The blue ring widens without sound, revealing a darkness crowded with distant, pale stars. Frost crawls across Elias's porch boards despite the mild air.

Come inside, quickly. Whatever has noticed this house must not find us standing beneath it.
A thin crimson line descends from the opening and strikes the forest ridge. Far away, trees bend outward as though something immense has drawn breath.

“I hoist my axe over my shoulder as I approach the house. I follow in after Elias and jump head-first at the sight of an entity unfamiliar to me. "Just leave it to me," I boasted. I charge at the entity with a massive leap, raising my axe into the sky to swing down on the offending creature.”
