The Courier

Rain hisses through a narrow alley of neon and rust. Gary steps out of the shadows, cutting off the only clear route.

A courier freezes mid-stride, wrist-comm flashing frantic code. In his other arm, a heavy unmarked medical case hums with expensive cyberware.

The Courier

The Courier

Back off, choom. I got nothing for you.

He spots Gary, pales, then snaps into motion, trying to sprint for the alley mouth.

The courier skids into a locked security gate instead. Sparks blink over the panel as he slams his wrist-comm against the override reader.

The Courier

The Courier

Come on, come on... not now.

The case shifts in his grip, its vibration steady and dangerous, like something inside is still very much alive.

The Courier

The Courier

If you want the package, you’re gonna have to take it fast.

Grab the nearest object and I throw it at him

The Courier
The Courier

Gary snatches the nearest loose thing from the alley floor and hurls it in one clean motion.

The object smacks the courier high in the chest. He jerks backward, the case slips free, and his arms windmill uselessly in the rain.

The Courier

The Courier

Ah, damn, no, no, no!

The unmarked case hits the wet concrete with a heavy thud, skidding to a stop between them.

The Courier

The Courier

He lunges for it, but the gate at his back keeps him boxed in.

Rain beads on the casing as its low hum carries louder in the alley, bright and waiting.

The Courier

The Courier

Move, or I swear I dump the whole lot right here!

I shove the courier away from the case and I pin him down

Gary slams into the courier and drives him off the case. Rain sprays off the concrete as the man hits the wall and folds under Gary’s weight.

The Courier

The Courier

Get off, get off me!

Gary pins him there, one arm across his chest, the other braced on the wet ground. The courier’s hands scrabble empty air, too far from the case now.

The Courier

The Courier

It is not yours, you hear me? That case is not yours!

The unmarked case sits between them, untouched, humming on the slick pavement. The gate looms shut at the end of the alley, sealing the courier in place.

Gary

Gary

The case is within reach.

Pinned and breathing hard, the courier twists his head toward Gary and the case, furious and helpless. His wrist-comm flashes once in the rain.

I break his arm and I slam him on the ground

Gary torques the courier’s arm, and the man folds with a wet crack of protest. He goes down hard, shoulder first, skidding across the rain-slick concrete.

The Courier

The Courier

Ah! No, wait, stop!

The courier lands flat and stunned, pinned out of the way. The humming case stays where it is, open to Gary’s reach on the pavement.

The Courier

The Courier

You do not know what that is. Leave it!

Rain drums on metal and concrete. The locked gate still blocks the alley exit, but the struggle has shifted, the hardware is no longer in the courier’s hands.

The Courier

The Courier

If you take it, you are already marked. Do you hear me?

I break his other arm and I interrogate him

SUCCESS (Legendary Strength, rolled -1)

Gary plants a knee, locks the courier’s free wrist, and drives the arm sideways until the man gasps and goes slack against the wet pavement. The case sits untouched between them, humming louder in the rain.

The Courier

The Courier

Okay, okay, I will talk. Just do not twist it any farther.

Gary keeps the pressure on. The courier swallows hard, eyes flicking from Gary’s face to the case, then back again.

The Courier

The Courier

It is not cargo. It is a leash. Someone paid to make sure it reaches a buyer who does not ask names.

The Courier

The Courier

If you take it, they will know where to look first. That is why I ran.

Rain needles the alley. The courier’s breathing stays ragged, but his panic has turned into fear with edges, like he has said too much already.

The Courier

The Courier

Listen, Gary... if you want the case, take it now. If you want to live long enough to use it, tell me who sent you after me.

Can I knock him out

YES, BUT (VeryLikely, rolled 77)

Gary shifts his weight to deliver a sharp blow, but the courier twists his head at the last second, causing the strike to glance harmlessly off the wet pavement. The courier remains conscious and alert, his eyes wide with the realization of the failed attempt.

I use my strength to break his other arm to render him useless

SUCCESS (Legendary Strength, rolled +2)

Gary wrenches the courier’s trapped arm hard against the alley floor. The joint gives with a wet crack, and the man folds with a strangled cry, useless on the concrete.

The Courier

The Courier

Ah, no, no, please...

Rain needles down between them, splashing over the humming case as Gary’s grip stays firm and the courier’s body stops fighting.

The Courier

The Courier

He is not letting go. I am done.

The courier curls in on himself, breathing fast, one arm pinned wrong beneath him while the other claws uselessly at the wet pavement.

The cyberware case sits untouched at Gary’s feet, isolated in the rain, its glow steady and mean.

The Courier

The Courier

Take it, then... but if you open that thing, they will find you.

Gary shifts his weight and plants a boot near the courier’s good leg, making the threat plain without striking. Rain ticks off the metal gate behind them.

Gary

Gary

Break the other leg if you want. Talk. Who sent you?

The Courier

The Courier

His face tightens, then caves. "People who do not use names twice. A handler with chrome fingers. He said I just had to move the case."

The courier swallows hard, staring past Gary at the glowing case like it might answer for him.

The Courier

The Courier

"They call them the Pale Line. I never met the top of it, only runners and collectors. That case is the leash, not the cargo."

His breathing steadies into a miserable, honest tremor. The rain keeps coming down, but the alley feels smaller now.

The Courier

The Courier

"If you take it, do not let the light touch your face. Please. Just grab it and go."

I put my foot on him to pin him down and I grab the case

Gary drives his boot down on the courier’s chest and the man folds flat with a wet gasp. The case comes free into Gary’s hand, slick and humming.

The Courier

The Courier

No... Don’t let it read you.

The courier claws once at Gary’s ankle, then stops, pinned and coughing against the rain-slick concrete.

The case pulses brighter for a beat, its glow painting Gary’s glove and the puddles around his feet.

The Courier

The Courier

You have it now. That means they can find the hand holding it.

Rain hisses off the metal gate behind him, and the alley falls into a tense, waiting hush.

Gary eases his weight off the courier and steps back into the rain. The man stays curled on the concrete, breathing hard, while the case’s pulse washes red-white over both of them.

Gary

Gary

Tell your boss what I did. Tell him I’m coming for him.

The Courier

The Courier

Yeah... yeah, I’ll tell him.

The courier swallows against the pain and turns his face a little away from the light in Gary’s hand.

The Courier

The Courier

He won’t like that you touched it. Nobody does. It’s not cargo, it’s a leash.

A crack of static snaps from the case, and the glow stutters across Gary’s glove. Rain drums louder on the gate behind them.

The Courier

The Courier

If you open it, you’re not just stealing from them. You’re stepping into their line of sight.

The courier lets out a shaky breath, then nods once toward the case in Gary’s hand. The alley goes still except for the rain and the hard little pulse of light.
