lights, her towering silhouette passing through barricaded school hallways. Exhausted survivors sort bandages, bottled water, and medicine across overturned desks while distant impacts shudder through the gates.

Near the old administration office, a middle-aged man with a weathered face, close-cropped gray hair, and a rumpled airline uniform stands over a radio map. His trembling hand marks the eastern road.

A nurse carrying gauze pauses beside the map, listening as another alarm pulses. Behind her, a steel laboratory door remains chained, its narrow window dark.

A heavy blow dents the main gate. Several survivors flinch; others drag cabinets toward the entrance as gray hands scrape and thump beyond the reinforced doors.

Rhea’s nano armor floods from its dormant state, sealing over her black gear in layered plates. The Modular Plasma Blaster unfolds and locks into rifle form in her hands.

She crosses the hallway beneath strobing red lights and takes position behind a concrete support beside the main gate, giving the survivors a clear working lane behind her.

The gate shudders again. Rhea’s rifle sights settle across the narrow approach as the first undead force their shoulders against the damaged barricade.

The information is an immediate advantage: from cover, Rhea can defend the entrance while keeping the control corridor within sight. Behind her, cabinets scrape into place.

The damaged gate buckles inward as undead bodies crowd the approach. Rhea plants her greaves, raises the plasma rifle, and fires controlled bursts through the narrowing gaps.

Each shot drops a figure before it reaches the barricade. The rifle’s heat warning flashes; one cooling cell drains completely, leaving fewer charges for the corridor.

The last pressure against the gate falters. Survivors slam fresh cabinets into place, while Rhea turns toward the maintenance corridor and advances beneath the pulsing alarms.

At the corridor controls, she finds a dusty steel panel beside the service passage. Its indicator lights reveal gate status, manual override, and the eastern exit relay.

Rhea reaches the chained laboratory door, switches the Modular Plasma Blaster into pistol form, and slips the compact weapon into her armored grip before working the lock.

The chain releases with a sharp metallic crack that echoes through the maintenance corridor. Inside, cold cabinets hum beneath emergency lights, their labeled culture vials still intact.

Rhea crosses the laboratory and secures the culture containers inside a padded transport case. The case seals against her armor, protecting its contents from the jolting passage back.

A distant scrape answers from beyond the service passage. Rhea steps out of the laboratory with the secured cultures, pistol ready, and the alarm still pulsing overhead.

Rhea switches the Modular Plasma Blaster into suppressed pistol form. Its discharge becomes a muted pulse as she moves into the eastern wing, culture case sealed against her armor.

She clears the first classrooms methodically, dropping the shambling dead before they can cross their thresholds. The alarm masks each faint report beneath its steady electronic pulse.

A side office contains no living survivors, but its wall map reveals a maintenance loop behind the eastern classrooms, linking directly to the service exit.

Rhea advances through the loop, checking each doorway and securing it behind her. The pistol’s quiet shots preserve the shelter’s ammunition stores and conceal her exact location.

At the far junction, she finds the eastern exit relay intact and switches it to manual standby. A green indicator confirms the route can be opened from the shelter side.
