The Trap of the Glowing Chest

The central chamber opens wide and low, all black stone and old gold, lit by a sickly pulse from the pedestal ahead. On it rests an ornate chest, each glow from its seams thudding like a slow heart.

Esoterika Greywood steps in, and the floor answers. The stone softens beneath their boots into a tacky resin that clings at once, greedy as tar.

From the corners, the shadows peel free. Tall shapes unfold with too many reaching limbs, dragging themselves toward the light and the little thief at its center.

The chest is pulling.

Esoterika digs in, but the room tugs back, drawing them a handspan closer to the pedestal with every breath.

The Hooded Figure

The Hooded Figure

Don’t touch it. If you can hear me, keep your hands off the chest.

A hooded figure drops from the upper ledge to the far side of the pedestal, one hand raised against the dark. Their stance is half-warning, half-plea, while the shadow-things keep closing in.

The Hooded Figure

The Hooded Figure

Help me break its hold, or we both get dragged in.

Claim the chest

I jump to the chest and try to open it

SUCCESS (Legendary Thievery, rolled -2)

The Trap of the Glowing Chest

Esoterika springs, resin snapping at their boots, and lands atop the pedestal with a sharp scrape of stone. Their picks flash once at the chest seam, then the lid gives under their hand.

The glow inside gutters and spills across their fingers. The chest opens, and the pull in the chamber breaks with an audible shudder.

A sting bites into Esoterika's palm from the rim, a thin cut from hidden teeth in the metal. A bead of blood marks the lid as it swings wider.

The Hooded Figure

The Hooded Figure

Too late for clean hands now. What does it show you?

The shadow shapes recoil from the chest's flare, their reaching arms pulling back into the dark corners.

Esoterika Greywood

Esoterika Greywood

The chest is open.

Inside, something gleams back at Esoterika through the sick light, while the hooded figure waits across the pedestal for a choice.

I see a simple brown leather dog collar in the chest, but something about it feels off

SUCCESS (Good Perception, rolled +1)

The Trap of the Glowing Chest

Esoterika leans in over the open lid and lets their gaze settle on the prize. The chamber’s glow catches a plain brown leather collar, simple at first glance, but wrong in the way it sits among the treasures, too neat, too still.

Esoterika Greywood

Esoterika Greywood

A collar. Old leather. The fit looks narrow.

The stitching draws their eye next. It is not decorative, but deliberate, laced with tiny marks that break the surface in a pattern like a hidden script.

The Hooded Figure

The Hooded Figure

That is the binding piece. Do not trust the shape it wears.

The collar gives a faint pulse in the chest, as if something inside it answers the light. The shadow shapes stay back, but the air around the pedestal tightens.

Esoterika’s hand hovers over the rim, and the collar’s buckle turns just enough to reveal a dark inner stain, old as dried sap and far too deliberate to be dirt.

The Hooded Figure

The Hooded Figure

If you take it, take it carefully. If you leave it, it may choose another hand.

I take it

SUCCESS (Superb Agility, rolled +1)

The Trap of the Glowing Chest

Esoterika snatches the collar free in one smooth motion. The glow washes over their paws, then gutters at the empty chest as the leather piece clears the rim.

For one breath, the chamber holds still. The runes along the stitching flare bright, and the collar gives a hard, living pulse against Esoterika’s grip.

The hooded figure stiffens across the pedestal, their warning hand lowering by a fraction. Their attention locks on the thing now in Esoterika’s possession.

The Hooded Figure

The Hooded Figure

Careful. It has chosen you now, whether you meant to or not.

The air around the pedestal loosens, but the collar stays warm, as if it is waiting for a neck to remember it.

Esoterika Greywood

It is heavier than it looks.

Runic leather collar

I go to leave the room so I can continue searching through the dungeon

SUCCESS (Superb Agility, rolled +2)

The Trap of the Glowing Chest

Esoterika tucks the collar in close and slips away from the pedestal, padding toward the chamber exit with quick, light steps.

The hooded figure watches them go, then shifts aside without blocking the path, their posture still tense as the glow fades behind Esoterika.

At the doorway, the collar gives one last pulse against Esoterika's grip, warm and insistent.

The Hooded Figure

The Hooded Figure

Take it with you, then. But if it wakes again, do not let it choose for you.

Esoterika Greywood

Esoterika Greywood

I am leaving the room.

Esoterika slips through the threshold and out into the dungeon passage, the chamber receding behind them.

The Hooded Figure

The Hooded Figure

If you find a way to sever its claim, I want to hear of it.

The second I leave the room, the collar "wakes up" and snaps around my neck

FAILURE (Poor Willpower, rolled +0)

The Trap of the Glowing Chest

The corridor takes one breath of quiet, then the collar jolts in Esoterika's grip.

It whips free, snaps cold around their throat, and cinches tight before their hands can catch it.

Esoterika Greywood

Esoterika Greywood

The clasp is on the back.

The glow under the runes surges once, bright enough to stain the stone walls gold.

The Hooded Figure

The Hooded Figure

Easy. Do not fight it blind.

From inside the collar, the light settles into a steady pulse, as if it has found its place.

The Hooded Figure

The Hooded Figure

Now decide, Esoterika Greywood. Do you pry for the clasp, or listen for what it wants?

I don't feel anything wrong at the moment, so I keep walking

SUCCESS (Good Health, rolled +2)

The Trap of the Glowing Chest

Esoterika keeps walking, small steps steady on the rune-lit stone. The collar’s pulse stays even, and the passage ahead remains clear.

The Hooded Figure falls in beside the doorway, watching the glow at Esoterika’s throat instead of reaching for it.

The Hooded Figure

The Hooded Figure

Good. It is holding, for now.

Esoterika Greywood

Esoterika Greywood

The clasp is still behind my neck.

A few paces on, the collar’s light tugs at the edges of the passage, turning the dust to gold.

The Hooded Figure

The Hooded Figure

Do not mistake calm for freedom, Esoterika Greywood. It is listening.

The chest is behind them now, the corridor ahead open, but the same warm pressure clings to the neck like a hand waiting for a signal.

I continue down the corridor, leaving the hooded figure behind

SUCCESS (Superb Agility, rolled +1)

The Trap of the Glowing Chest
The Trap of the Glowing Chest

Esoterika pads farther down the corridor, and this time the hooded figure does not match their pace. The glow at their throat pulls ahead with them, a steady coin-bright pulse on the stone.

Behind them, the hooded figure slows at the doorway and lets the distance open. Their attention stays fixed on the collar, not the raccoonfolk.

The Hooded Figure

The Hooded Figure

Then it lets you go at a distance. That is not the same as letting you go.

Esoterika Greywood

Esoterika Greywood

The passage is mine for now.

The words fade into the draft. Esoterika keeps moving, and the corridor bends ahead, swallowing the chamber behind them.

The Hooded Figure

The Hooded Figure

If it tightens, stop. If it speaks, answer carefully.

The hooded figure remains back by the doorway, a dark shape in the gold spill, while Esoterika claims a few precious strides of empty passage.

I arrive alone in another room
