The Fleeing Woman

Eidenhoek reaches the river crossing as a ragged young adult woman, slight-built with wind-burned skin and a chipped silver earring, wades from the far shallows, her dark braid plastered to a soot-streaked face. Behind her, the besieged village burns beneath a circling dragon, an adult bronze dragon with swept horns, a long angular snout, and ember-bright eyes whose bronze wings catch the firelight.

Please, scholar, do not send me back. They are behind me.

She stumbles onto the near bank, clutching a small iron-bound coffer beneath her torn gray cloak. Water streams around her boots as distant shouts rise through the smoke.

Along the near bank, four armed pursuers emerge between the alder trunks, their red sashes bright against travel-stained leather. One raises a hooked spear and points across the water.

Thief! Stand aside, elf. The village relic belongs to the lord.

Above the ruined walls, the dragon banks sharply. Its immense shadow passes over the river, and a thunderous wingbeat scatters ash across the crossing.

Hide me, let me run, or let them see you. There is no fourth choice.

The coffer is the danger they came to claim.

Secure the village relic

The Fleeing Woman

Eidenhoek traces a silent sigil through the ash-laden air. Pale starlight folds around the fleeing woman, her coffer, and her dripping cloak until all three vanish from sight.

The spell takes hold completely, but its price bites at once: every spoken word Eidenhoek might utter becomes trapped behind a cold, invisible seal in their throat.

Where did she go? Search the bank! The relic cannot have vanished.

Four sets of boots splash toward the crossing. One pursuer sweeps a hooked spear through empty air, close enough to stir the hidden coffer's cloak without touching it.

Above the village, the circling bronze dragon, a male with ridged scales, heavy clawed limbs, and a forked tail circles through smoke and firelight. The dragon's shadow slides across the river, masking the faintest shimmer where the spell bends the rain.

Eidenhoek

Eidenhoek

The spell hides her, but not the water displaced by her steps.

The invisible woman reaches the alder roots. Her footsteps retreat into the reeds while the pursuers fan out, searching the wrong bank beneath the dragon's thunder.

“Follow distantly from the woman”

FAILURE (Good Agility, rolled -1)

The Relic at the Crossing

Eidenhoek keeps well behind the fading ripples, stepping from stone to stone along the reeds. The effort pulls at their bruised side, but they maintain the hidden woman's direction through the rain.

The current divides ahead, and her footprints will vanish in both channels.

At the fork, Eidenhoek chooses the quieter channel. A submerged root gives way beneath them, splashing loudly; the distant disturbances cease, and the invisible woman slips beyond their hearing.

Behind them, the pursuers' lanterns bob between the alders. A pursuer at the reeds pauses, staring toward Eidenhoek's splash, then turns after the stronger current.

The trail is lost, but a thorn bush holds a thread from the fleeing woman's gray cloak. Beyond it, the reeds bend toward a narrow path climbing to an old stone shrine.

Eidenhoek remains alone at the fork, with the shrine path offering the only clear lead and the pursuers searching the opposite bank.

Eidenhoek climbs the shrine path and enters beneath a weathered stone arch. Inside, rain taps the roofless sanctuary while the thorn-caught thread trembles with fading starlight.

At the altar, Eidenhoek finds the invisible woman crouched beside a cracked basin, one hand wrapped around the iron-bound coffer. They trace a counter-sigil through the damp air.

The pale starlight collapses inward, revealing the woman and coffer completely. The spell's hidden seal breaks with a faint chime, and the cold obstruction leaves Eidenhoek's throat.

Mara Vey

Mara Vey

My name is Mara Vey. You have my thanks, scholar, though the lord's men will not abandon this relic.

Mara rises slowly, keeping the coffer close beneath her gray cloak. Her chipped silver earring catches the shrine's dim light as water drips from her braid.

The shrine is old, but its altar remembers sanctuary roads. If you seek a way through the wilds, perhaps this relic can repay what you have done.

Beyond the broken doorway, the pursuers' lanterns flicker far below. Within the shrine, the rain softens, and the restored silence leaves Eidenhoek free to speak again.
